SHOUT OUT LOUDS ARE BACK WITH VIDEO FOR "WALLS"

It feels like yesterday we enjoyed each and every note on every single song on "Our Ill Wills", the last release from Sweden's SHOUT OUT LOUDS. We were fortunate enough to have the band headline our first Future Sounds Tour of the US at the tail end of 2007 and now they've returned with "Walls" the first single off their soon to be released album, "Work" on Merge Records. It's been an amazing tour since we all jumped onto the bus in Los Angeles after the Detour Festival in early October, and it's come full circle now with a return back to the MUSIC BOX @ FONDA in Hollywood tonight. Besides being incredible live bands, both Swedish bands happen to also be some of the nicest people I've ever met. Opening act, NICO VEGA, also showed impressive personality throughout on their first nationwide tour, playing to new faces every night and winning crowds over each time. I always get sentimental about the end of a tour, as it represents a moment in time, captures artists playing a certain set of music, around a particular release, that will never be repeated in this manner ever again. We've had nothing but a great time getting to know the bands, their management, their labels, and their PR teams and I think tonight's finale should reflect what a great time we all had.

Not sure if you've seen the video for their track, "Impossible", directed by Ted Malmros (SOL bassist), who has also won a Swedish Grammy for his video for PETER, BJORN & JOHN'S "Young Folks".

TONIGHT IN NYC: TANKFARM FUTURE SOUNDS PRESENTS SHOUT OUT LOUDS

TANKFARM FUTURE SOUNDS TOUR WEEK ONE

Every good road trip has some bumps along the way, but getting the Shout Out Louds Tour started from Los Angeles began with a full-fledged fall. Just north of the famed COWswitchz along Highway 5, and just south of Bakersfield, the tour bus broke down for seven hours. Finally it was up and running again but as we rolled into the city with the biggest hills in the US – San Francisco a concern developed over the ability to use the brakes. The white-knuckled joy ride down Fell Street with two minutes left on the air brakes provided the adrenaline that fueled the night’s performance at the Independent.

The tour opener was a stuffed house, with Nico Vega taking the stage first and winning over the crowd with their inspired performance. Swedish newcomer, Johnossi then delivered their audio assault to an impressed crowd, while Popscene’s DJ Omar dropped songs throughout the night in preparation for Shout Out Louds, who let out their frustrations on the day on a set that was brilliant. It was only cooled off by the downpour of rain on the way to the after party at the Poleng Lounge with DJ UFO. At midnight we all celebrated the release day for Johnossi’s self-titled release on The Control Group with campaign before climbing back on board the war bus. We were told it was “fixed”.

Then we woke up outside of Vacaville, CA, on the side of the road and spent the next 12 hours entertaining 6-8 mechanics, tow trucks, Burger Kings and a whole lotta nothing. All told, the bus broke down an additional three times over the course of the day, causing SOL’s and Johnossi to have to cancel their performances in Eugene that evening. Former Eugene residents Nico Vega still played the show and carried the weight for everyone. Back with the Swedish brigade, we ended up splitting up into two SUV’s with the trailer and drove all night to make Portland on Thursday in a Suburban whose floorboard was warmer than Satan’s forehead. 14 people in two cars is like trying to fit an elephant in a Volkswagen.

Once there, Johnossi paid a visit to Lizard Lounge for drinks and a CD signing before all three acts played Babeti’s Pan.

A new bus arrived by 3am and life on the tour returned to normal as we headed up through customs in Canada for Richard’s on Richards in Vancouver.

2. JOHNOSSI – MAN MUST DANCE
Supporting fellow Swedes SHOUT OUT LOUDS on this cross-country journey is an incredible dynamo of a two-piece, JOHNOSSI. They’ve been making plenty of fans in Europe on the V2 Records release, and finally we get it stateside. It’s amazing how much good noise two people can make.

3. WHITE DENIM – MESS YOUR HAIR
I’ve mentioned this band, WHITE DENIM on past FS comps, but this band from Austin, Texas has got to be the hottest unsigned band North of the Rio Grande. We’re talking bad and nationwide in a ZZ TOP kinda way. Play this one loud and put some gel in your hair. The band who’s shows are a ‘who’s who’ of Texas bands each time they play – raw power! Back-to-back bands from Austin, Texas?? What is this? Lots of great acts are coming out of the capital city these days. Self-releasing ‘A City Just As Tall’ on Autobus Records on October 16th, it was actually tough to pick just one track to feature on Future Sounds from them. ‘Mrs. Virginia’ was crafted in an un-air-conditioned bedroom in the hot Austin summertime by Mr. Brazo, Martin Crane. Needs: Management, ooking, Legal.

5. CALVIN HARRIS – THE GIRLS
From Dumfries, Scotland, yeah, I know, don’t know it either, comes CALVIN HARRIS, a guy that’s already gone Top 10 in the UK with this song, and linked up with the golden ears at Almost Gold for release of ‘I Created Disco’, which it feels like he may have had a hand in doing. 6. SUGAR & GOLD – NEIGHBORHOOD
I mentioned SUGAR & GOLD on FS29, and got my hands on the track for this one for you to enjoy. San Francisco’s good time machine that makes me feel like I did at my old roller-skating parties at USA Roller Rink in middle school. Just finished a US tour with GRAVY TRAIN!!! If Calvin Harris created disco, Sugar & Gold created roller disco.

7. THE NOISES 10 – X’S ON YOUR EYES
Charlotte, North Carolina’s THE NOISES 10 are no strangers to Future Sounds past, and this marks their third appearance with newly cut tracks like ‘X’s On Your Eyes’ and no less than two others ready to walk right onto radio instantly. They’ve been out in LA working with producer Eric Valentine of the full length and were recently voted ‘Best Overall Artist’ in the Carolinas at the 2007 Charlotte Music Awards. 8. AUSHUA – SISTER SAVES
Another Orange County, California band emerges and this time they’re called AUSHUA. Already getting mentions in the Buzz Bands column in the LA Times and all over the Socal blog scene, it’s really just a matter of this band getting on the road before everyone is talking about them. This one booms at you and I warn you will stick in your head after several plays to the point of obsession. Manager: Brett Williams, New Noise Mgmt. Legal: David Rappaport. 9. THE BLACKS – ELEGANT WALK
Dirty, twisted, and looking for good trouble are the bi-coastal act THE BLACKS (San Francisco and New York). Lots of travel, twice the rock! Another strong release by my new favorite SF indie label, Tricycle Records, this three-piece is starting to make trips outside the bay to places like NYC for shows and coming away with new fans.

10. NATHAN & STEPHEN – GOING HOME
You think I tried to slip you another HOLD STEADY track, didn’t you? Might have a familiar tone, but this act is from Denver, Colorado instead of Brooklyn, it’s NATHAN & STEPHEN and they give us this super catchy song, complete with HERB ALPERT horns and a sing along to close out and make everyone feel good. The band features former members of FIVE IRON FRENZY and ROPER. Needs: Management, legal, booking, publishing.

11. LYKKE LI – LITTLE BIT Ok, slowing it down for you on this one and getting a little sexy. Here’s LYKKE LI, who will complete her debut album recordings in New York during October/November with producer Bjorn Yttling of PETER, BJORN & JOHN, and will also work in some NYC shows while she’s there. She self-released this record at home in Sweden on LL Recordings, but this is wide open for the rest of the world as her lyrics suggest.

12. SHANNON WRIGHT – EVERYBODY’S GOT THEIR OWN PART TO PLAY
Atlanta-based artist, SHANNON WRIGHT, is another artist that has been around the block, has tasted the dirty parts of the music industry and still dusts herself off and makes incredible music. Formerly in the band, CROWSDELL, she’s recorded with Steve Albini, toured with CALEXICO and her latest release, Let In The Light, features this voice that’s long overdue for additional attention.

13. CASTLEDOOR – DOVE
Los Angeles act, CASTLEDOOR, have industry eyes upon them and a stockpile of great tracks like ‘Dove’ in their kingdom. They are in the process of recording their debut full length with Aaron Espinoza (EARLIMART) this fall. A buzz band you’ll hear plenty about. Manager: Lisa Klipsic, Don’t Jump! Management.

14. THE MINUTES - UKRAINE
Dublin, Ireland’s THE MINUTES write the kind of power-pop hits that harkens back to CHEAP TRICK or more recently SNOW PATROL. The band rises from the ashes of former Future Sounds favorites, STARS OF THE CITY, and now handle their craft with a professionalism and dedication that most bands could learn from. They are about to hit the road with THE PIDGEON DETECTIVES in October and will be touring in the UK through Christmas. Management: Brian Bradely, Brassneck Management. 15. MAKE MODEL – THE L.S.B.
Called Scotland’s BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, Glasgow’s MAKE MODEL’s ‘The L.S.B.’ shouts at you to get your attention and hits the mark. The six-piece has done a session on Steve Lamacq’s Radio 1 show & recently played the Levi’s ‘Ones To Watch’ tour. This release is on their own label, The Biz, but they’ve signed to EMI so expect the full hype job soon enough. Management: Angus Murray. UK Booking: Mike, ITB. Legal: N Stein, Clintons. An indie band that sounds like the CURE from Jacksonville, Florida? You’d be correct, and here’s BLACK KIDS, a band making us feel better since THE CURE canceled their US tour dates. For fans of THE GO! TEAM and ARCADE FIRE.

Manchester’s latest buzz act seem to be all over the NME and getting plenty of traction on the street level, looks like it may have legs to last. They just did UK dates with THE CORAL.

High energy at times, melodic and moody the next, Nebraska’s EAGLE SEAGULL give a complete flight on their ‘The Year Of The How-To Book’ release. Paper Garden Records.

TANKFARM FUTURE SOUNDS PRESENTS SHOUT OUT LOUDS NA TOUR

You may have just read the PITCHFORK exclusive on the SHOUT OUT LOUDS North American Tour in October, but what it didn't mention was that we here at TANKFARM FUTURE SOUNDS are supporting the bands. It's an honor, and a long time coming for a band we've loved since February 2004. Some of you old time subscribers will remember them from when we had them on Future Sounds 10 - here's the original write up:

5. SHOUT OUT LOUDS – Please Please Please
Stockholm’s SHOUT OUT LOUDS grabbed me the instant I heard them. At first I was thinking it was a rip of MATERIAL ISSUE’s ‘Valerie Loves Me’, but after spinning the whole disc I realized that these guys are a touch of everything. Now if Parasol can just get the word out about this band we’ll never hear the end of them. Another band that has an enormous outlook ahead!

So fast forward from Bud Fox in Sweden, to Capitol Records, and now to their amazing new release on Merge Records, called 'Out Ill Wills', and it's enough to bring a tear to your eye. They've always managed to keep something quirky and clever to their lyrics and music, borrowing from THE CURE at times but having this SHINS type of warmth to them. They keep growing and maturing right before our eyes. We couldn't be more excited about getting behind them on their return. They also represent a growing trend within the industry for bands that were once a part of the big machine, the major label, and found it somewhere that didn't tap their essence, deciding instead to plug them into the formula and see what sticks. It's absolute justice that they've rebounded perfectly into Merge, one of the premier big indies that release after release, seem to have the magic potion. That secret sauce is what you and I might call 'taste', and responsible spending. So everyone's been enjoying the first single, "Tonight I Have To Leave It" for some time, but wait until you get your hands on the full length, scheduled for a September 11th release date, where tracks like "South America" and "Hard Rain" fill out this excellent album.

What's more is that the tour has two other 'future stars' on it in JOHNOSSI and NICO VEGA. JOHNOSSI are also from Stockholm, Sweden, and this two-piece is on V2 in Europe and will be releasing their US debut - self-titled - on Control Group on October 9th. Los Angeles based NICO VEGA have recently signed with Myspace Records, and will kick each night off with high energy, flips and the shortest shorts you've ever seen. Since being handed the song, "Gravity", I've been driving around town being 'that guy' in traffic, pumping his fists, pounding on the dash, and making you wonder, "what the hell is that guy listening to that is that good?" Frontwoman Aja Volkman is a sheer presence to be dealt with and felt. Again, we're just happy to be a part of giving these young and very talented artists an extra push.

TONIGHT IN LA: SHOUT OUT LOUDS @ THE EL REY

I've loved the Swedish band, SHOUT OUT LOUDS for years and years, even before they signed up with Capitol over here in the US. When Capitol did their big house cleaning a few months back, many great bands were dropped, the SOL's were one of them. The good news is that they are now in much greener pastures at Merge Records, and have a new album set to drop this fall. They are in town tonight at the El Rey - Doors @ 8pm | $15.00. If you've heard the first single, "Tonight I Have To Leave It" in all it's CURE-tastic glory, it should give you an indication on how strong the new record will be.
