TONIGHT ~ THE RUMBLE: BROOKLYN @ SOUTHPAW

Tonight @ Southpaw, Future Sounds, The Musebox, Sound Fix Records and DeFalco Presents bring you THE RUMBLE: BROOKLYN. The line-up is stellar.....

Sounding like a Tarantino film in stereo, BLACK TAXI seduces with the seediness of a pulp fiction novel; a decaying sideshow that's as sexy as it is punk rock. Lyrics paint woozy pictures of Kerouac-ian misadventures, featuring a rotating cast of transvestites, bible-thumpers and corrupt cops. A cavalier concoction of carnival trumpets, swaggering bass lines and smoldering guitar, BLACK TAXI plays like a vintage spaghetti western dressed up in neon lights...the soundtrack to that desert road trip you should have taken back when your girl dumped you and you chanced upon her acid cache. Check out recent review of new LP Things of Nature

Also joining the bill will be THE ART OF SHOOTING. We can't wait...especially to hear the new tunes from Traveling Show. Traveling Show was produced by Keith Souza at Machines with Magnets Studios in Pawtucket, RI, home to the recording of the newest Battles album, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Chinese Stars, Made in Mexico, and many many more. Infectious and driving, the simplicity of the songs and styling are what make The Art Of Shooting one of the most interesting bands on the Brooklyn scene right now. Aggressive, dissonant lullabies mixed with a hint of Detroit Rock City, Southern Swing, and Circus flair. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Kelly Irene Corson growls, shrieks, and hums her way through the set with a vibrato and falsetto vocally consistent with Siouxsie Sioux and Kristen Hersh, but energetically matched with David Byrne.

"These dynamic tuned, jerky rhythmed, acerbic tongued, goth tinged, two girl/one boy Brooklyn art punks might've fit right in on Rough Trade in 1980, or opening for Siouxsie a few years later." - Village Voice

"Eerie, unearthly melodies promise to haunt your dreams."- CMJ

"Full-scale girl-led power-trio with a no-wave influenced assault in the vein of luminaries such as ERASE ERRATA and their early '80s ancestors... Singer/guitarist KELLY CORSON can go from a whisper to a scream at a moment's notice." - The Big Takeover

BOCAT (formerly Case Quarter) were brought together during a card game on a New York street corner. All four members found themselves pitched in to the pot as antes. Two were new to New York and two had been bouncing from pocket to cash register and vending machines around the city for years. As the card players placed bets around them, more and more money was dropped on them from above until they were completely covered from view by green dollar bills. To pass the time one quarter, a 1976 bicentennial, started playing a beat on his military drum. The next, a 2000 South Carolina quarter, yelled "You lie!" The other two quarters saw the humor in this remark and asked him to say it again but this time to sing it in rhythm to the drum beat. On the second time he sang "You lie!" the two other quarters, a shiny 2000 Virginia Quadricentennial and a 2001 New York Statue of Liberty sang in harmony. Each of the four quarters immediately had a tiny light bulb appear over their George Washington profiles and quickly hatched a plan. It was decided that when the winner picked up the pile of money, the four quarters were to jump as far as they could and hopefully land on a roll for the nearest drain hole. However, the winners hands were sure and quite large. The plans for escape were ended as the four quarters found themselves dropped into a dark pocket making music as they crashed against each other. The bicentennial drummer remarked, "Look on the bright side. It provides us with a great place to rehearse." They just had to find a way to stay together... and, oh yeah, we decided to rename ourselves BOCAT. To be continued!

WE ARE VERY PROUD TO ANNOUNCE...PLAYING THE NEXT RUMBLE ON FEBRUARY 13TH@SOUTHPAW, AN ARTIST WHOSE MUSIC AND STAGE SHOW HAS BEEN WOWING AUDIENCES EVERYWHERE! THIS ONE IS GONNA BE NUTS!!!

TONIGHT - THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES @ 3 CLUBS

It's here - THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES burns tonight at 3 Clubs with 3 bands we love on a silver platter for FREE. AUSHUA, CHASING KINGS & CAT PARTY with DJ's S.i.S. will handle all the entertaining. Watch the National Championship game at the bar before the party kicks off with John and the Longhorn fans.

For once, don't be sooooo LA tonight and get there early for a change and catch a band whose 7"'s and EP's have owned me, and look for their track, "Tar & Feathers" to appear on Future Sound 34 (due out hopefully by the end of January) - CAT PARTY.

"Once upon a summer we were desperate to be younger still..."

The lyrics pulled straight from the title track of the CHASING KINGS EP, "The Current State Of Our Future", these youngsters have old souls. See the interview below for more on these guys.

Headlining the party is the band from Santa Ana known as AUSHUA, who are showing off their latest EP, "Limbo" at shows all over Southern California recently, and tonight we get the treat. We meant to do a nice interview with them and hear more about this new output of tracks but time kept on slipping, slipping, slipping...into the future....

The party is FREE and brought to you by Future Sounds, RM64, BMI, Buzzbands.LA, Stranded In Stereo, WOXY, The Owl Mag and Spin Earth.

TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO - THE RUMBLE: SF - COMPANY OF THIEVES - A B & THE SEA

Rumblin' into night three of THE RUMBLE west coast run, we stop in San Francisco tonight at Harlot with COMPANY OF THIEVES and A B & THE SEA. San Francisco's A B & The Sea just played up in Portland at our Rumble warehouse party and they hijacked Evan and are spending quality time together in a van, watching Oregon and Northern California pass by the windows. Of course the mandatory stop in Weed, California for photos and spiritual uplifting is in order.
Company of Thieves just headlined Spaceland in LA this past weekend and are spending time in the bay and doing a mini-set at 11pm. Our guest DJ this month is Aaron Axelsen from Popscene and Live 105 FM. Everytime he's played with resident DJ, Bagel Ted (Bagel Radio),it's been memorable as they seem to bring out the very best in one another.

THE RUMBLE SAN FRANCISCO ANNOUNCED FOR APRIL

Next Wednesday at Harlot in San Francisco, the Rumble returns with a band in from Norway called SIMON SAYS NO. I caught them at SXSW and if you're fans of bands like FILM SCHOOL, EDITORS or CHAVEZ. Our guest blogger this month is one of my favorite Bay area reads, THE BAY BRIDGED, and they booked LEOPOLD & HIS FICTION, a band we've been playing consistently since discovery on the FS show on WOXY. On the turntables this month with our resident BAGEL TED, will be VIN SOL, so you know there will be dancing.

Jacek scored big and has made $2 Pilsner Urquells or Peroni beers available from 8-9:30pm.

As always, you can get in for free if you RSVP here > http://sonicliving.com/theowlmag/therumble

It's $5 if you don't. Thanks to Julie Suchard for the sweet poster.

We've got one helluva show on tonight in Manhattan at Fontana's! Kanine Records' latest act, DRINK UP BUTTERCUP + JEAN ON JEAN + OPERAHOUSE (can't get enough of this band from Manchester) and the top off is that PLUSHGUN will be performing for their CD release party (Tommy Boy Records) for their release "Pins & Panzers". We're very proud of Dan and Plushgun since watching them bust into the world on FS31 with single, "Just Impolite".
