THE RUMBLE LOS ANGELES TONIGHT @ 3 CLUBS

The June edition of THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES takes place this evening at 3 Clubs in Hollywood and features 3 local bands with bright futures, a special guest DJ and free admission.

CHASING KINGS are bringing it home tonight and we can't wait to see them tear up the backroom of 3 Clubs. Sincere key-laden indie pop at its finest, CHASING KINGS excel in crafting classic melodies coupled with memorable hooks. From what we've been hearing their gathering new fans along the tour this week and must be caught before they blow up at the Also I Like to Rock summer series at The Hammer Museum next month. This quartet are now bondafide members of the FS family and we wouldn't have it any other way.

"Chasing Kings sound like a younger Kings Of Leon....really good songwriters. And they’re bloody talented." -Me And All My Friends

Filling the middle slot, we're stoked to have GAMBLE HOUSE, Grizzly Bear esque rockers that have been attracted major attention in LA, even nabbing a spot at Aquarium Drunkard's Waved Out Fest earlier this Spring. This LA based band has delivered
an album so deep and rich it feels like an old friend. Check out the gorgeous track, "Bonny Doon!"

"Full of haunting melodies, and magical surrealism, Gamble House incorporates meticulous instrumentation and complex arrangements, creating large, dynamic shifts, with intricate vocal harmonies, and a mixture of electronics, woodwinds, and acoustic and electric elements." - Beatcrave

Rounding out the bill, we have Inland Empire based trio, FRANCISCO THE MAN! Fresh off their spot at The Silverlake Jubilee and the release of their their new five-song EP, "With Friends Like You," they are a must see! We can't get enough of their newest track,"Do You Remember."

"The five-song collection’s guitar squalls and big grooves take the band’s garagey psych-folk to a bigger place, where youthful yearning blares across the landscape." - Buzz Bands LA

On the turntables is a man with some golden ears - DJ GOLDEN SUGAR BEAR. He's tipped us off on more great bands than anyone over the years and he'll be holding things down on the decks as well as broadcasting live on his pirate radio station. Stay tuned for a tweet on what frequency you can pick it up on sometime before the show starts.

The Rumble: Los Angeles is brought to you by a collective that believes in helping young bands become bands that can sustain themselves and start a career and consists of Future Sounds, BMI, Buzzbands.LA and The Planetary Group. The Rumble is FREE.

THE RUMBLE ROLLS INTO LOS ANGELES TONIGHT @ 3 CLUBS

TONIGHT @ 3 Clubs in Hollywood it's the May version of THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES with three more acts performing that should be on your radar.

Headlining the show will be the LA based act - MISSISSIPPI MAN - we recently got turned onto them and their song "Hell's Oven" has us hooked. Check them out and download this song - "Ricochet" (thanks Rollo & Grady)

Here's what our partners had to say about them..

"American infused... earnest folk-pop" - Buzzbands LA

"The band's live sound references the past while simultaneously looking to the future" - SPIN Earth

Playing all of the RUMBLE parties along the West Coast this week (6 shows in 7 nights) is San Francisco's THE FEROCIOUS FEW, as they have released "Juices", their Birdman Records debut, and a culmination of their songwriting craft that they have worked on religiously on every street corner in San Francisco and Oakland. Known for their guerrilla sidewalk shows outside concerts and street fairs, that generally end in near arrests, the FF are a blues explosion that's part Black Keys, part Robert Johnson at the Crossroads.

Opening up the evening someone we've also started stalking recently - LA's DIRT DRESS. Thursday's party is going to be a whiskey-infused mess after these three acts drop their delta blues meets 2010 rock n roll on all of us. Dirt Dress caught our attention after we received their EP on cassette, Perdido en la Suciedad (Papermade), and we love their Velvet Underground meets The Modern Lovers vibe. Here's a look at DD and what's to come tonight...

The party is always FREE and we'll have 5$ Svedka vodka drinks all night long.

The Rumble: Los Angeles is brought to you by Future Sounds, BMI, RM64, Buzzbands.LA, The Planetary Group and Spin Earth.

3 Clubs is located on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd and Vine - look for the 'Cocktails' sign

JACK LADDER IS A LEGEND

Last night I saw a rock star. Remember them? We used to have them. We still do, they are mostly just old rock stars now.

His name is Tim Rogers, aka JACK LADDER

His performance well after midnight last evening at THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES was in short, epic.

It felt like I had been transported back in time to the mid-'80's and was catching one of my 'time-machine wishes' bands perform early shows in a little club. It didn't feel 2010, but in that I don't mean that it doesn't sound contemporary > it's more about how it didn't feel like what everyone else seems to be doing these days (long, meandering songs, lo-fi, purposely being so deep and obscure, indie folk, electro indie, white belts, dogs chasing the tail). This set of music was more about a band that clearly has a vision and dare I say, personality? And long in personality are the members of Jack Ladder. Frontman/hobgobblin Tim Rogers stands on the tall side of 6"5", maybe even 6'7" and is one tall drink of water. Donny Benet on bass looked like he slipped away on his rumspringa from the Amish farm he was raised on and learned the bass by studying old Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds records. And then there is Kirin J Callinan (see below). On their myspace page he is listed as "guitar, blood", and I'm still trying to process what this guy is all about, and I mean that in the best possible way. Anyone that can rock the pants, or shall I say - green velvet knickers and not miss a beat is someone I can idolize. What Kirin was doing with his TABLE of pedals and even more importantly, with the chords and his dance moves, was stunning. Everything about the set was dangerous, inventive, and really just wild, like a scene out of 'Wild At Heart' and Jack/Tim was Nicholas Cage.

Kirin J Callinan - playing "blood"

The crew I was standing next to all felt we had just witnessed one of those special performances that you'll someday fondly look back on and be grateful you were present.

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES TONIGHT @ 3 CLUBS

Tonight @ 3 Clubs in Hollywood it's another edition of THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES.

This month we have some incredible bands that should already be on your radar.

Headlining from Australia, it's the 6'5" JACK LADDER (aka Tim Rogers) still in country post-SXSW and ready to bring his NICK CAVE fronting SUICIDE sounds to us in the perfect vamp-setting that is the back room of 3 Clubs. Jack Ladder and company have already received a ton of acclaim down south, winning the 2008 AMP Red Bull Prize for Best Album for Love is Gone (Spunk) and opening for Aussie super group Wolfmother.

LA's own PEPPER RABBIT have been playing all of The Rumble West Coast dates and we couldn't be more excited to have this three piece from Silver Lake. Even this morning we've been getting emails from San Francisco Rumblers that caught them last night raving on their performance.

Opening up from Fullerton, CA, it's REGRETS & BRUNETTES, someone we've had our eye on for some time and then Kevin at Buzzbands.la reached out and snagged them for the party.

The party is FREE - 3 Clubs is located on the corner of Vine and Santa Monica Blvd.

CAUGHT LIVE- THE RUMBLE LA: MARCH

Thanks to everyone who came out to 3 Clubs Thursday night for The Rumble LA. San Diego's BEATERS treated those early-comers to a solid set blending snotty, swirling bedroom punk with tribal-like cacophony and a room-filling wall-of-sound crutch that was almost impossible to ignore. No wonder standouts "Fishage" and "White Hate" have already become FS staples.

TWIN TIGERS showed the packed back room a little something about this whole shoegaze-laced-guitar thing that the the blogosphere seems to be paddling through for air these days. Just expecting great things from this outfit is one thing, but seeing their sound grow to fill venue walls in the future seems like a near certainty for this Athens, GA about-to-break foursome.

Night-closers RUMSPRINGA near-lived up to their tag as "LA's best-kept secret" with a guitar/drum take on blues-soaked, riffed-out rock tunes that oddly-enough got most of the first few rows flailing like a Prince set (no doubt thanks to 808 bleeps from a sometimes third member) while the rest of the room (myself included) wondered just how they haven't ever seen the band before.

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES IS TONIGHT @ 3 CLUBS

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES @ 3 Clubs happens TONIGHT and we all had good fortune smile upon us when RUMSPRINGA stepped forward to headline our party as they prep for SXSW. We've been fans for some time and finally got our opportunity to bring them into that 3 Clubs backroom where they will take it apart.

That leads us to TWIN TIGERS from Athens, Georgia, a band that will be playing through the circuit that started last night in SF, into LA, San Diego, and will be playing THE RUMBLE: LAS VEGAS that will be a part of the NEON REVERB MUSIC FESTIVAL on the 12th. They will keep the wheels turning to Austin and will be playing THE RUMBLE @ SXSW at Shangra La. Their debut record - 'Gray Waves' on Old Flame Records dropped Tuesday and the album is a flamethrower. Here's what AQUARIUM DRUNKARD has to say about it: "A four piece, the bands live show kills, reminiscent of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Psychocandy era JAMC."

Opening up LA, but headlining THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO is a band that we're freaked out about - BEATERS. This band heads out on tour as direct support to THE SOFT PACK post-SXSW, and we get to double-dip with them in both cities, in our effort to show swap San Diego and Los Angeles bands together. They had us from the first 30 seconds of "Fishage".

Our lovely resident DJ's, S.i.S. are always present, and always bring their smiles and great selections.

The party is FREE.

3 Clubs is located on the corner of Vine and Santa Monica Blvd.

TONIGHT - THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES @ 3 CLUBS

It's here - THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES burns tonight at 3 Clubs with 3 bands we love on a silver platter for FREE. AUSHUA, CHASING KINGS & CAT PARTY with DJ's S.i.S. will handle all the entertaining. Watch the National Championship game at the bar before the party kicks off with John and the Longhorn fans.

For once, don't be sooooo LA tonight and get there early for a change and catch a band whose 7"'s and EP's have owned me, and look for their track, "Tar & Feathers" to appear on Future Sound 34 (due out hopefully by the end of January) - CAT PARTY.

"Once upon a summer we were desperate to be younger still..."

The lyrics pulled straight from the title track of the CHASING KINGS EP, "The Current State Of Our Future", these youngsters have old souls. See the interview below for more on these guys.

Headlining the party is the band from Santa Ana known as AUSHUA, who are showing off their latest EP, "Limbo" at shows all over Southern California recently, and tonight we get the treat. We meant to do a nice interview with them and hear more about this new output of tracks but time kept on slipping, slipping, slipping...into the future....

The party is FREE and brought to you by Future Sounds, RM64, BMI, Buzzbands.LA, Stranded In Stereo, WOXY, The Owl Mag and Spin Earth.

KEEPING UP WITH THE CHASING KINGS - RUMBLE LA PREVIEW

This afternoon we had the chance to sit down with one of the bands featured on tomorrow night's RUMBLE: LA bill at 3 Clubs - CHASING KINGS - and have a talk with them to find out more about this young act whose EP, 'The Current State of Our Future", has become a favorite on the FS radio show and around the HQ.

Chasing Kings are an LA based band that originally started back in Lake Arrowhead as kids and grew into the four piece that it currently is. We were immediately struck by the lack of pretension and downright sincerity of this young band, whose members have just hit the legal drinking age (wink wink). We tried our best to get them to dish the dirt on scenes or other bands or even boast of ambitions, but what we got were four guys that love '60's music and music history for that matter, a few with jazz backgrounds, that were humble yet driven but with realistic expectations on what has become the "music business" and their definitions of success. Refreshing in our current climate of band entitlement at times because of "overnight buzz bands" happening after the blog bandwagon revs it's engine and taps someone the next Deerhunter/Animal Collective/U Name it.

The band is made up of Draw Beck, Mic Gold, Knick Sandler and Matte Schwartz and they initially got together around a shared love for The Who, and the record, "Tommy" in particular. They raided their parent's record collections and discovered that people once wrote songs that had hooks and that 30 and 4o years later, people could remember the lyrics and the basslines and purchase them over and over again, every time the medium changed. I sometimes wonder if we will look back in 20 years and collectively sing lyrics by WAAVES. Just saying.

Cruise over to the band's Myspace page HERE, and listen to "This Town". You'll hear some big swirling vocals that do not lack ambition, they are full throttled blasts of a band that believes in their craft. They just returned from their first nationwide tour, self-booked, that had them playing places like Boston, universities around New York City, and a secret house party in Montreal. What we're hoping to get a taste of tomorrow night when they hit the stage around 10:15pm is the chops they've developed from playing night after night to those indifferent and those that meet them at the merch table later to pick up their self-released EP.

They are writing new material for a full length, that early on was set for unveiling by SXSW (the band is heading to Austin in March) but now is going to be patiently developed on the schedule that is reality. They look to bands like GRIZZLY BEAR as a role model "in just the fact that they went from making records that they do all themselves into touring constantly and continuing to do it all themselves". Sustainability is their goal, and success is touring with acts they admire and building their footprint.

No Future Sounds interview is complete without us asking the up-in-coming bands we love to tell us about bands that they love that we may not know of yet, and the foursome all agreed that the one we should all put on our radar is CHERRY CHAPSTICK. The main guy in Cherry Chapstick played guitar with them in Boston, but is from Montreal, and they are an electronic indie band with 2 EP's released. Check out this picture of them above, it's already interesting (check out your boy to the left).

Others bands that they mentioned that they would recommend are Portland's MIMICKING BIRDS or two bands from CALARTS out in Valencia: MAGIC MOUNTAIN and WHITE HORSES IN TECHNOCOLOR EVERYWHERE. The final act that they met out on the east coast but that have recently moved to Los Angeles is VERB THE ADJECTIVE NOUN.

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES goes down tomorrow night at 3 Clubs. It's Free.

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES THIS THURSDAY @ 3 CLUBS

Happy New Year!

If you are like us, you've had your fill of down time, Mom's pies, bad television, and it's time to shake off the holidays and get back on the street and see some live music. This Thursday, THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES returns to 3 Clubs with a line up that will force you back into the game.

AUSHUA, a local band we fell for back when we had "Sister Saves" grace Future Sounds 30 back in October '07. They've only gotten stronger and are out showing off their new material.

CHASING KINGS - A trusted source first turned us onto their new material, and songs like "This Town" have earned a regular spot on the weekly Future Sounds playlist on WOXY. Can't wait to see this band live.

CAT PARTY- We basically started stalking this band soon after hearing early demos and 7" vinyl only releases, then just got their EP. Look for them to appear on upcoming Future Sounds releases, be sure to get to the show early so you don't miss this potential break out act of 2010.

The lovely ladies that are DJ S.i.S. spin everything without pretension as our resident DJ's.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES - THE RUMBLE: LA @ 3 CLUBS

In the highly competitive season of Holiday shows, benefits and parties, tonight in LA delivers plenty of options. Options are nice, but THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES is mandatory. You must come to this show, please.

What's on tap this month is a four band line up, and a true battle of LA vs. SD. The upstart San Diego, as you know and as we've reported previously, is coming strong these days with quality band after band. Tonight they are represented in a 'The Warriors' style battle royale by TAPE DECK MOUNTAIN, the heralded buzzing act that Pitchfork loves, and the Arcade Fire-like power of THE DROWNING MEN. Los Angeles steps forward with the Pretenders-meets-Belly rock and roll of ALL WRONG & THE PLANS CHANGE and first up will be the uber-creative, EVAN VOYTAS. The ladies that call themselves DJ S.i.S. will be there making all the boys stare at them on the turntables.

Joining The Rumble: Los Angeles family of partners is BUZZBANDS.LA. We've read Kevin's column for years at the Times, now as the full-fledged BB.LA blog, he's out every night reporting back on what we should've have gone out to see. Welcome brother.

The Rumble: Los Angeles is FREE and it's at 3 Clubs in Hollywood - on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd and Vine. Don't spend too much time in the Army surplus store, get in early for EV.

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES TONIGHT @ 3 CLUBS

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES on Thursday at 3 Clubs is going to be outrageous!

It's the homecoming of FITZ & THE TANTRUMS, fresh off his tour where he played Red Rocks and The Greek Theatre and heads into KRCW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Fitz & Co are doing ALL of the Rumble West Coast parties in October.

We found the perfect bands to accompany Fitz for this month's Rumble - from San Diego it's the dynamo that is LADY DOTTIE & THE DIAMONDS. Dotty is like SHARON JONES on speed, and delivers music with The Diamonds that storms like monsoon season.

From Seattle is THE BLAKES! That's right, they are on the bill with a brand new record that sounds like the NUGGETS box set squeezed out a baby and out popped 'Souvenir'. We've already watched them destroy the Rumble: Seattle and the Rumble: Portland, now they take on LA and San Diego as this trio does a round show together this week.

Those lovely ladies, DJ S.i.S. return as our resident DJ's and the party is FREE!

PHOTOS FROM LAST NIGHT'S DANCE PARTY RUMBLE LOS ANGELES

Thanks to everyone that came out to THE RUMBLE: LA last night at 3 Clubs. It had to go down as one of the most over-to-top-big-energy nights we've ever had. All the bands threw down the rock hammer and delivered sets that made it impossible to stand still to. Here are a couple of pictures of last night's party...

The perfect photo of Court Alexander from PRAYER, converting the masses with a Southern Baptist minister like performance, complete with the debut of two new songs, "Bobby" and "Adrianalima". One day those that were present will remember when they saw this band in the tiny 3 Clubs backroom - built for a much larger stage. Can you say 'superstar'?

The tidal wave of fun decimated Santa Monica and Vine Avenue last night when the 7-headed beast of U.S.E made every single solitary person present move, as they overwhelm you with love, vocoder and feisty front ladies. They've performed their magic on every night of the Rumble Tour this week, making BFF's in every port. U.S.E are an inspiration- I love you.

A HUGE congratulations go out to THE DANCE PARTY who only moments before they played the Rumble, signed to the newest Atlantic Records imprint, HELLYA! Records. These D.C. born, now LA four-piece came out of the gates swinging.

Thanks to Ryan Suffern for these great photos.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: THE RUMBLE: LA @ 3 CLUBS IS A DANCE PARTY

LA is not known as a town where the cool kids dance, but tonight we're lifting the 'cool' ban and allowing people to groove without ridicule at THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES @ 3 Clubs in Hollywood. Very appropriately named, the opening act are called THE DANCE PARTY from Washington D.C. and they'll set the stage for an entire evening of movement.

Then, in what could be a true test of the limits of the band room in 3 Clubs, the 7 piece UNITED STATE OF ELECTRONICA will dissolve the distance between performers and audience and deliver song after song from their newly released album, 'L O V E W O R L D'. Here's a taste...

U.S.E are nothing short of a spectacle, an awesome force to experience. You'll stand a crossroads at this point in the evening, do you have a drink and a seat, or keep it up? That's when the newly named headliner, PRAYER, steps up and delivers a set of music that will convert the sinners. Formerly THE LIBRARY, Prayer has been hiding out, working on their scripture, and will be dropping new songs for the first time at The Rumble.

The party is FREE, so no hangups there. Besides, you have a free pass to dance this evening. The lovely sister duo of DJ S.i.S. will make sure no one slips between bands.
