LIVE LETDOWNS

Don't you hate it when you get your hopes set high about some band, only to see it live and have everything your imagination had created simply shattered? Mine happened last night with BEACH HOUSE. I absolutely LOVE their music, but the live show was weak. Smoke and mirrors. Heavy on the effects, nothing magical. It goes to show that making an amazing album in your home studio Pro Tools rig is both a good and bad thing. The musicianship of Beach House was at a very low level. I guess it's not their fault, they are just a young band getting attention, and their abilities are what they are, but after listening to that cd and hearing all that swirling beauty, I thought I was about to witness something special. So driving over to the Echo I braced for either lightning in a bottle, or what could be a letdown. Victoria Legrand definately has something, a presence in there, but it's still too shy. The vocals are there no doubt. I was more dissapointed in her partner in crime, Alex Scally, who seemed to be out of time often and uninspired.

The previous night I had hoped to see something equally as unique in the Australians known as THE DEVASTATIONS. They could at least really play their instruments, but I was hoping to get a snapshot at something dark and twisted from down under, like redneck David Lynch music. Instead, it was a bunch of nice guys dropping lyrics like, "My mother, she was a whore/ my father I barely knew/he said hold on" and it didn't register as authentic. They were a good band, but there are a lot of good bands in the world. It's a tough business to be in that's for sure, and it's tough to make a living off of 'good', or even 'great'. Overall I'm just bummed that I had two chances of possibly seeing some kind of personalities, something that builds fantasy - at least in my own mind, but instead I saw some working class acts performing their songs rather than living them.

BEACH HOUSE IN LOS ANGELES TONIGHT - THE ECHO

I've been talking to everyone I know about this magical band, and tonight is my first chance to see what is 'BEACH HOUSE' live, when they play at THE ECHO in Echo Park. I like these publicity photos for the band, because it kinda captures the feeling that you get listening to their cd. Very much in the BROADCAST camp of sound and imagery, it also has this WICKER MAN type of creepiness, and I mean that only in the best possible way.

Download 'Auburn & Ivory' off of THE YELLOW STEREO to get an idea of what you're in for.

Here are the show details:

THE DEVESTATIONS TONIGHT @ SPACELAND

TONIGHT @ SPACELAND: THE DEVASTATIONS
Indie 103 presents CLUB NME with The Devastations, Airborne Toxic Event + DJ's
9PM $10

Not sure if you've heard these guys yet, but they are a new band from Australia signed to Beggars Banquet. They sound like a cross between THE NATIONAL and the TINDERSTICKS, with a mix of NICK CAVE, SCOTT WALKER and LEONARD COHEN. So it's kinda dark, exactly. They've had a wild tour of the US and Canada thus far, closing in on the final two shows. The headliner for the tour backed out, causing them to cancel some dates. Their new album, Coal, was released on Brassland on October 24th in the US, and Beggars Banquet in the UK and beyond.

Film School: five songs into new album

PUDDLEGUM ran this update on FILM SCHOOL this morning...............

Film School is five songs into their next album. The band is self-producing the album in their home city of San Francisco and L.A. The band's management, From The Future, told Puddlegum to "expect something lush and dreamy, but still very Film School." The album will be released in early 2007 on Beggars, but no release date has been set yet.

On August 15, Film School released 11:11 single from their self-titled LP along with a new song Walk Until Sunday that gives hints of where the band is heading musically. The single was first released and targeted in the UK through Beggars before being released on iTunes in the US.

As Puddlegum reported, On and On will be featured on the soundtrack of a film called You Are Here. The movie was written and directed by Henry Pincus, and produced by Paul Schiff (Mona Lisa Smile, Rushmore). The soundtrack also features Bloc Party and The Rapture.

LA ROCCA'S VAN/GEAR STOLEN IN PHILADELPHIA

Damn! What's wrong with the City of Brotherly Love? It's almost monthly that some bands gets their stuff stolen in Philadelphia. This time, it's LA ROCCA. There can't be a worse feeling for a band than being out on the road, in the middle of the tour, sleeping in the Travelodge, and having all of your gear stolen. It's not about having insurance on it, it's about that violation to your possessions that you've worked hard to assemble, customize, and get just right. So you miss some shows, it's the pedals, the samples (if you use them), the old case with the stickers on it from your old bands. Having lived through it before with FILM SCHOOL in Philly, I want to help bring awareness to what has happened to LA ROCCA and direct anyone that wants to help to the band's management:
