TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: THE STRANGE BOYS + THE GROWLERS @ THE ECHO

One of our new favorite bands from Austin is THE STRANGE BOYS, great grimey garage rock, are in town and playing tonight at The Echo with another FS favorite - THE GROWLERS.

FUTURE SOUNDS 33 RELEASED TODAY ON ITUNES

FUTURE SOUNDS RECORDS is open for business today with the release of FUTURE SOUNDS 33 on Itunes digitally. The hard copies for subscribers go out this week.

Here's the tracklisting:

1. FITZ & THE TANTRUMSBreakin’ The Chains Of Love
Los Angeles based FITZ & THE TANTRUMS take a classic Northern Soul sound and infuse some 2009 for a cocktail of old fashioned songwriting and beats. Already picked up by DJ/tastemaker Mark Ronson and RCRDLBL.com, this new school “wrecking crew” sound like they could slide right into the Phil Spector camp. White-boy soul never sounded so good or so contemporary and relevant.
Management: Future Sounds. Legal: Gary Mandel/Gillian Bar.
Needs: US/UK booking.
Fitz & The Tantrums – Songs For A Break-Up Vol. 1 EP – Unsigned

2. THE NIGHTS Lonely Soul
Lonely Soul” is one of those tracks that feels familiar, even after the first listen. This Los Angeles based act is relatively new to the scene and have started to raise their profile locally while at the same time delivering a couple of demo recordings worthy of major attention. Their self-titled EP will be done by the end of June.
Needs: Management, legal, booking
The Nights – Demos – Unsigned

3. LILOFEE – Lock & Key
San Francisco four-piece, LILOFEE, get their name from a German fairytale and inspiration from frontwoman Kimi Recor’s wild imagination and even wilder stage presence. If Ladytron and The Knife got together and added a dash of Interpol you might get close to the dark force that is LILOFEE. “Lock & Key” should be this year’s Ting-Tings/Santogold crowd favorite.
Management: Future Sounds. Needs: Legal, US/UK booking.
Lilofee – The Only Years – Unsigned

4. LOCAL NATIVES – Airplanes
LA is pumping out the new artists of late, and this five-piece has people chasing. LOCAL NATIVES produce music that with layers and grassroots thrills. Harmonies, three-part in fact, upon harmonies are what make this band tick, much like those Fleet Foxes. Formerly CAVIL AT REST, now they are locals making lots of buzz. UK tour in July coming up.
Management: Phil Costello. Legal: Richard Grabel. Booking: Jackie Nalpant US/ David Exley UK.
Local Natives – Gorilla Manor – Unsigned

5. MUMFORD & SONS – White Blank Page
London’s MUMFORD & SONS have turned in this year’s most beautiful song, with “White Blank Page.” Big words? Perhaps, but listen and get ready for your lady to put her head on your shoulder. Ready to rival Bon Iver in 2009 for the tender, Americana thrown.
Management: Laura Taylor Booking: Lucy Dickins/Adam Voith
Mumford & Sons – Mumford & Sons EP – Chess Club Records

6. DJANGO JAMES & THE MIDNIGHT SQUIRES Giving Tree
Fronted by 18 year-old Django James (Stewart), this LA based five-piece mixes Bowie and T Rex, while remaining unique enough to sound like no one else around these days. Live, this band is hell on wheels. Their first UK single drops in July on Once Upon A Time Records.
Management: Future Sounds. Legal: Danny Passman. Needs: Booking
Django James & The Midnight Squires – Demos – Unsigned

7. THE BROTHERS MOVEMENT – Sister
Dublin’s THE BROTHERS MOVEMENT have finished a record that sounds like what the new Verve record should’ve sounded like. Beyond just Ashcroft references, you get the best of early Oasis and touches of The Jesus & Mary Chain and Spaceman 3. Yeah, I just referenced all those bands, big words indeed, and this record has the songs to back it up. The band previously known as MAINLINE are now a five piece built around the Paxton brothers.
Management: Future Sounds. Legal: Kieren Jay. Booking: Steve Zapp, ITB. Needs: US booking.
The Brothers Movement – The Brothers Movement – Rocket Girl Records (UK)

8. ALL WRONG AND THE PLANS CHANGE I Get Down
Los Angeles-based ladies, Kassia Conway and Amy Wood have the voices of angels and have built a band around the love of Belly and Pavement. Track “I Get Down” is a hit within the first 20 seconds, the kind of song that moved the needle back when terrestrial radio still mattered. Some music supervisor somewhere is going to have a big year with this album.
Management: Future Sounds. Needs: US booking, legal.
All Wrong And The Plans Change – I’m Like Whatever – Unsigned

9. CASXIO – Seventeen
I’m only 17 but my love is for real,” says CASXIO, yet another LA act that made an impact at SXSW and is now headlining clubs locally. Think a white Prince and you’re getting close in description. Their live act should go over big anywhere that is looking for a party. This four-piece, built around the spunk of vocalist Lucas Guerin, call their music “religious funk.”
Management: Mike Merriman. Legal: Jordan Brokley. Needs: US/UK booking
Casxio – Demos – Unsigned

10. RUBBER KISS GOODBYE – We See Lights
We were intrigued by this trio from London called RUBBER KISS GOODBYE and the pedigree they posses. Interesting back-story here – the members include Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music’s kid, plus the guitarist from Ferry's band, and the former bass player for Babyshambles. It all adds up to a modern day glam rock wet kiss.
Management: Jeff Wooding. Legal: Jeff Leven. Needs: US/UK booking.
Rubber Kiss Goodbye – Demos – Unsigned

11. LOVELIKEFIRE – William
San Francisco’s LOVELIKEFIRE is a repeat offender to the Future Sounds compilation series, having first appeared on the FS26 CD years back. This time they’ve stepped out with a UK label and an album full of singles. Frontwoman Ann Yu has stepped into the spotlight and is quickly becoming a star in the making.
Management: Future Sounds. UK Booking: Ed Stringfellow Legal: Dave Kostiner Needs: US booking.
LoveLikeFire – Tear Ourselves Away - Heist Or Hit Records UK

12. AVI BUFFALO – What’s In It For?
The teenage AVI BUFFALO from Long Beach, California is a virtuoso guitar player, a la Nels Kline, who’s still in high school, as is his band. They started writing and recording at age 10 and are now only 17. I was trying to get my learner’s permit to drive when I was that age, not writing music so gentle and advanced. A recent LA residency at The Echo has spurred label and booking interest from some indie luminaries. Could be next year’s Shins.
Needs: Management, booking, legal.
Avi Buffalo – Settled Tigertail EP – Unsigned

13. LEE MEMORIAL – Long Days In Bed
Melbourne, Australia’s LEE MEMORIAL released their full-length in Australia in March 2009 but we just woke up on this sleeper, “Long Days In Bed.” Containing former members of Sleater-Kinney and Sodastream, these veterans knocked out eleven songs in four days. Heading to Europe later this year.
Manager: Karl Smith. Publishing: Mushroom Music/Admin Chrysalis Music (ASCAP). Needs: US Booking, US/EU label
Lee Memorial – The Lives Of Lee Memorial – Dot Dash Records (AU)

14. GRAN RONDE – On Our Own
Future Sounds decided to not leave Los Angeles’ GRAN RONDE on their own with their latest release of music, “Secret Rooms” that dropped on June 15th. Early on they’ve been spending time developing the UK, having finished a headlining tour and headed back.
Needs: Management, US booking.
Gran Ronde – Secret Rooms – Friends vs. Records

15. VERTIGO SMYTH – Comfort Me
VERTIGO SMYTH’s hummable “Comfort Me” is an instant classic. From the lovely Gallway, Ireland, this singer-songwriter cites Rufus Wainwright and Elliott Smith as influences, but seems to take their creative lead and manage to stay very pop-centric in his approach. Needs: Management, Legal, Booking.
Vertigo Smyth – EP No. 1 – Unsigned

OTHER ARTISTS TO WATCH:

BAND OF SKULLS – Track: Hollywood Bowl
We picked “the hit,” but we may be bold enough to call this trio’s full-length “Baby Darling Doll Face Honey” our album of 2009 thus far. They could be the new White Stripes. Shangri-La Records

DIANE BIRCH – Track: Nothing But A Miracle
It's as if Carole King’s “Tapestry" record had a baby and out popped DIANE BIRCH. This one could be a breakout in a time when no one is breaking out. S-Curve Records

THE LIMOUSINES – Track: Very Busy People
We tried to land them for FS33 but they just signed with Universal Republic so congrats for jumping the line. San Francisco based duo writing perfect indie rock songs.

EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS – Track: Home
The LA based collective sometimes contains as many as 15 members and recalls the ethos of Ken Kesey & The Merry Pranksters circa 1964, complete with a Partridge Family school bus. A phenomenon.

THE ANSWERING MACHINE – Track: Emergency
This Manchester UK act’s “Another City, Another Sorry” CD is nearly perfect and contains at least six singles. Picking one was like shooting a family member – which one goes? Heist Or Hit Records UK

SHILPA RAY & HER HAPPY HOOKERS – Track: Filthy & Free
Our favorite live act at SXSW, SHIPLA could be the second coming of Janis Joplin or Rosemary Clooney. This is dirty, sexy time music.

GENERATIONALS – Track: When They Fight, They Fight
New Orleans based white kids playing ‘60’s Motown inspired indie rock. Barry Gordy would be proud. Park The Van Records

ALSO BUZZING:
Crocodiles, The Magic Kids, Favours For Sailors, The Love Language, Solid Gold, The Low Anthem, New Villager, Violent Soho, Lissy Trullie, Zeus, The Intelligence, Pow Wow!, Wet Paint, Class Actress, Lights On, Deastro, Neon Indian, Still Flyin, French Horn Rebellion, Minnaars, French Miami, Surf City, Dark Meat, The Antlers, Baddies, Casper Bangs, Clare Maguire, I Blame Coco, The Old Romantic Killer Band, The Sound Of Arrows, Theophilus London, Apes Of Wrath, City Light, Dutch Uncles, Other Girls.

FUTURE SOUNDS 33 TO BE RELEASED ON TUESDAY JUNE 30TH

It's been forever since we've put out one of our comps, we've been busy ok, but on Tuesday June 20th we're coming strong with the release of FUTURE SOUNDS 33 on Itunes and to our loyal mailing list. It's also the kick-off of FUTURE SOUNDS RECORDS, our digital singles label.

FS33 features 15 artists that if you don't know yet, you'll know very well in the coming year. For those of you coming out to any of our July RUMBLE events in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego or New York, you can also pick up a copy of the CD.

If you've never checked out any of the previous 32 compilations, click the COMPILATIONS tab above and take a walk down memory lane with us. In most cases, those bands first appeared on the FS comp. We will also be debuting the album first on the Future Sounds radio show on WOXY.COM on Monday the 29th, so the early bird can get the worm if you tune in. I say this every time, but FS33 is the best one yet.

PHOTOS FROM LAST NIGHT'S FUTURE SOUNDS PRESENTS

It may have started off a little chilly (LA > Chilly = 68 degrees) but after SEAN BONES jumped on stage the place warmed up quickly at Space15Twenty in Hollywood. By the time LOCAL NATIVES began their set, the night was gorgeous under the stars and the glow of the Capitol Records building and Amoeba.

Here are a few pics from last night's FUTURE SOUNDS PRESENTS party....

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: FS PRESENTS SEAN BONES + LOCAL NATIVES

FUTURE SOUNDS and BUZZBANDS.LA have teamed up to present a night of up-and-coming bands at Space15Twenty in Hollywood on June 23, 2009. Party starts at 7pm.

Frenchkiss Records have released the debut album, "Rings" by Brooklyn's SEAN BONES, and we've been loving the infusion of white boys doing indie-reggae. The first two singles, "Easy Street" and "Sugar In My Spoon" were brilliant, and new track, "Dancehall" continues the rub-a-dub sound.

LA's LOCAL NATIVES could be the hottest unsigned US band in the UK at the moment, being chased around by everyone last week over there, they return home as local champions that we're very proud of. We're thrilled to announce that their song, "Airplanes" will be featured on FUTURE SOUNDS 33, to be released on June 30th.

Kevin Bronson (Buzzbands.LA) and LLDope (Future Sounds) will hit the decks tonight to warm it up for the bands and the Cool Haus Ice Cream truck is coming for free treats.

The party is FREE

TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO: THE FINAL SHOW EVER FOR THE BLACKS

Sad times indeed. Our bi-coastal friends, THE BLACKS, have decided that they'll wrap up their illustrious career with a farewell show at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco tonight. The Tambourine madness has stopped, and silence.....

We've had many previous live's with members of The Blacks dating back aways, and I'm sure members will continue to rock, because that's what they do. When they dropped their debut EP, Nom De Guerre, we loved it and added "Elegant Walk" to our Future Sounds 30 compilation. Now they leave us with a parting gift, Tiger Songs, which drops digitally on July 21st on Tricycle Records.

They decided to go out in style, adding THE FEROCIOUS FEW, a band with a recent record deal, and a band that has nothing but the heavens ahead of them, as well as THE RED VERSE, labelmates from Tricycle.

We'll miss you freaks.

TONIGHT IN NEW YORK - THE RUMBLE: NY @ FONTANA'S

THE RUMBLE: NEW YORK
Wednesday, June 17
Fontana's
105 Eldridge Street, New York NY / (212) 334 - 6740
(B or D to Grand St; F, J, M, Z to Delancey)
Show 8:30 pm / $7
Featuring Neighbors, The Royal Chains and Pinky

Summer is officially here and why not come kick off a season of great music at this month’s Rumble N.Y. party at Fontana’s this Wednesday, June 17. This month’s line-up offers a diverse range of musical stylings ranging from grunge pop to classic foot-tapping rock tunes.

Neighbors, guitarist Noah Stitleman’s solo project beckons references to Built to Spill with drawn out arrangements and melodies. Primarily recorded in Stitleman’s Brooklyn apartment, The Neighbors EP, “The Famous Torero” was completed in March 2008. Neighbors is a softer alternative to Stitleman’s other band Jacksonknife with songs like “That’s Enough” and “I’m Building I’m on Fire.”
Recently given honorable mention in The L Magazine’s “8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear,”

Called “gritty gusty music,” by NY Cool. The Royal Chains maintain pop-worthy melodies paired with tight rock beats. Singer/Guitarist Adam Roddick and bassist Dan Lawley hail from Nashville, giving The Royal Chains sound a Southern tinge combined with East Coast rock sensibilities. Their Debut EP "Crime Scene" featuring No Love in Your Punches is available now.

Brooklyn based Pinky recall 1990’s grunge with singer Tim Lynch’s vocals. Fresh off a SWSX showcase, it’s easy to tell that Pinky is influenced by the Sub Pop catalog, particularly on songs like “Autumn in New York.”

NEW RELEASES: THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS

Portland's THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS have dropped their latest full-length, "Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well" (Gigantic) today and it's a disc you need to pick up. It really is a deep dark well, slithering with TRUE BLOOD music about people doing wrong and paying the fiddler for it. "Golden & Green", "Down In This Hole" and "Barcelona" are my early favorites, but this one rattles around like a TOM WAITS record and it's roots wind down into your guts.

Their tour starts on June 18th in Portland at Wonder Ballroom and twists and turns well into August, with a stop at Lollapalooza. July 17th is the LA date at Spaceland.

FUTURE SOUNDS & FMLY PRESENT HONEY CLAWS - JUNE 19TH

FMLY, a great LA based blog known for throwing some of the most creative parties in town, have asked Future Sounds to get involved and help present the first trip to LA for Austin based freak-unit, HONEY CLAWS at Out Of Asia on June 19th. If you aren't aware of this band that is also a DJ unit, then wake the F up. It's hard to accurately describe the range of sound that is Honey Claws, one minute digital-rap, the next, straight indie rock. Listen to this, you get the idea...

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: CONSTANTINES - RAINBOW ARABIA

CONSTANTINES are headlining The Echo tonight and if you've never experienced a live show by this mighty act from Toronto, you're missing out. Matt of Insound once summed it up best when he said that seeing them perform live was like what it was probably like seeing THE CLASH in person back in the day. He's right, they just feel like an important band rather than your usual indie hipster fair-weather friends. Everyone's darlings, CRYSTAL ANTLERS are main support so this show should be worth your scratch.

Other shows of note, you have RAINBOW ARABIA and VOICES VOICES over at Spaceland for Club NME night if you're feeling arty and kinda kultural, MACK WINSTON & THE REFLECTIONS at 3 Clubs if you want to have a Keith Richards evening, and THE FRAIL at Club Moscow.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION: MEMPHIS & THE DELTA BLUES TRAIL

Memphis & the Delta Blues Trail: A Complete Guide
by
Melissa Gage & Justin Gage

If you are a daily reader of AQUARIUM DRUNKARD, then you are already familiar with the unlimited passion for music and it's history that Justin Gage puts into each and every post. Between his radio show, his blog, his record label (Autumn Tone) and his AD Presents parties, the guy has plenty going on and it always is linked to quality music with integrity. So what's a guy do with his spare time? He gets in a car with his wife and travels all the dusty backroads of this country tracking down old blues tails and legends like a regular modern day Alan Lomax. The book release is already grabbing some attention, but in typical JG fashion, he shrugs it off as no big deal, just a guy obsessed with music. Grab it off of Amazon or at here.

TONIGHT IN LA: BAND OF SKULLS + TONS OF GREAT BANDS

Tonight's a night with too many great options for live music in Los Angeles, an embarrassment of riches. If you weren't at our RUMBLE LA party last week (and that's a question you really have to ask yourself), then you simply must see BAND OF SKULLS tonight at The Echo. Say you saw them when before they become the next White Stripes. Playing with them is a band we've dropped on the FS radio show, OTHER LIVES from Stillwater, Oklahoma (listen to "Black Tables") and OLIVER FUTURE. It's also FREE.

I also love anything associated with MANIMAL VINYL and they are presenting a show tonight with our lil buddies, AVI BUFFALO downstairs at The Echoplex.

Next up is another FREE show at Spaceland, where the bill is also a bruiser: CASTELDOOR (FS30) and EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS (FS29) - the latter featuring the lovely and talented Melissa Dougherty on guitar.

If you like to go big ticket, SEBASTIEN GRAINGER & THE MOUNTAINS are supporting METRIC at The Wiltern - Sebastien is awesome!

BAND OF SKULLS - APTEKA - FRENCH MIAMI - RUMBLE LA ERUPTS

HOLY SHIT! Last night's RUMBLE: LA ripped! After a slow start thanks to the Lakers, the night ended with a fury as BAND OF SKULLS delivered on the promise they made all of us when they wrote "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey" and kicked our teeth in during their set in the tiny backroom of 3 Clubs in Hollywood. I think it'll be one of those nights that you said you were at, when gigantic band played back in the day in a tiny club to those lucky enough to be there. When the band harmonized during "Fires" the hair on my arms stood up. It had nothing to do with the Patron shots or that guy from MAD MEN dancing around like a garden nymph, it had all to do with the Skulls. After being up to my eyeballs in electro-indie band after electro-indie band, I love it when I finally get a serious dose of the RAWK! This is a special band.

Driving in from Chicago to play both west coast Rumble parties, APTEKA decided they were going to make the most of the travels. Their set was blistering and the free earplugs they provided were appreciated by anyone that wanted to actually hear their CD they just purchased at the merch booth on the drive home. I heard SABBATH, I heard FUGAZI, I heard a buzzsaw eating a belt buckle in the set that Apteka delivered. They must have rehearsed the entire drive west because they were as tight a band as I've seen live in some time. Thanks for making the trek.

I wish I had a photo of the opening act, FRENCH MIAMI from San Francisco. They got caught in the Laker game trap and even though when they started their set it was thin, it didn't phase them a bit and they also came strong and played like it was midnight. My highlight was the hopping around in the middle of "Lil' Rabbits". We'll be bringing these guys back down to LA soon.

Thanks to the lovely ladies on the turntables, S.I.S. for allowing us to shake it late night.

BIG thanks to Ryan Suffern for the photos above.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: THE RUMBLE: LA WITH BAND OF SKULLS

If tonight's live performances are anywhere near last night's in SF, those of you who aren't at Green Day will witness the real show of the night in Los Angeles. You've heard us blabber on and on about BAND OF SKULLS, or current obsession, but it was APTEKA last night that gave the champions a run for their money. They stored up all their energy on the drive from Chicago and brought the A-game. Joining the party this evening from San Francisco is FRENCH MIAMI, a band who's self-titled album is amazing. We've got some other newcomers to the evening at 3 Clubs in Hollywood, DJ's S.I.S. hit the decks and I'm told you'll want to stare at them all night instead of dance. What we have here tonight is three bands that are amazing live performers.

Guess what? Tonight's RUMBLE: LA is FREE to get in. So catch Band Of Skulls before they have to get up early and perform on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Get personal for a change in a city of cars.

TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO - THE RUMBLE: SF

They've arrived - BAND OF SKULLS. Over from London to support their new album this band is too big to play our little party, but it's happening anyway. Traveling from almost that far, Chicago, APTEKA makes their West Coast debut in SF. YONI WOLF from WHY? is the guest DJ, and the Skulls will also be spinning, and big papa, BAGEL TED, will do what he always does. Drinks specials throughout the night, party starts a little later tonight - doors are at 9PM this time.

NEW RELEASES: DIANE BIRCH - BIBLE BELT

Totally went to sleep today on the release I've been waiting on for some time now, DIANE BIRCH and her debut "Bible Belt". Rumor has it she's in LA and that she's doing something at the Hotel Cafe, so we'll be sniffing that out on the quickfast. Trust us on this one, Diane Birch has a voice so big and gorgeous, you'll need to own this record. "Nothing But A Miracle" has owned us, and soon we hope S-Curve sends us a copy so we can stop playing the same mp3 all day. Amazing stuff from a star in the making...
