THE AVETT BROTHERS SIGN TO COLUMBIA RECORDS

These days when I hear a band I love was signed by a major label I'm not sure whether or not to congratulate them or start the stopwatch. In this case, I'm betting on the big show, and I will send a mazel tov out to THE AVETT BROTHERS for their jump up to Columbia Records. Apparently the old Buddha, Rick Rubin, was moved by these kids' brilliance (didn't he also work with The Jayhawks?) and their amazing live show. Couldn't happen to a nicer crew of guys!

FUTURE SOUNDS UPDATES

THAO NGUYEN (FS25) has signed a deal with Kill Rock Stars for her second full length, We Brave Be Stings and All. She's about to do some East coast dates with her band, THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN in November, where you can hear the new tracks from this release due out on January 29th. To hear one song first, you can listen to 'Bag Of Hammers' on SWEET SOUNDS.

THE AVETT BROTHERS won the best 'New and Emerging Artist' and 'Duo/Group of the Year' awards last night at the Americana Music Awards. Congratulations!

FILM SCHOOL is at DAYTROTTER for a session today. They played 2 amazing shows in Chicago, check out this great review on FARONHEIT. They also got a 7 out of 10 album review in NME.

The SHOUT OUT LOUDS tour (presented by TankFarm Future Sounds) rolls into Austin tonight at THE PARRISH. Get ready Los Angeles, the Music Box @ Fonda show is on Monday. We have some amazing DJ's lined up, like Darren Revell of INDIE 103.1 FM, DJ Myles Hendrick of BLOODCAT LOVE, and DAISY O and one surprise special guest DJ. So people are finally catching up in the US to the very talented SCOTT MATTHEWS and his track 'Elusive' which we featured on FS25 in December. YAHOO'S WHO'S NEXT now is running the song in their 'Users Choice" contest.

NEW SOUNDS: CHERRY GHOST & THE AVETT BROTHERS

Just catching up after doing some traveling, but while I was away I enjoyed some long plane flights with a couple of acts that I've only recently discovered. The first is the Manchester, England group, CHERRY GHOST. Their song '4AM' is the kind of tune that JIMMY WEB would've written, very breezy country that reminds me of my favorite MOBY GRAPE song, "8:05". They are turning into a big deal in the UK, playing all the summer festivals, and they are on Heavenly Records, but so far it hasn't caught on here in the States. Another track is "People Help The People", he kinda has a little DAVID HOPKINS sound to his voice.

The second act are from Concord, North Carolina, and they are called THE AVETT BROTHERS, which consist of brothers Scott and Seth Avett, and Bob Crawford added to fill out the unit. They have a gorgeous record out called, Emotionalism, on Ramseur Records
Check out songs like 'Shame' or 'The Weight Of Lies' or the GRAM PARSONS like 'Salina' - they have something so American to them, like mixing O' Brother Where Art Thou with some FRED NEIL and moments of CLEM SNIDE. Looks like they are out on the road in California right now with LANGHORN SLIM, before doing their own dates straight through November without stopping.
