TONIGHT IN THE OC: GREAT NORTHERN + THE SOFTLIGHTES

Labels: great northern, The Softlightes
Damn if we aren't proud of our friends LOVELIKEFIRE (FS26) -They made the CMJ TOP 20 this week with their self-released effort!!!
Remember way back on FS21 and an unknown artist named MERIC LONG? Well, he's now evolved into THE DODOS. Sometimes he sounds like Jeff Tweedy, but most don't realize he's an AMAZING guitarist! They are playing NYC tonight - go see this 2-man outfit.
Another Future Sounds 21 artist is getting ready to make some waves. You may recall INNAWAY, and their track, "Threathawk" (mp3), well they are about to finish up their new record, produced by Rob Campanella that is scheduled for a November drop. The good news is that they are out playing shows and playing these new songs, and here's some dates to see them play.Labels: Calvin Harris, Innaway, lovelikefire, The Dodos
Get out to EDINBURGH CASTLE tonight in the Tenderloin and see a band that will be featured on the forthcoming FUTURE SOUNDS 29 compilation, BIG BLUE WHALE. This SF 2-piece is something you need to see live. Not only can you hear a young band that will blow up quickly, you can order the best fish & chips in the city and nice Guinness to boot. Labels: Big Blue Whale
Now, it's not just because NYLES LANNON used to be a member of FILM SCHOOL that I love this record so much, it's because of everything "the sage" ever stood for pours out in his new CD, 'Pressure', set for a September 18 release on Badman Recordings. If you for some strange reason don't own his brilliant solo release, 'Chemical Friends', you have time to pick it up and be caught up with n.Lannon. It was one of those special records that will always sound great. Back to the new release, you'll want to own it, and it showcases Nyles as he matures as a songwriter and as a sage. My favorite track is "Next Obsession" (mp3), but I have many favorites so far.Labels: Nyles Lannon
San Francisco's THE BLACKS play PIANO'S tonight, and for all NY area subscribers, I recommend paying this show a visit. Frontwoman Luisa Black has that nasty grit that drags me in, kind of like Karen O on that first EP, or PJ HARVEY.

Labels: Architecture in Helsinki, Caribou, Foreign Born, M.I.A., The New Pornographers
A man with a beautiful voice and a taste for tequila, JON AUER, hits town tonight, playing as part of the Radio 8Ball show hosted by Andras Jones. If you don't know Jon from that legendary band, THE POSIES, or maybe that other legendary band he plays in, BIG STAR, then surely you've heard his solo work?Labels: Jon Auer
FS19 picks - FOREIGN BORN - have their CD release party tomorrow night at the Echo.
Former FS23 favorites, STYLOFONE have posted new songs on their Myspace. They play the 30th with MGMT at the Mercury Lounge in NY, then a tour of the east and south with TIGERCITY. You'll be hearing more from MGMT on FS29 due out in a few weeks.Labels: Band of Thieves, Foreign Born, MGMT, Styolofone, Takota, Tigercity
SABROSA PURR - If you haven't heard them yet, and you're a fan of actual rawk, then you need to hear someone with some real fury. I can't say enough about this LA 3-piece and think once their newly finished LP gets in the hands of labels, it should be a quick turnaround. As icing on the cake, they are playing with another Future Sounds favorite, THE WILDBIRDS, and best of all, it's FREE. Worth the drive out to Costa Mesa to THE DETROIT BAR.Labels: Sabrosa Purr, The Wildbirds
Dublin's DAVID HOPKINS has relocated to Los Angeles and performs tonight as a local at TANGIERS in Los Feliz. The treat tonight is that he has his band with him. Here's a taste of the Hopper - "Meet Me In The Morning" (mp3) - thanks to Caffeine-Headache.Labels: David Hopkins

Labels: Dust and Blood
A bunch of great bands on this bill - Future Sounds favorites like LOVELIKEFIRE, THE HUNDRED DAYS, and MISTER LOVELESS!Labels: lovelikefire, Mister Loveless, The Hundred Days
This band I've been enjoying for over three weeks and they just got snipped from the final cut of FUTURE SOUNDS 29, but I've been in love with THIEVES LIKE US and their dancefloor anthem 'Drugs In My Body' (mp3) - thanks to Cause=Time. If I were still DJ'ing out like I used to, this would be the staple in my set. They met in Berlin, two are from Sweden, one from New York City, they now live in NYC and anyone that snags their name from NEW ORDER, you know I relate to (see The Killers). This is one of those 'hands-in-the-air' songs in a club that unites everyone dancing.Labels: Thieves Like Us
So in case you missed it last night, FILM SCHOOL returned after a 13 month layoff and dropped a set of almost entirely new songs off HIDEOUT at their SOLD OUT show at Spaceland in Silverlake. The new line-up played with confidence and the vocal addition from Lorelei Plotczyk sounded gorgeous and lush. A wall of sound rolled out on us, complete with horns, and buzz saws, and sirens. We got some classic older tracks in the encore, as the band seemed genuinely happy about the opportunity to show off their new toys. The hardworking, and hard rockin' PELA threw down a set that would make BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN proud, as their frontman puts in a workin' man's day at work and reminds me of CONSTANTINES or even at times GUIDED BY VOICES. It was great to hear "Lost To The Lonesome" live finally for me.Labels: film school, Pela
For me, the long wait is over. FILM SCHOOL returns, with a new album, a new line up, and a new home base in Los Angeles. The great PELA supports, and DOWNTOWN UNION opens up. Film School's 'Hideout' is scheduled for release on September 11th, and so far reaction to the record has been amazing.Labels: film school, Pela
There is no reason you should miss seeing THE AVETT BROTHERS at the El Rey tonight supporting Langhorn Slim. Their album, Emotionalism, is brilliant. Don't believe me? Then go to Itunes, and listen to these 3 songs:Labels: The Avett Brothers
You may have just read the PITCHFORK exclusive on the SHOUT OUT LOUDS North American Tour in October, but what it didn't mention was that we here at TANKFARM FUTURE SOUNDS are supporting the bands. It's an honor, and a long time coming for a band we've loved since February 2004. Some of you old time subscribers will remember them from when we had them on Future Sounds 10 - here's the original write up:
What's more is that the tour has two other 'future stars' on it in JOHNOSSI and NICO VEGA. JOHNOSSI are also from Stockholm, Sweden, and this two-piece is on V2 in Europe and will be releasing their US debut - self-titled - on Control Group on October 9th. These guys are electric live - you really need to head on over to Youtube and do a search on them. Here's one video anyway to save you some time: http://youtube.com/watch?v=kAc-nnuteHQ

WOW! After hearing from two of my favorite female A&R reps in a matter of a day about one artist, I had to investigate. This one absolutely sizzles!! The artist is SAM SPARRO and he drops the rival to CALVIN HARRIS' 'The Girls' for party jam of the summer with 'Black & Gold'. The release party for the album 'Black & Gold' is set for August 25th on Modus Vivendi Music. I can see this one heating up into a sensation pretty quickly.

Not just because I call my car by the same name, Melbourne, Australia's LITTLE RED was sent my way and I took a special liking to them. Calling themselves "the world's grooviest white R&B group", they have a way out-throw back sound. Even the legendary Regal Records got a hold of them to use 'Waiting' on their 'Regal Singles Club' series. My favorite cut is 'Coca Cola', which has this 'Town Called Malice' kinda bounce to it. Triple J radio down under is spinning them, and gigs with ART OF FIGHTING and THE SHOUT OUT LOUDS coming up.Labels: Little Red
What looks like a great night of indie rock music is happening tonight at the Silverlake Lounge. The show is presented by Aquarium Drunkard, and I especially like what I've heard from BLAIR. I haven't seen any of these bands live yet, but this is the perfect reason to tonight.Labels: Blair, Le Switch, Travel By Sea
Just catching up after doing some traveling, but while I was away I enjoyed some long plane flights with a couple of acts that I've only recently discovered. The first is the Manchester, England group, CHERRY GHOST. Their song '4AM' is the kind of tune that JIMMY WEB would've written, very breezy country that reminds me of my favorite MOBY GRAPE song, "8:05". They are turning into a big deal in the UK, playing all the summer festivals, and they are on Heavenly Records, but so far it hasn't caught on here in the States. Another track is "People Help The People", he kinda has a little DAVID HOPKINS sound to his voice.
The second act are from Concord, North Carolina, and they are called THE AVETT BROTHERS, which consist of brothers Scott and Seth Avett, and Bob Crawford added to fill out the unit. They have a gorgeous record out called, Emotionalism, on Ramseur RecordsLabels: Cherry Ghost, The Avett Brothers
Just saw this review of FUTURE SOUNDS 28 on NY2LON today........Labels: NY2LON, TankFarm Future Sounds 28
The album, Noise Won't Stop, has been out since May in the UK (Wall Of Sound), but it was recently sent my way and I've been finding myself playing this one quite a bit. SHY CHILD are from New York and are on Say Hey Records here stateside, and their type of electronic music is built for clubs. Check out "Drop The Phone" and my favorite track, "The Volume".Labels: Shy Child
