CAUGHT LIVE: EDITORS & THE ANTLERS @ THE WILTERN

This past Thursday night, a true collision of genres presented itself, as the historic Wiltern Theater hosted a diverse night of musical gratification featuring THE ANTLERS and the EDITORS.

Brooklyn based band, The Antlers were an absolute delight, filling the ornate walls of the venue with their dreamy, yet sparse gems. Playing selected favorites of their 2009 release Hospice, The Antlers were utterly enchanting. Led by Peter Silberman, The Antlers, make beautifully haunting music, the kind of sounds that stay with you. The acoustics of this vintage venue combined with Silberman’s high vocal range resulted in an amazingly memorable set. The quite intensity of tracks like “Bear” and “Two” possessing the power to seep into your veins; their swirly, billowy sound most definitely resonating.

Headliners, the Editors displayed their knack for creating anthem-esque tunes, as these Birmingham natives displayed their technical prowess, producing an arena quality sound better suited for festivals. Shades of Interpol and Joy Division abound, the Editors are easily one of the better semi-mainstream Brit synth-pop bands to come across the pond. With a set list heavily populated with cuts off their newest release, In This Light and On This Evening, tracks such as “You Don’t Know Love” and “The Big Exit” most definitely highlighted the band’s new direction complimented by Chris Urbanowicz’s guitar work. Old fav’s “Lights” and “Blood,” both off the critically acclaimed 2005 debut, The Back Room. They finished up the nearly 90-minute set with “Walk the Fleet Road” and “Papillion,” along with soaring renditions of “Munich,” and “Fingers in the Factories” nicely rounded out their four-song encore. Judging by the crowd, it’s safe to assume that Tom Smith and company have tapped into the Morrissey/Smiths Los Angeles fan base and won’t have a problem filling the house at their next West Coast show.

The cool part about the Spaceland show is that along with everyone's favorite freaks, GRAM RABBIT, you get a chance to hear the new songs from THE SPORES, someone I've been meaning to blog about for awhile now since I was handed their excellent new release. If you haven't heard them before, get over to their site and listen to their 'doom pop'. A full length is being scheduled to drop soon on SideCho Records.

In other news, the UK act, OK TOKYO that we like so much, are self-releasing only 99 copies of their The Sums / Electro Metro CD available for pre-order through the band's official site at www.oktokyo.co.uk.

According to their email blast, the CD features 2 tracks, "Sums" which is the first ever OK Tokyo track and is a dirty indie / sleazy rock anthem, and "Electro Metro" is a pop ridden / filth funk tribute to everything that is wrong with the world.

In Arizona tonight, DUST & BLOOD are set to play at ANDERSON'S FIFTH ESTATE for a warm up show for EDGEFEST.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE:

CONSTANTINES, a band I think is truly important and not to be confused with that American Idol goon, have signed with ARTS & CRAFTS Records. Another score for A&C, however on a sad note, DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS (FS08) have called it quits.


EDITORS (FS18) perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tonight, Friday, September 21st on NBC at 11:30pm/10:30c. Damn, seems like yesterday we had them on Future Sounds as a demo, now they're all Jay Leno and shit. Congrats!

Hopefully you remember THAO NGUYEN from Future Sounds 25, well her new material produced by Tucker Martine is amazing and for all of you NYC listers, she'll be out East playing with her band THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN at 9 PM this Sunday the 23rd at Living Room in NYC.

FUTURE SOUNDS UPDATES

I just received four new songs, unmixed, from a band I've been yapping about for some time - LA's SABROSA PURR. I just keep playing it again and again, mostly because I'm addicted to the scream. Now, if you've received Future Sounds over the years, I generally don't respond to many heavy bands that scream, but when you nail it, you nail it. SP's frontman, Will Love, has the best scream in the music business. These tracks will make up their forthcoming release, 'To The Crickets and The Ghosts'. My favorites so far are 'Mary On The Side' and the monster 'Killing The Aries'. Think JANES ADDICTION meets FU MANCHU. Raw power indeed.

LIONS & TIGERS (FS26) are playing tonight at the Luna Lounge in Brooklyn with THE JAGUAR CLUB.
The BAND OF THIEVES will be featured on Fox's GOOD DAY NEW YORK tomorrow morning at 8:30am, performing 'Woman', one of my feel good songs of the summer.

The new INTERPOL - Our Love To Admire is good, and maybe in time it will grow on me, but I'm kinda underwhelmed so far after 5-6 plays. I think it's because I always have such high expectations, and that first record is one of the best. It's better than most, but I wonder how big it can go with the help of Capitol Records?


Long time FUTURE SOUNDER- DAVID HOPKINS, has a new CD out called 'Running With Knives'. It's self-released (for now) and has some tracks you may recall like "Meet Me In The Morning" (FS23). Rumor has it the Hopper has moved to LA. His name was also 'Buzzin' on HITS yesterday.







Two acts that I really love, DAVID VANDERVELDE (FS27) and BLITZEN TRAPPER, are heading out on the road together here in July across the country.

The new album by EDITORS - 'An End Has A Start' debuted at #1 in the UK, selling over 60,000 copies in the first week. They've come a long way from being unsigned on FS18 ("Bullets") !!! Congrats to a great live band.

I ran across a link on a blog somewhere for the London band, BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB and like what I've heard thus far on Myspace. Hell, they're playing the Reading and Leeds Festivals, so they must be getting some action while being unsigned. Check out 'Cancel On Me', let it play until the end......
