THE RUMBLE WEST COAST DATES ANNOUNCED - TWIN TIGERS PLAY THROUGH

It seems that it was just yesterday we we're knee deep in Hologram Jams (out now on Fat Possum btw) from last month's RUMBLE band, the mighty JAGUAR LOVE. We had a terrific time with that circuit and seeing the room go wild each time the duo roared into office favorites "Postcards and Red Wine" or "I Started a Fire." The response to the JL love couldn't have been better and before I tell you about March info, I want to extend a HUGE thanks to anyone that came out to any of the dates, all our sponsors and all the venues! Let's move onto MARCH!

We have so many RUMBLE parties in March that we need to roll them out systematically all the way into our 4 Rumble parties at SXSW in Austin (including the Super Rumble night party).

It all starts though in Seattle on Monday night at the Havana Social Club with two quality SEA based acts:
HAIR ENVELOPE & NIGHTMARE AIR. We've spun both of these bands heavily on the FS radio show on WOXY, from Hair Envelope's brilliant "Largo Lagos' to the spin-off act sporting 2 members of FILM SCHOOL - Nightmare Air. If you've heard 'Who Who Lies Who Down' you understand what force DD and crew puts into each track, and by the way, that is Mr Dupuis on vocals.

THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO next Wednesday has the subtitle of being the official 'Noise Pop Hangover Show', because NP2010 has taken over the Bay Area this week and weekend, and if you haven't had enough great music, we offer up this incredible line-up:
There is no way to hide our absolute LOVE for LILOFEE. We put out their 7" vinyl for the single, 'Runaway' at the end of 2009, and are set to drop their second single, 'Destroy Me' (+a video + a remix) on Future Sounds Records in March. Stay tuned for more info on that release.

STRIPMALL ARCHITECTURE we were just introduced to but after listening to the Myspace songs and vibing their influences, we're instant fans. Here's what the SF WEEKLY had to say:
"Does the mention of a band somewhere in-between Sigur Ros and the Cocteau Twins make those little hairs on the back of your neck tingle? If so, you owe it to yourself to check for Stripmall Architecture's show." Resident DJ, BAGEL TED, will handle the DJ duties.

That leads us to TWIN TIGERS from Athens, Georgia, a band that will be playing through the circuit starting in SF, into LA, San Diego, and will be playing THE RUMBLE: LAS VEGAS that will be a part of the NEON REVERB MUSIC FESTIVAL on the 12th. They will keep the wheels turning to Austin and will be playing THE RUMBLE @ SXSW at Shangra La, as well as 6 other parties (including the WOXY Official SXSW showcase @ Emo's Annex on Friday night).

Red Fox Run by Twin Tigers from Robert Thomason on Vimeo.

Their debut record - 'Gray Waves' on Old Flame Records drops Tuesday, March 2nd and the album is a flamethrower. We're thrilled to include 'Passive Idol' on the upcoming Future Sounds 34 release. Here's what AQUARIUM DRUNKARD has to say about it: "A four piece, the bands live show kills, reminiscent of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Psychocandy era JAMC."

So Twin Tigers will hit Los Angeles for THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES @ 3 Clubs on Thursday and we all had good fortune smile upon us when RUMSPRINGA stepped forward to headline our party as they prep for SXSW. We've been fans for some time and finally got our opportunity to bring them into that 3 Clubs backroom where they will take it apart. Our lovely resident DJ's, S.i.S. are always present, and always bring their smiles and great selections.

Opening up LA, but headlining THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO is a band that we're freaked out about - BEATERS. This band heads out on tour as direct support to THE SOFT PACK post-SXSW, and we get to double-dip with them in both cities, in our effort to show swap San Diego and Los Angeles bands together. They had us from the first 30 seconds of "Fishage". TWIN TIGERS will continue their tear of the West Coast at Bar Pink on Saturday night, and a San Francisco act that is a Rumble veteran, BIRDS & BATTERIES, round out the bill in SD. We're big fans of their single, "The Villain" off their 'Up To No Good EP'.

We'll be announcing the line-up for THE RUMBLE:LAS VEGAS, which is the featured show at this year's NEON REVERB FESITVAL on Friday night, as well as all the details surrounding the four SXSW Rumble parties. THE RUMBLE: NEW YORK will also be announced next week - New venue, back in the big apple.

CAUGHT LIVE: TOMORROWS TULIPS & FREE ENERGY

On this muggy day in LA, let's revisit some of the most-recently caught bands on our radar, in a section we call CAUGHT LIVE.

TOMORROW'S TULIPS

Costa Mesa darling duo (they actually are dating- none of that White Stripes head-scratching) Tomorrow's Tulips were formed after Al Knost called it a day with his band of Vice-signed surf-rockers Japanese Motors and after his sweetheart Christina Kee had mentioned she always wanted to be in band. Kee picked picked up the drum sticks while Knost continued on with his SoCal lazy beach-baked croon (he told the crowd about how one of his favorite bands are "the grooviest" last night at Spaceland) and stony "Wipeout" guitar jangles onto the duo's debut cassette Yesterday's Demos. Their set was solid, as means to fill the (fairly empty) room with a fluid groove of background music. Let's hope they graduate from bedroom-cassette territory and hit the studio after their tulips become a full-fledged bouquet.

FREE ENERGY

A giant hoagie of Fonzie thumbs-up confidence, Superchunk bounciness, Ramones power-pop drive (Spector-produced years) mashed between slices of ZZ Top finger-riffin', DFA-signed, Philadelphia-based Free Energy might just be your new favorite head-bobbing, summertime jammers. Phew, and you were starting to wonder about what comes after the snow. Open-ended lyrics like “we’re breaking out this time” and “we’re going to start a new life,” the music is infections and makes me want to do nothing but shave a moustache and hop in the ‘Cuda, sixer under my arm while air-guitar-ing the entire way to your BBQ. The quintet are days away from embarking on a nationwide stint (pre-SXSW) with Local Natives before their James Murphy-produced (LCD Soundsystem and DFA head honcho) debut Stuck on Nothing hits shelves March 9th.

APTEKA RELEASE 7" VINYL 'TRAITORS' IN TIME FOR SXSW

We've talked about this band before, APTEKA, a band from Chicago that absolutely rip live and their music runs dead at some of your favorite early '90's rock outfits, from Pumpkins to shoegaze, which is feeling mighty good in a time when the laptop acts are pressing buttons from town to town and you hunger for something that drives through your ribcage like a hot knife in butter.

Apteka is releasing 'Traitors", a 7" release with the b-side of "Aragon Sound" to correspond with their next tour this spring. The band will support Serena Maneesh at their Chicago Bottom Lounge date and look for them at one of the Rumble SXSW events as well as the Kill Red Rocket SXSW party. The limited edition Traitors will be available soon from InSound and, of course, at their live shows.

Can't wait for SXSW or don't live in Chicago but want to hear this blazing wall of sound? Download 'Traitors' HERE

BY:LARM NIGHT #3 - 4AD PARTY + SHOW HOPPING

Fuzzy. That's what it was, very very fuzzy late night at SENTRUM SCENE when SERENA MANEESH took over the 4AD party at By:Larm on evening #3 of the festival. The place was wall to wall for SM's wall of sound that obviously bows at the alter of 'Loveless'. Dropping many news songs off their latest effort, 'S-M 2: Abyss In B Minor', I felt like someone slipped me a mickey. Also on the 4AD bill were highly-touted EFTERKLANG and OH NO ONO. Efterklang rolls eight deep on stage, part electronic, part folk, part orchestra. I can't say it was remarkable but the intent was well meaning. Oh No Ono on the other hand, ohhhh noooooo!

Jumpin' Joe from WOXY and I decided to see as many venues as possible, despite this place only getting colder by the minute. SEABEAR did their thing at GAMLA, a great venue that feels like some old vaudeville joint, and I liked what I heard from THE RUMOUR SAID FIRE at the By:Larm Tent. KATHINKA has lots of potential, the fuzz is there. There was also a quick stop at Stratos for the STEREOGUM party, then we caught acts like PHONE JOAN, TWINS TWINS and got to see the band I'm stalking, THE MEGAPHONIC THRIFT again, without my earplugs and in the front row. What??

BY:LARM NIGHT #2 - THE MEGAPHONIC THRIFT IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Remember this band name. In fact, write it down now. The next step up the ladder from A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS, mixing MBV with SONIC YOUTH, but basically a cat caught in a ceiling fan comes close to describing the shear furious and glorious noise that makes up The Megaphonic Thrift from Bergen, Norway. We caught them last night at a jam-packed Rockefeller here in Oslo and after suffering through this band that pretended to be country, these kids came out and dropped the rock gauntlet on everyone that left us shaking. The band gets the Sonic Youth tag quite a bit, and they definitely bow to SY but feel like they have their own spin on things.

I had a chance to sit down with them in the hotel, in between their five performances at By:Larm and ended up liking them even more. What's not to like about a band that pulls their name from GUIDED BY VOICES, and what 'an odd assembly' they truly are. Basically they are built from the ashes of a number of popular Norwegian bands like CASIOKIDS, THE LOW FREQUENCY and SYME and STEREO21, but even being from Bergen, where electro-pop is king (Datarock, Annie, Royksopp), they fly back in the face of that movement with a sound that cries out that the end is near on that front and that good, old fashioned rock and roll is back. Many describe them as shoegaze, but it's not accurate, even if MBV swerves in and out. This is a band that isn't shy and has no problem staring straight ahead, even glaring at you because they have the goods to back it up and more importantly, the songs.

Last night's set was blistering. It was exhilarating. The band that performed before them ended their set trying to get the audience to scream 'power' over and over again, but it was The Megaphonic Thrift that didn't have to say it, they made you feel it. It was a good, old-fashioned ass-whipping is what it was.

The band was signed by A&R guru, Phil Hutcheon of Deadly Records for the UK (he heard them on Myspace and signed them virtually), and they drop their EP, 'Decay Decoy' on due for release in Norway
on Hype City in March and internationally in the fall. The vinyl is what we are waiting for, but I know have a copy of the album in my grubby hands and it's brilliant. The US is wide open and the band is heading to Austin for SXSW next month to plant seeds for the future. Look for them to play one of our gigs if we're lucky next month.

I should have some video soon enough that Joe of WOXY/THE FUTURIST took of the show last night to link to later today, as well as highlights from the CASIOKIDS set that followed at Rockefeller. Casiokids by the way were also tremendous! They are a party in a box, a band that plays by no rules and goes from one extreme to another, creating a rave-like atmosphere and they sold me completely once three monkeys appeared on stage with them. Their track, "En Vill Hest" should be an indie hit this year, at least on a planet with good taste.

BY:LARM IN NORWAY BEGINS - FA FA FA-KING COLD

The kick-off to Norway's BY:LARM festival happened last night and if this is any indication as to how the next three nights will be, I'm impressed. Surviving jetlag and temperatures beyond my toasty LA conditions, I got to the By:Larm Tent and it was completely stuffed to see THE NEW WINE, a band we've been into for some time, and then the local heroes - DATAROCK in all their Royal Tenenbaum-track suit wearing glory. Imagine a place where people dance, smile and drink tons of expensive beer? Finishing off the night with some fish & chips from a street venor, a nice way to finish a long day of travels.

FUTURE SOUNDS RADIO DEBUTS 2.15.10

More information on artists that debuted on today's Future Sounds radio show on WOXY....

THE SMITH WESTERNS
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Chicago
TRACK: Boys Are Fine

Having endorsements from Gorilla Vs. Bear and Mark Ronson will automatically land you in the Buzzin’ column in most place, and these under-agers from Chicago have everything going for them it seems. Catch them at SXSW. Unsigned

MURDOCKS
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Austin
TRACK: OMG

Jangley indie rock music is what Austin’s Murdocks create, mixing as much Strokes as they do Sloan. Around since 2003 but roaring back since their ‘Roar EP’ dropped on Surprise Truck Records.

YOUNG RIVAL
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Hamilton, Canada
TRACK: Modern Life

The last time we were in Hamilton, Canada we caught The Village People at McMaster University, where was Young Rival when I needed them? Formerly Ride Theory, they have transformed from sounding like The Monkees into BRMC, which translates into the Canadian Mando Diao. The latest EP, ‘Young Rival’ gives you both barrels. Unsigned

BOOMSNAKE
Myspace
HOMETOWN: San Diego
TRACK: Sticks Stones & Animal Bones

San Diego? Again? The city’s music scene has exploded coincidentally at the same time as the Tijuana drug wars started leaving heads on this side of the border. Sezio tipped us off to these cats, and you can download their album off their web site for free. Grizzly Records

BY: LARM FESTIVAL PREVIEW

THE MEGAPHONIC THRIFT
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Bergen, Norway
TRACK: Candy Sin

Sounding like ‘Dirty’ era Sonic Youth, Norway’s The Megaphonic Thrift could be most anticipated act to see at By:Larm this week in Oslo. Please don’t let me down…..Playing SXSW in March.

WHEN SAINTS GO MACHINE
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Copenhagen, Denmark
TRACK: New Elvis

At first listen you’d swear this was Kele of Bloc Party’s new project, instead it’s the Danish BP meets TV On The Radio. EMI Scandinavia

KATHINKA
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Bergen, Norway
TRACK: Luck

This band immediately jumped out at me, and again has a Sonic Youth influence to it, and then I find out that some of the members are in The Megaphonic Thrift. Another act I must see live this week.

DENGA DENGA
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Bergen, Norway
TRACK: I Roll In The Mud

Listening through hundreds of By:Larm bands, some speed metal, some instrumentals, when I got to Denga Denga I smiled and knew that I had a new act that will be a regular on the FS radio show for some time. Think Belle & Sebastian meets TV Personalities. Unsigned

EFTERKLANG
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Copenhagen, Denmark
TRACK: Cutting Ice To Snow

I’ve been hearing rumors about this band being as big as The Beatles in Europe, and the buzz has them already making everyone’s ‘must see’ list at SXSW next month. 4AD Records

CCTV
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Olso, Norway
TRACK: We Belong

This is like classic Britpop – Very very Blur, which in my book, is a great place to start. Let’s see how the hometown heroes perform live this week. Unsigned

CASIOKIDS
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Bergen, Norway
TRACK: En Vill Hest

If Vampire Weekend can go to Graceland, so too can Casiokids. World influences run wild with this electro-indie outfit that site Fela Kuti and Cornelius as influences. Moshi Moshi

THE DEER TRACKS
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Gävle, Sweden
TRACK: 127 Sexfyra

Blips and bops, glitchey, and electro in a Knife-way, this Swedish duo – David Lehnberg & Elin Lindfors – make Postal Service music that’s gorgeous. Dezpotz Records

THE LITTLE HANDS OF ASPHALT
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Oslo, Norway
TRACK: Words That Kill

The Norwegian Death Cab For Cutie is Oslo’s The Little Hands Of Asphalt. Critically acclaimed in Norway, with the release ‘Leap Years’, it turns out the little hands is actually a one-man show. Spoon Trade Audio

I SEE HORSES
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Oslo, Norway
TRACK: Judas

Take a guy from Glasgow and mix him with some Oslo guys and you get this mash up of indie influences. I see American cross-over potential in this act that is also on my By:Larm ‘must-see’ schedule. Unsigned

PHONE JOAN
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Oslo, Norway
TRACK: The Fast Lane

Intrigued to say the very least with Phone Joan. Carina Moen’s vocals recall PJ Harvey, The Kills and even Heart. “I’m a rock n roll goddess, I’m a goddamn princess with my high heels on” she purrs on ‘The Fast Lane’. Unsigned

OH NO ONO
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Copenhagen, Denmark
TRACK: Internet Warrior

Psychedelic/hippie/MGMT type of stuff, but way stranger – bouncey and very, very interesting. They are on Friendly Fire Records in the US, and headed to SXSW in March.

JULIAN BERNTZEN
Myspace
HOMETOWN: Oslo, Norway
TRACK: Rocket Ship Love

I’m looking forward to my interview with Julian Berntzen in Oslo this week because the instant that The Musebox turned me onto his music, I became a fan. The looks of Elvis Costello, but sounding perfect alongside Peter Bjorn & John, this seems like a slam-dunk for KCRW. Vertigo Records

CAUGHT LIVE: EDITORS & THE ANTLERS @ THE WILTERN

This past Thursday night, a true collision of genres presented itself, as the historic Wiltern Theater hosted a diverse night of musical gratification featuring THE ANTLERS and the EDITORS.

Brooklyn based band, The Antlers were an absolute delight, filling the ornate walls of the venue with their dreamy, yet sparse gems. Playing selected favorites of their 2009 release Hospice, The Antlers were utterly enchanting. Led by Peter Silberman, The Antlers, make beautifully haunting music, the kind of sounds that stay with you. The acoustics of this vintage venue combined with Silberman’s high vocal range resulted in an amazingly memorable set. The quite intensity of tracks like “Bear” and “Two” possessing the power to seep into your veins; their swirly, billowy sound most definitely resonating.

Headliners, the Editors displayed their knack for creating anthem-esque tunes, as these Birmingham natives displayed their technical prowess, producing an arena quality sound better suited for festivals. Shades of Interpol and Joy Division abound, the Editors are easily one of the better semi-mainstream Brit synth-pop bands to come across the pond.
With a set list heavily populated with cuts off their newest release, In This Light and On This Evening, tracks such as “You Don’t Know Love” and “The Big Exit” most definitely highlighted the band’s new direction complimented by Chris Urbanowicz’s guitar work. Old fav’s “Lights” and “Blood,” both off the critically acclaimed 2005 debut, The Back Room. They finished up the nearly 90-minute set with “Walk the Fleet Road” and “Papillion,” along with soaring renditions of “Munich,” and “Fingers in the Factories” nicely rounded out their four-song encore. Judging by the crowd, it’s safe to assume that Tom Smith and company have tapped into the Morrissey/Smiths Los Angeles fan base and won’t have a problem filling the house at their next West Coast show.

TONIGHT @ BEERLAND - THE RUMBLE: AUSTIN OPENS IT'S DOORS

We've been building our beast in other towns, each one prepping us for the day we got to open our doors to THE RUMBLE in Austin, Texas, the indie rock capitol of the US. At long last - TONIGHT - we are thrilled to bring you THE RUMBLE: AUSTIN @ Beerland.

Austin marks our eighth city in the Rumble circuit, and it's sort of a homecoming in that our family - WOXY - lives and breathes in Austin, and it's home to us every year for SXSW and ACL. Future Sounds and WOXY have teamed up with other like-minded folks like WATERLOO RECORDS, THE AUSTINIST, THE ONION AV CLUB and SPIN EARTH to bring you this monthly party that is always FREE, and always promised to bring you amazing live acts from up-and-comers as well as surprises from time to time.

Headlining this inaugural party is TV TORSO, someone we've been enjoying plenty on the WOXY airwaves with a touch of Spoon and a touch of class in their sound.

Another act we've been following closely from out West, DIRTY DANCING will also perform. This is some dark music, think Tom Waits meets The Bad Seeds. This act could break out because after all, no one puts baby in a corner.

Opening up the Rumble is the youngsters that are making their rounds and creating their own culture - THE HAPPEN-INS. Reminiscent of when The Stones bled old Blues records starting out, The Happen-Ins have had their fair share of nights with their John Lee Hooker records.

The WOXY DJ's will be handling the music, as they always do, between the acts and did we already mention that this party is FREE?

BEERLAND is located at 711 Red River Street

MtyMx

NYC hipster promoter cum laude Todd P, has for the past four years, booked a (somewhat) alternative to SXSW, at Ms. Bea's in Austin. It's been a party that generally brings 100 or so bands and a couple thousand fans. Well, this year Todd is hooking up with promotors Yo Garage and going across the border- to Monterrey, Mexico- and bringing quite the collection of blog-loving buzz bands with him. 75 bands, split over three days (25/day) including 'headliners' No Age, Andrew WK, Dan Deacon, Acid Mothers Temple (from Japan y'all), Neon Indian, Toro y Moi, Tanlines, Pocahaunted, Grant Hart of Hüsker Dü and a great big pile of the best indie/rock/punk/lo-fi/whatever-you-want-to-call-it gaze bands from Mexico you've (most likely) never heard. They are calling the all-ages art and music festival MtyMx.

The event will take place on the lot of an old drive-in movie theatre (thanks to BV) which has no doubt already given some of of the younger bands reason to get excited: "Dude we're playing an all-ages show in Mexico at an abandoned drive-in in the sweltering sun. PARTY!" One of the best things of the day- besides the sheer ass-kicking promotions work on P and YG's part in getting quite the impressive roster of 'it' bands all in one place (No Age, Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Pictureplane, Fucked Up, Dan Deacon) is that there will be no overlapping sets and the entire three-day, 75 (more might be added) band blowout is only $30 for the entire weekend. On-site camping and discounted hotel rates are available (also cheap at $35-$45 per night). It's also great, (being that I grew up in CO) they are bringing Rhinoceropolis (collective/venue/DIY heroes) on board to guest curate.

No doubt many of the posts on MtyMx will end this way, but here it goes: Viva La Mexico!
