TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: CHIEF + GROUPLOVE @ THE TROUBADOUR

Tonight @ The Troubadour is a show filled with bands we adore - CHIEF headlines and newcomer, GROUPLOVE, opens up. HAIM is in the middle slot and everyone seems to love them as well. Chief has signed with Domino Recordings and their first two singles, "Night & Day" and "Breaking Walls" sound brilliant. They jumped on The Rumble: Los Angeles last August and delivered an evening of amazing harmonies.

It seemed like over the course of two days, we got hit by GROUPLOVE from three different angles, all from sources we trust, about this LA based act. We then got a copy (thanks Kimi) of their EP, and the lead single, "Colours" is an indie hit if we've ever heard one. Now it will be our mission to get them to play our Rumble party, but this is a band that needs to be on everyone's radar.

THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO roars into North Park tonight for the June edition @ Bar Pink with three amazing acts, a guest DJ, Trumer Pils beer specials all night and free admission - if you can get in.

Headlining the bill is the lovely, MAREN PARUSEL. Formerly of the all-girl punk band, Wild Weekend, Parusel's new keyboard based pop sound has gotten her attention. She received a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards and during her recent stint at SXSW, she caught the ear of the infamous, Kim Fowley (producer of The Runaways). Check out her song "Dear Love" available on 7" via Single Screen Records.

Rolling in for night #5 of their 6 night run of Rumbles it's LA's CHASING KINGS. They've been debuting a number of new songs all week long and these new directions are all impressive. They even have a new Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers sounding track and a new whale tattoo that they picked up in Portland. Their LA set was commanding, definitely a band in full tour mode with their chops as tight as possible.

Opening the night are DRUG WARS. Called "the best kind of post-hardcore-punk-rock to listen to" by 7 Inches blog, this four piece are gathering buzz even across the pond with Collective Zine UK taking notice of their 7 inch 9846 (Grizzly Records).

Plus, a DJ set by METH COMBZ (pka Seth Combs of SD City Beat).

The June edition of THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES takes place this evening at 3 Clubs in Hollywood and features 3 local bands with bright futures, a special guest DJ and free admission.

CHASING KINGS are bringing it home tonight and we can't wait to see them tear up the backroom of 3 Clubs. Sincere key-laden indie pop at its finest, CHASING KINGS excel in crafting classic melodies coupled with memorable hooks. From what we've been hearing their gathering new fans along the tour this week and must be caught before they blow up at the Also I Like to Rock summer series at The Hammer Museum next month.This quartet are now bondafide members of the FS family and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Filling the middle slot, we're stoked to have GAMBLE HOUSE, Grizzly Bear esque rockers that have been attracted major attention in LA, even nabbing a spot at Aquarium Drunkard's Waved Out Fest earlier this Spring. This LA based band has delivered an album so deep and rich it feels like an old friend. Check out the gorgeous track, "Bonny Doon!"

Rounding out the bill, we have Inland Empire based trio, FRANCISCO THE MAN! Fresh off their spot at The Silverlake Jubilee and the release of their their new five-song EP, "With Friends Like You," they are a must see! We can't get enough of their newest track,"Do You Remember."

On the turntables is a man with some golden ears - DJ GOLDEN SUGAR BEAR. He's tipped us off on more great bands than anyone over the years and he'll be holding things down on the decks as well as broadcasting live on his pirate radio station. SAN FRANCISCO RUMBLES @ MILK TONIGHT ON HAIGHT STREET

THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO happens tonight @ Milk on Haight Street, across from Amoeba Music, and once again we're serving up three up-and-comers, DJ's, Trumer Pils beer specials and even a happy hour show.

Headlining the evening will be a band with a name that reflects the artistic past of San Francisco Beats and beyond - CITY LIGHT. City Light are Postal Service and Aqueduct-esque electro rockers and Noise Pop favorites. Their release Burned Out Bright (Banter Media) is full of bright yet distorted electronic soundscapes like "Someday Maybe" and has already caught the attention of out friends over at The Bay Bridged.

In the middle slot of the evening is the SF act that we owe a huge thanks to THE DOWNER PARTY for stepping in last minute. The four piece have been buzzing in the bay area for a while, with classic uptempo rock combined with sugary lead vocals courtesy of Sierra Frost. THE DOWNER PARTY are snotty punk rock with sharp lyrics and guitar hooks.

Opening up is a band I urge you to see. Seattle and Portland are still chattering about their performances on Monday and Tuesday, but LA's CHASING KINGS are the kind of band you see once, and you'll make a point of seeing them every time they are in town. Some compare the vocal stylings to everyone from Elvis Costello to Squeeze but we strongly recommend you getting there early enough to see this band, so you can say you say them way back when playing Milk.

Resident DJ, BAGEL TED (Bagel Radio) will be there spinning throughout the night and there will be TRUMER PILS beer specials all night long as well. Be sure to get to Milk early that night for the Milk Happy Hour show that is being headlined by another up-and-comer > CASH PONY.

THE RUMBLE: PORTLAND pulls into Holocene this evening for this month's edition featuring two locals and the touring band - Chasing Kings. Our Portland friends - Pampelmoose, Music Millennium and Cravedog are the local hosts and the party is FREE.

Headlining the party is BLOOD BEACH, a haunting shoegazy lo-fi outfit originally from Texas, calling Portland home and recently opened for Smith Westerns at Backspace. Velvet Underground combined with heavy distortion.

"Blood Beach is the weirdest. It is the new band from Tex Winters. It is folk music with psychedelic freak outs." - Crappy Indie Music

Rolling in for night #2 of their 6 night run of Rumbles it's LA's CHASING KINGS. Without offending dozens of other 'nice' bands I've known over the years, these guys could actually be the nicest crew we've met. Singer Matt Schwartz posses that something extra, the kind of spark and God-given talent that only comes around once in awhile, and he could evolve into someone on the Chris Martin level - he's that good. Portland, support your locals but this is one out-of-towner we urge you to see.

Opening up are guys that we've quickly called 'friends' - PRIORY - a PDX four-piece calling themselves spacious folk rockers with touches of classic rock and soul with their debut scheduled to come out in June. Track “Devil vs. Heater” is sprawling number peppered with three part a cappella harmonies. Few bands have worked as hard as spreading the word, so if you already knew about tonight's party, you probably heard it from these boys. They have an EP that's just released and should be sitting on the counter of MUSIC MILLENNIUM for an easy pick-up (thanks Terry!).

Not only is the party FREE, but with TRUMER PILS beer specials all night, THE RUMBLE PDX easily trumps Taco Tuesday.

CAUGHT LIVE: VOICEsVOICEs / SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS

LA’s VOICEsVOICEs album covers may be a bit deceiving. Day-glo easter-egg colored galaxies, morphed-up animals and rainbows adorn the covers of this female duo’s two EP releases. Opening for New York’s School of Seven Bells last week at The Echo, their hypnotic blend of droning, almost tribal atmospheric haze is by no means even the least bit garish, as the aforementioned artwork may suggest. The duo Nico Turner and Jenean Farris, originally both drummers, swirl through post-rock receptivity, dooming drone and a lush old-world rapture that makes me truly feel that they are one of LA’s most promising and enveloping sonic surprises.

New York threesome—in their press photos, quartet live— School of Seven Bells drew a sizable, elbow-rubbing crowd to the small Echo last Wednesday. Their acclaimed debut Aplinisms (Ghostly) from 2008 is still a firm example of the electro-tinged, shoegaze-soaked dreampop that still permeates the blogosphere these days. Led by identical twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (of On! Air! Library! if you remember), backed by guitarist Benjamin Curtis (formerly of The Secret Machines) and a live drummer, the band’s slow-growing and stirring sound seemed a bit idle once in a live setting. It was at times difficult to pick standouts from fillers as the overall set, still pensive and well-played, appeared to somewhat meld into itself as time elapsed. It very well could’ve just been an off night for the New York act as time has shown their material (Alpinisms is still a great listen) is very much worth your time.

The band’s latest single, “ Windstorm,” the lively opener from LP two, Disconnect From Desire (out July 13th via Vagrant/Ghostly) is available now and features a B-side and remix from A Place to Bury Strangers.

Start your week off with some music tonight as THE RUMBLE: SEATTLE returns to the comfy confines of the Havana Social Club in Capitol Hill.

This monthly indie rock night is FREE and highlights up-and-coming bands and is backed by the dream team of Seattle music supporters > The Stranger, Line Out, The Wig, Easy Street Records, Sound On The Sound and Trumer Pils.

This month we have a great 1-2 punch for you: MOTOPONY & CHASING KINGS.

Headlining the party is a band from Tacoma known as Motopony. Led by Daniel Blue, MOTOPONY are being compared to Broken Social Scene and Wilco. KEXP’s Richard Johnson has already jumped on this one, featuring “Seer” in his Song of the Day Podcast and recording a live session with the band back in January. We first heard them on John Richard's morning show and quickly became fans.

If you’ve been reading the Future Sounds blog at all over the past 6 months, you’re more than aware of our devotion to CHASING KINGS, so much so that we’ve tapped them to headline the West Coast leg of THE RUMBLE JUNE. Named one of the Top 20 Indie Bands in LA by The Deli Magazine, they’ve already shared the stage with Sea Wolf and conquered SXSW, where they played our parties as well as the Levi’s/Fader Fort. Comprised of four childhood friends, Matt Schwartz, Drew Beck, Mike Goldman and Nick Sandler, CHASING KINGS ooze a genuine enthusiasm for playing and crafting memorable melodies and harmonies that transcend whatever musical trend is penetrating the industry with The Pop Stereo calling them a “soaring breath of fresh air.” Schwartz continues to draw comparisons to Elvis Costello and Britt Daniel with vocal and key skills well beyond his years, especially on “Dark Sunglasses.”

At the tender young age of 19, Georgia Mason recently broke out of University and the ACM Gospel Choir to make music on her own. She's been teaming up with some heavy-hitting songwriters that have written for Dido, Corinne Bailey, Amy Winehouse and even Michael Jackson. We got this first track, "Million Miles" early, and the other two demos are also promising. "Million Miles" instantly sounds like that hit song that's playing in your Starbucks this morning.

Even if the UK pop-space is crowded with the Duffy's & Adele's, this squeaky clean little lady has something fresh and innocent about her. The demo for "Lights Go Down" has a Jackson 5 meets Little Jackie's "The Stoop" vibe.

Tonight's Echoplex performance by Austin's VOXTROT is bittersweet. Sad because it's their “Goodbye, Cruel World” farewell tour. Happy because they are a great band of stellar people and they are playing Los Angeles tonight with recent Rumble Tour road dogs - THE FEROCIOUS FEW, WE BARBARIANS and THE BLACK.
It seems like yesterday, or February of 2006, that we fell for the track, "The Start Of Something", added it to Future Sounds 23, and the song really did being the start of something for the band. I compared them to The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian and The Housemartins at the time, but they quickly forged their own identity. Get out tonight and say goodbye.

NEW SOUNDS: JBM "NOT EVEN IN JULY"

Jesse Marchant is someone with a buttery tongue. Known as JBM to the music community, we recently were turned onto his music, and specifically the honey-of-a-song called "Ambitions & War" off his soon to be released album on July 27th (Partisan Records), "Not Even In July". "Ambitions & War" is like BREAD meets AMERICA, and it's a song my wife plays about 5 times a day about someone that's losing their mind. It's brilliant and I'm told it's about life in Los Angeles, which makes sense about losing your mind. The record is an acoustic jewel, my Sunday morning-cookin' breakfast type of jam.

Next week he'll be hitting the road with another one of our favorites - NATHANIEL RATELIFF for dates up in the Northeast and anyone catching this double team is in for a blessed evening. He recently hit the road with Rougue Wave & Avi Buffalo and Sondre Lerche.

Brooklyn buzz band - KEEPAWAY - are out on the west side for everyone to get a glimpse and play tonight at the AT1 ART PROJECTS space with LUCKY DRAGONS and a bunch of visual artists. Because you may not know them and feel the need to categorize them to determine if it's worth your time spent, then think ANIMAL COLLECTIVE meets THE AVALANCHES. The band recently dropped their EP, Baby Style on Lefse Records. Event goes down in Eagle Rock this evening and the music performances go from 8pm-10pm (FREE)!

LA’S CHASING KINGS TO HOLD COURT ON JUNE RUMBLE TOUR

If you’ve been reading this blog at all over the past 6 months, you’re more than aware of our devotion to CHASING KINGS, so much so that we’ve tapped them to headline the West Coast leg of THE RUMBLE JUNE.

Named one of the Top 20 Indie Bands in LA by The Deli Magazine, they’ve already shared the stage with Sea Wolf, conquered SXSW, where they played our parties as well as the Levi’s/Fader Fort and have already snagged a spot up at the upcoming Also I Like To Rock summer series at The Hammer Museum. Comprised of four childhood friends, Matt Schwartz, Drew Beck, Mike Goldman and Nick Sandler, CHASING KINGS ooze a genuine enthusiasm for playing and crafting memorable melodies and harmonies that transcend whatever musical trend is penetrating the industry with The Pop Stereo calling them a “soaring breath of fresh air.”

Schwartz continues to draw comparisons to Elvis Costello and Britt Daniel with vocal and key skills well beyond his years, especially on “Dark Sunglasses.” Attracting the attention of bloggers and industry heavyweights including Tony Berg, who produced their six-song debut EP The Current State of Our Future last summer, Chasing Kings are on to something with their infectious piano laden indie pop. We can’t say it enough, they are a must see.

Kicking it off at THE RUMBLE SEATTLE at Havana Social Club on Monday June 7th, CHASING KINGS will be joined by Tacoma’s MOTOPONY. Led by Daniel Blue MOTOPONY are being compared to Broken Social Scene and Wilco. KEXP’s Richard Johnson has already jumped on this one, featuring “Seer” in his Song of the Day Podcast and recording a live session with the band back in January. TRUMER PILS specials all night!

Tuesday June 8th, CHASING KINGS will head down to Holocene for THE RUMBLE PORTLAND to play with PRIORY and BLOOD BEACH. PRIORY is a PDX four-piece calling themselves spacious folk rockers with touches of classic rock and soul with their debut scheduled to come out in June. Track “Devil vs. Heater” is sprawling number peppered with three part acappella harmonies.
BLOOD BEACH is a haunting shoegazy lo-fi outfit originally from Texas, calling Portland home and recently opened for Smith Westerns at Backspace. Velvet Underground combined with heavy distortion, BLOOD BEACH are right on point with lo-fi psych rock trend. With TRUMER PILS specials all night, THE RUMBLE PDX easily trumps Taco Tuesday.

On Wednesday June 9th we’ll head down to Milk for THE RUMBLE SF, where LEOPOLD & HIS FICTION and CITY LIGHT will share the bill with CHASING KINGS. Local trio Leopold & His Fiction, an act that’s long been on our radar with their southern infused rock folk meets fuzzy blues. Led by Detroit native, Daniel James, Leopold & His Fiction are the Black Keys meets The White Stripes, but better. Their recently released single, “Golden Friends” is a piece of looming 70’s freak folk goodness. With their release, Ain’t No Surprise touted as one of the Thirty-Two Greatest San Francisco Bay Area Albums of 2009 by our friends at The Bay Bridged, LAHF are Rumble ready.

CITY LIGHT, another Bay area band are Postal Service and Aqueduct esque electro rockers and Noise Pop fav. Their release Burned Out Bright (Banter Media) is full of bright yet distorted electronic soundscapes like “Someday Maybe” and has already caught the attention of out friends over at The Bay Bridged. Resident DJ, BAGEL TED will be there spinning throughout the night. RSVP at Sonic Living.

Thursday June 10th we’ll venture to 3 Clubs for THE RUMBLE LOS ANGELES where CHASING KINGS are likely to pack the house on their home turf. Also joining us are YAWN, an experimental indie pop act from Chicago. Think shades of Animal Collective with afro beat percussion and vocals in the vein of Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koening. “Toys” is a danceworthy tribal jam off their Pitchfork certified self-released EP.

Rounding out the night are FOSTER THE PEOPLE, an LA based act being called the next MGMT (pre Congratulations). The brainchild of TV composer Mark Foster, Foster the People, are garnering major attention from NylonTV to London’s The Guardian. Their track “Pumped Up Kicks” has been branded the song of the summer by Black Book Mag and with a whistling hook that rivals Peter Bjorn & John’s “Young Folks” and The Drums “Let’s Go Surfing” it’s easy to agree. We’re already anticipating the dance party that’s about to occur in the backroom, so Foster the People are most definitely that band you’ll be glad you caught before they blow up…so don’t miss out.

Then Saturday June 12th were back in San Diego at Bar Pink, for what’s fast becoming one of the most best nights of The Rumble tour, with a constant stream of SD bands that never disappoint and June’s no different with MAREN PARUSEL and DRUG WARS sharing the bill with CHASING KINGS.

German songstress, MAREN PARUSEL’s reflective indie pop is melodic and beautifully orchestrated, especially “Dear Love” off their Dear Love/Days in Universe 7 inch (Single Screen Records). Formerly of Wild Weeked, an all female punk band, Parusel’s new keyboard based sound has been getting attention with a San Diego Music Award nomination for Best New Artist last summer and capturing the attention of Kim Fowley at SXSW this year.

Dirty, loud garage rock from SD best describe, DRUG WARS round out the night. Called “the best kind of post-hardcore-punk-rock to listen to” by 7 Inches, this four piece are gathering buzz even across the pond with Collective Zine UK taking notice of their 7 inch 9846 (Grizzly Records).

CAUGHT LIVE: A B & THE SEA @ THE VIPER ROOM - 5-16-10

Summer is upon us, and sunset laden beach filled days beckon. Enter A B & THE SEA, an SF (by way of Wisconsin) who wowed The Viper Room last night with set of frothy indie pop confections guaranteed to populate your summer playlist.

Fresh off their opening slot at the Noise Pop Closing Party in February and an endorsement from The Morning Benders’ Chris Chu (he produced their demos), A B & the Sea are riding high on fair amount of surf rock buzz, so I was excited to see what they had to offer.

A B & the Sea feel as if they could be transplanted in to the sock hop of any episode of Happy Days, with tinges of Buddy Holly and the Beatles. Channeling a young Brian Wilson minus those awful Hawaiian shirts, lead singer, Koley O’Brien, clad in a pale blue blazer and greased up hair is a 1950’s esque heartthrob in the making.

Opening with “Suzie,” the track that first got me hooked on this four piece last summer when they played The Rumble parties in Portland and San Francisco. “Yellow-Haired Girl” was a bright morsel of sunshiny dreamy pop goodness heavy on the “sha la la’s,” while “Down Around” off their soon to be released EP, was a retro surf pop with a contemporary edge and pure nostalgia in the best way possible. Full of three part harmonies and a tight rhythm section thanks to the skills of Troy Lawton, they surprised the crowd with an apt cover of the Beach Boys “Don’t Worry Baby.”

A B & the Sea excel in crafting sincere catchy pop gems that demand foot tapping and hand clapping, so much so that I challenge anyone to resist the urge to not cut a move at one of their shows. Closing with current single “Bone Dry,” a thumping harmony rich number that elicited a roving dance party in front of the stage courtesy of O’Brien’s proud mom. A B & the Sea are undoubtedly the Beach Boys of 2010 and once again prove that Chris Chu has absolutely impeccable taste.

THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO is proud to receive another San Diego indie heavyweight into our collective - OWL AND BEAR - a San Diego music blog that we've been reading for some time that time and time again seems to be tracking bands that are also close to our hearts. We all know that San Diego right now is producing some of the freshest new bands in the country. Tristan and his team have an excellent O&B Podcast, as well as interviews, reviews, videos and write-ups on shows happening in San Diego. Owl & Bear joins SDdialed In as our blogger component of the Rumble SD team, which also is comprised of our soul-sista's Indigenous Promotions, M-Theory Records, SD CityBeat and Trumer Pils.

It's no secret that Future Sounds loves the San Diego trio, APES OF WRATH. One of the first single releases on Future Sounds Records was the song that this video was created around, "Death Train". The band has since self-released their full-length s/t album that is nothing short of brilliant. The boys will be back in LA on May 22nd at Mr T's Bowl with JACK LADDER & HOTEL ST GEORGE.

NEW RELEASES: SOLVOR VERMEER "THE BEAMING LIGHT EP"

We've been tracking this little lady from Oslo, Norway with a voice as sweet as fresh snowflakes - SOLVOR VERMEER, and thanks to Lazy Acre Records, this release exists outside of her homeland. 'The Beaming Light' will appeal to the IMOGEN HEAP fan in you, with hints of BJORK. The title track is the one for me, but Solvor has a voice that will melt you, as it did ours at By:Larm in Oslo last February. Hunt this one down.

FMLY BENEFIT FOR WELL'S BRING HOPE

Our friends over at FMLY are always up to something, whether it's a FMLY bike ride or a show on the beach, and tonight they are hosting a benefit for WELLS BRING HOPE with a slate of great bands, including STARFUCKER at the Cozy Castle. Cozy Castle is a creative space/music venue located in Mid City at 4625 Exposition Blvd.

Wells Bring Hope is committed to drilling wells to bring safe water to rural villages in Niger, West Africa. Our vision is to save lives with safe water. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, and one of many places where contaminated water kills innocent victims, most often infants and young children. There is more to this sad story. The burden of getting water falls upon women and girls, who walk back-breaking miles everyday to find and carry water back to their villages. The result? Girls are not able to go to school.

This doesn’t have to happen. Drill a well deep into the ground and lives are transformed instantly.

* Child mortality is dramatically reduced
* Girls can go to school
* Women can work productively for their families

Doors open at 8 and include performances by Starfucker, Fake Drugs, Professor Calculus, Moon Pearl and Stellaluna and the show is $5.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: MISSISSIPPI MAN & PEPPER RABBIT @ THE ECO

Two bands we've had the recent pleasure of watching perform on our RUMBLE parties in recent months - MISSISSIPPI MAN and PEPPER RABBIT play tonight at The Echo for a show put on by LA Record. The boys in Mississippi Man have all the makings of rock legends in the makings, after having a friend hustle us for money one night and the next partaking in scandalous van activities, and then stepping on stage to deliver an amazing live set. They surprised us with a much larger sound than we had anticipated and really closed out the last Rumble Los Angeles party at 3 Clubs. Pepper Rabbit of course played through the Rumble WC dates in April and forged new followers at every stop. WHITE ARROWS and THE FLING also support this bill which kicks off at 9pm.

FILM SCHOOL'S 'FISSION' IS AMAZING

Crawl back through the Future Sounds archives and you'll see a very long and intimate relationship with the band known as FILM SCHOOL. We've been family since their brilliant EP, Alwaysnever, and have watched the evolution of a band that has had entire line-up changes, vans stolen, label changes and various directions in sound. In the end the theme continues, which is one of constant forward motion, constantly redefining their goals and a band mature enough after 10 years to not chase the tail or do what's expected. After all, they could've rested on their coattails of the nu-gaze movement which they helped pave the road for this new pack that everyone loves that is really just a watered down version of albums they've already done, but they quietly do their thing, and people eventually catch up.

So when the latest sneak copy of 'Fission' entered my grasp I shut the door to be alone with this old friend. The other thing about a Film School record is that they creep on you. Sure, there are always songs that immediately jump out at you, like "Waited" on this new record, which is a radio single if I've ever heard one, but it requires multiple plays to get past the initial sonic buzzsaw or waves of layered vocals. This record the lovely and wonderful bassist, Lorelei Plotczyk, steps forward with more vocals than ever before and the tag-team with frontman/mastermind Greg Bertens is a harmony in my head. To be honest, I'm still just processing this album, which is released on July 20th (FFO Records), but I'm already stuck on album opener - "Heart Full Of Pentagons" and first single, "When I'm Yours".

We're looking forward to seeing/hearing this record live when they start touring this summer and hope to share tracks as soon as we get clearance.

AMOEBA RECORDS JOINS THE RUMBLE SAN FRANCISCO TEAM

THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO has added yet another indie cornerstone to it's team of SF partners - AMOEBA RECORDS. The family includes The Owl Magazine, Bagel Radio, The Noise Pop Music Festival, The Bay Bridged, The San Francisco Bay Guardian and Spin Earth, which is pretty much the indie rock Mount Rushmore of the Bay area. We're all committed to helping up-and-coming bands get as much attention as possible in a time where the establishment is no longer working on developing bands.

The Amoeba store on the end of Haight Street near the entrance to Golden Gate Park is a mecca for music heads, especially in a city where the % of people that are DJ's rival any city on the planet. I think I've personally spent enough for a college education in this location, and I bet my brother is probably there right now flipping through bins.

WOVEN BONES + THE JACUZZI BOYS @ THE RUMBLE AUSTIN TONIGHT

THE RUMBLE: AUSTIN returns tonight to Beerland after taking some time off post-SXSW to recover.

Headlining the party is the amazing WOVEN BONES! Since first hearing 'If You're Gold, I'm Gone", we were hooked on their scuzzy smack.

NEW RELEASES: PANDA RIOT "FAR & NEAR"

Chicago's PANDA RIOT have finally dropped their latest effort, "Far & Near" (Mirror/Mirror) today on the eve of a Midwest and East Coast tour that starts in Athens, OH tomorrow night. We tipped them in the past, but now that the music is out and available, it's time you take them home. Fuzzy and sonic, reminding us of acts like CLUB 8, GREAT NORTHERN, SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS and FILM SCHOOL's more recent albums. Like many acts from Chicago, they show their Pumpkins roots from time to time as that shadow always seems to be present, and why not. The track that has us most excited is 'When You Said When I Said", which blends front lady Rebecca Scott's dreamy COCTEAU TWINS-like voice into a MBV haze. Other cuts like "Motown Glass" and "Julie In Time" jump out from this six song EP.

We seem to have a love affair going on with the music scene of San Diego of late, as 'those guys' down south keep cranking out bands that are doing something very interesting. One of the many strong acts, and one that just won best rock band in SD, TRANSFER, plays tonight @ The Viper Room. They go on at 10pm so all you old heads can roll over there after Idol. Transfer has been a vital part of the SD music community for some time now and they are a part of the uber cool OBSCURE MAGPIE collective.

This evening in Las Vegas at the Thunderbird Lounge in the Aruba Hotel it's THE RUMBLE: LAS VEGAS. We wind up the first leg of the Rumble run of shows (the 6th party in 7 nights) starting at 8:30pm tonight, so pull your mothers off the craps tables and over to see this FREE show that will work off the buffet you leveled.

Our traveling wilburys THE FEROCIOUS FEW and San Diego's LITTLE DEADMAN shake off the rust from last night's gig at Bar Pink in San Diego and join up with local favorite THE CLYDESDALE and DJ REX DART. Las Vegas City Life just did this nice feature on TFF that provides some insight into their 'busking lifestyle' - read it here. BAR PINK HOSTS THE RUMBLE SAN DIEGO TONIGHT!

In what's turned into one of our most exciting Rumble parties month in and month out, THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO @ Bar Pink loads up for a Saturday night filled with local talent and the wild bunch known as THE FEROCIOUS FEW.

North Park's THE KABBS headline tonight's party and are the perfect night cap to what the other two - dirty whiskey drinking/sounding bands will set up. They specialize in seedy garage rock that is right at home in a dark, dive bar. Give a listen to "Golden & Blue" (mp3)

Supporting from San Francisco it's the band on a mission from The Mission - THE FEROCIOUS FEW. Frontman Francisco Fernandez is a mix of early Bob Dylan and late Howlin' Wolf, and actually drives a hearse while writing over a dozen songs a month, most coming in under 2 minutes and all relating to tragedy, drinking, drug takin', heartbreak and near criminal behavior. Their debut release, "Juices", on Birdman Records, is appropriately titled and witnessing TFF live might make you messy.

Openers - LITTLE DEADMAN - have truly been one of our favorite new discoveries thanks to Zack/Sezio and our good buddies over at Single Screen Records, a label that can't seem to pick a bad band if they try. Their track, "Shooting Seagulls" has already been placed on a half-dozen friend playlists around the office since the mp3's hit our inbox. We fell for them hard and fast and have convinced them to continue the Rumble run onto Las Vegas tomorrow to the Aruba Hotel.

DJ Cory Casey will be on the decks all night and there will be TRUMER PILS beer specials all night long!

WOW! NATHANIEL RATELIFF'S ALBUM "IN MEMORY OF LOSS" IS BRILLIANT

I finally got my copy of the latest release by NATHANIEL RATELIFF, "In Memory Of Loss" (Rounder) and after only getting two songs in was already to fire up the 'ol blogspot and start yapping about how absolutely brilliant it is. I hope you already know of Rateliff from his other bands, BORN IN THE FLOOD and THE WHEEL. We were lucky enough to have The Wheel play our Skewer CMJ party at Pianos last year and got to spend a little time with him, only to release he's not only supremely talented, but one of those guys you just want to see win. I had already thought that he had met his quota of having one of the most beautiful songs in years with "Just For Me, But I Thought Of You" off this 'Desire and Dissolving Men' album, but he's struck lightning TWICE with this song - "Early Spring Till" (click here to download), which could very well be the most beautiful song of 2010 thus far. Track down this release if you can, it's worth your hard earned cash.

TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO: LILOFEE + THE FRAIL @ MEZZANINE

Our dear friends - THE FRAIL (FS28) - are representing San Francisco in the Ford Fiesta Mission where one band gets to play at Bonaroo this June and are playing this incredible line up tonight @ Mezzanine. Headlining are Future Sounds Records' own LILOFEE and it's also the CD release for MENEW. Topping things off is POPSCENE's AARON AXELSEN handling the DJ duties. The Frail has already gathered over 1500 RSVP's for this "movement" so let's get them to Tennessee next month.

Playing all of the RUMBLE parties along the West Coast this week (6 shows in 7 nights) is San Francisco's THE FEROCIOUS FEW, as they have released "Juices", their Birdman Records debut, and a culmination of their songwriting craft that they have worked on religiously on every street corner in San Francisco and Oakland. Known for their guerrilla sidewalk shows outside concerts and street fairs, that generally end in near arrests, the FF are a blues explosion that's part Black Keys, part Robert Johnson at the Crossroads.

Opening up the evening someone we've also started stalking recently - LA's DIRT DRESS. Thursday's party is going to be a whiskey-infused mess after these three acts drop their delta blues meets 2010 rock n roll on all of us. Dirt Dress caught our attention after we received their EP on cassette, Perdido en la Suciedad (Papermade), and we love their Velvet Underground meets The Modern Lovers vibe. Celebrate Cinco De Mayo tonight with Francisco Fernandez and THE FEROCIOUS FEW as this month's RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO celebrates the release of "Juices" on Birdman Records!

Headlining the Rumble party this month at Cafe Du Nord are the dynamic duo of THE FEROCIOUS FEW, who just dropped their debut LP on Birdman and are playing the West Coast leg of THE RUMBLE this week - 6 parties in 7 nights. The San Francisco show, being their home turf, will also double as their CD release party, so the boys should be in rare form.

Supporting them are a band we've been trying to get to play our party for ages, THE SERMON. Frontman Mike Gabriel comes off like a Southern Baptist preacher - preachin' the blues! They have just finished up a new album which has help from such heavyweights as Penelope Houston of THE AVENGERS and Mr Incredible- KELLY STOLTZ.

Coming up from Los Angeles but a band with a sound that will be right at home with these growlers is MISSISSIPPI MAN . We recently got turned onto them and their song "Hell's Oven" has us hooked.

THE RUMBLE: PORTLAND returns to Holocene TONIGHT with an incredible line up of Portland bands + a traveling act that make this FREE party something you can't miss.

First up is 1776, a band we got turned onto by our partners at CRAVEDOG, and then after listening we understand why this band was recently signed to the Dandy Warhols' label, Beat The World Records, because this band has the songs, and tonight we'll see their live chops.

The band playing through all The Rumbles is the SF based duo, THE FEROCIOUS FEW. Since first meeting frontman Francisco Fernandez (that's a lot of F's) at a Rumble SF party by the DJ booth, and FF talking the most smack I had ever heard, we've been fast friends ever since. They've graced the Rumble SF and Rumble LA in past years and played our first Hollywood BrewFest last fall. They are supporting the instant classic - 'Juices' - and it's memorable that they are all official and on a label after all these years selling thousands of CD's on the street corners out of their guitar case.

Portland Mercury darlings, MONARQUES round out the night, as this seven piece are set to bring their sunny, 1950’s inspired indie pop. We're pumped that they are playing the party this month indeed.

The first week of May promises to be FEROCIOUS musically - as San Francisco's dynamic duo known as THE FEROCIOUS FEW hit the road, starting TONIGHT, and play the West Coast leg of THE RUMBLE.

This evening @ Havana Social Club, THE RUMBLE: SEATTLE showcases a band that we got tipped off about from SOUND ON THE SOUND - THE HEAD & THE HEART. I think "Sounds Like Hallelujah" has appeared on every personal mix I've made since this discovery. This band could be the US version of MUMFORD & SONS, and we'll get to see for ourselves this evening in the intimate space of the Havana Social Club.

San Francisco's THE FEROCIOUS FEW have released "Juices", their Birdman Records debut, and a culmination of their songwriting craft that they have worked on religiously on every street corner in San Francisco and Oakland. Known for their guerrilla sidewalk shows outside concerts and street fairs, that generally end in near arrests, the FF are a blues explosion that's part Black Keys, part Robert Johnson at the Crossroads.

There will be beer specials all night long from TRUMER PILS.

Tonight, one of our brothers in arms from San Diego - Zack Nielsen of SEZIO.ORG, and his buddy Dave Brown from HOLIDAY MATINEE are supporting a SD act that needs proper national recognition - JOEL P WEST & THE TREE RING as they will perform at the Museum of Contemporary Art/San Diego.

Part of the Ford Fiesta movement, Brown and Nielson were asked to pick a San Diego artist deserving of national recognition. Nielsen said, "Joel has been a hidden gem amongst San Diego's recently buzzing music scene for the past several years. We've had the pleasure of watching Joel's music evolve from an acoustic project to a fleshed-out, string-based quartet, a.k.a. the Tree Ring." Thanks to this connection that Ford has created, West & the Tree Ring have a chance to perform at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in June.

Also performing on the bill is another band that is a FS favorite of late - BLACK MAMBA. Here's the brand new video from the band that graced our Rumble: San Diego party this month at Bar Pink.

One of those acts that broke up before the world got to realize their genius was the act formerly known as ELLE MILANO. Right as they were turning into a band we wanted to cut off a hand to see live, they dismantled the group. From those ashes comes the latest from the man known as Adam Crisp called ENTREPRENEURS. Crisp has upped his game and has added a whole electronic element to his work, and in doing so has caught the attention and the remix skills of acts like Marina and the Diamonds, Penguin Prison, The Premarital Sect, Clock Opera, MASKS and Radiant Dragon.

They are finally sharing the new goodies with everyone, and you can download a copy of the song, "Revenge Platter" here.

LIVE REVIEW FROM THE SILVERLAKE LOUNGE

Silverlake Lounge never disappoints and Tuesday night was no different, as two mainstays in the FS musical family, CHASING KINGS and ALL WRONG & THE PLANS CHANGE engaged the crowd with staggering performances, once again proving to us just why we’re fans to begin with.

We really can’t get enough of Chasing Kings, considering they blew up 3 Clubs for The Rumble in January and went with us to SXSW last month. Classic indie pop coupled with blues and 60’s and 70’s rock influences, demonstrate their deep respect for music of all genres. Matt Schwartz’s vocals and skills on the keys venture into Costello territory in the best way possible. With tracks like “Dark Sunglasses” and “Empathy,” their music is a pleasant and a fortifying change from the lo-fi world currently enveloping the industry.

Echoing the title of their EP and track, “The Current State of Our Future,” Chasing Kings are on the cusp of something bigger. A few new tracks worked their way into the set, and if these are any indication of what’s to come on their full length debut, those who’ve had the chance to catch this act at smaller venues will be saying “we knew them when.”

Next up was songstress, Morgan Nagler of celebrated indie quartet, WHISPERTOWN 2000. Accompanied by well known session player, Blake Mills on guitar ad Nick White on keys; Nagler wowed with an intimate set of solo songs about peaches, almonds and the like; each showcasing her rural voice. Closing with a soul wrenching solo version of Gillian Welch’s (Whispertown 2000 were the first signees to Welch’s Acony Records) “Look at Miss Ohio,” it’s easy to see that Nagler’s twang is rootsy indie folk personified. Watching Nagler was like taking a trip back to 2006 when I first caught The Whispertown 2000 (check out Livin’ In a Dream, a must listen); and it’s just as apparent as it was back then, that she is by far one of the emotive singers out there. Nagler excels in the lyrical storytelling department; personable, funny and never failing to create a level of intimacy with the audience that allows you to feel as if you’ve stumbled upon something special.

The evening closed with a group we at FS absolutely adore, All Wrong and the Plans Change. In the wake of 90’s alt resurgence, ala Hole, All Wrong and the Plans Change are a refreshing surprise in the mist of other imitators and most definitely the new faces of girl rock for 2010. Lead by the enigmatic Kassia Conway, with the spectacular Amy Wood on drums, this LA based group has been gaining steam for quite some time and we were fortunate enough to feature them on the Future Sounds 33 Compilation last summer.

Lush vocals, skillful guitar and some seriously amazing drums courtesy of Amy; All Wrong and the Plans Change are even better live. Their raucous, yet ethereal set was populated with personal favs like “Whiskey Birds, “Hey, Hey” and “Lately". All Wrong and the Plans Change’s recently released and sonically stunning, I’m Like Whatever EP is merely just a slice of what this quartet’s performances are like.
“I Get Down” is an infectious piece of alt pop rock genius, so it’s no wonder it caught the attention of uber music supervisor, Alex Pastsavas, meriting a spot on an episode of Gossip Girl last fall. Chrissie Hynde references be damned, Kassia’s voice is a serious force that transcends any Pretender’s comparisons.

If you've had up to your lids with electro-indie/hipster indie and the like, then I suggest you pick up a copy (or download it) of "Magic Windows, Magic Nights" by Brooklyn's THE LIBRARY IS ON FIRE. If everything is in a 20 year cycle, and the '90's are back, look no further than TLIOF to give you that Dinosaur Jr punch in the mouth that's missing from the mix. This album I'm still just catching up to and it will probably take another month to begin to process it, it's that good.

After a little intro, the track "Magic Bumrush Heartz" comes in and makes you remember why Nirvana snapped us out of Debbie Gibson-land at the start of that decade. The band is a trio, another comparison to the previously mentioned gods of grunge, comprised of Steve Five, Pete Sustarsic and Mark Shue. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the beauty of a trio is that there is no where to hide, each player has to bring it or it's obvious. This bunch brings it and couldn't hide if they wanted to, some neighbor would be banging on the wall and calling the cops. The ending to "Cinematic Idea" is so big and furious that you feel like you were paddled so hard you won't be able to go potty for weeks.

They recorded 'Magic Windows, Magic Nights' in 2 weeks with Guided by Voices producer/member, Todd Tobias in Ohio in January on an analog 4-track, and it has that working class, Midwestern feel to it by lacking any attempt to chase the buzz band tail. The album is all smash-mouth football, it has plenty of slow moving, crunching numbers, but even still has endings that turn on you, like on "Smoke & Mirrors". “I Miss You So Much, It Hurts So Bad,” is just fuzzy.

For me, it just feels good to rawk! Bravo to this full-length, all 15 songs worth, because it takes a lot these days to get anyone to give a new band a chance past 1-3 songs, and these guys deliver the payoff throughout.

Tonight @ The Silverlake Lounge it's a 4-band line-up of local talent that has a couple of our favorite bands sharing the 'Salvation' stage > CHASING KINGS and ALL WRONG & THE PLANS CHANGE. The place should be stuffed, as WHISPERTOWN 2000's Morgan Nagler plays a solo show, but they've gotten ink in everyone from Mojo, Q, Spin, NME, Uncut, Paste and Rolling Stone. SF’S THE FEROCIOUS FEW HEADLINING THE RUMBLE TOUR IN MAY IN SUPPORT OF JUICES

The first week of May is upon us and THE RUMBLE is back with week of shows guaranteed to stretch Cinco de Mayo throughout the entire week. As usual the party’s always free!

THE FEROCIOUS FEW will be joining us this month on the entire THE RUMBLE WEST COAST TOUR in support of their staggering debut release Juices (Birdman). The brainchild of SF troubadour Francisco Fernandez and Daniel Aguilar, this blues rock duo are a return to the hallmarks of classic Americana, with visceral, raw lyrics accompanied by frenzied guitars and bashing drums. After a sweltering set in Austin at the Bay Area Takeover Party this March, THE FEROCIOUS FEW have been racking up the accolades, with the New York Times blog labeling the pair as one of their SXSW Standouts.

We’ve been lucky enough to see them live (back in November they tore up the small Blue Palms Stage at the Hollywood Brew Fest), so we can attest that their show is a serious force of zealous energy that is really indescribable. With Blurt Magazine calling Juices “the best debut album of 2010 only 4 months in,” this act is set for big things. The single “Porcelain Doll” is piece of riotous soul rock. While, THE FEROCIOUS FEW are known for their impromptu performances on the street corner of 16th and Mission, but if the buzz radiating off Juices is any indication they will soon be shucking the pavement for larger venues very soon; so the chance to see them in these intimate settings won’t last long.

Starting the week off in Washington on Monday May 3rd, THE RUMBLE SEATTLE kicks off the tour at Havana Social Club. Seattle collective THE HEAD AND THE HEART are set to open the night with their harmony laden indie folk. Call them the American version of Mumford & Sons (a bonafide staple at FS HQ). Their track, “Sounds Like Hallelujah” is an epic beautifully orchestrated ballad, heavy on the violins and Josiah Johnson’s soaring vocals.

Then Tuesday May 4th we’ll head down to our Portland home, Holocene, where two local acts will share the bill with THE FEROCIOUS FEW. First up is 1776, a quartet that look as if they were plucked off the cover of Rolling Stone in the 60’s with perfectly shaggy mops of hair and vintage to match. Recently signed to Beat The World Records (The Dandy Warhols label), 1776 are young (most of them underage) and earnest classic rockers in the vein of MC5.

Portland Mercury darlings, MONARQUES round out the night, as this seven piece are set to bring their sunny, 1950’s inspired indie pop. The creation of Oh Captain, My Captain's Josh Spacek, MONARQUES’ dreamy confections are reminiscent of early Morning Benders with the added bonus of female backing vocals.

Wednesday May 5th, Francisco and co will head down to their home turf for THE RUMBLE SF at Café du Nord for the Juices album release party and probably one of the best Cinco de Mayo celebrations going on in the city that night. Tequila plus Trumer Pils equals the ultimate party.

Joining us for dates in SF and LA, are MISSISSIPPI MAN, a band we’ve loved since they released The Snake Oil Salesman EP last spring. This LA based quintet are making legit folk pop, full of blues infused harmonies with David Knight and Luke Messimer’s vocals recalling an early Neil Young. Touted as one of the Best Bands of 2009 by our friends at The Deli LA, we couldn’t be more excited to have MISSISSIPPI MAN on the bill for these two nights.

Bay Area favorites, THE SERMON will also be on hand for the fiesta. Serious dark dirty garage with blistering guitars and tinges of 60’s soul, plus a healthy dose of The Stooges; it’s no wonder The Owl Mag have been loving THE SERMON. If their live show is anything like we’ve been hearing, their set is bound to be pretty amazing. As always, resident DJ BAGeL Ted will be spinning tunes all night. RSVP at Sonic Living.

Thursday May 6th The RUMBLE LA will head back home to 3 Clubs, where another local act and Aquarium Drunkard fav, DIRT DRESS will open the night. Classic garage rock at it’s best (loud and thunderous); this three piece earned a spot at Waved Out this past March with bloggers saying, “Dirt Dress shows us what punk rock might have been, almost was, and, apparently, still can be.” With buzz like this, you’ll have to come check out DIRT DRESS.

As usual we head down south for THE RUMBLE SAN DIEGO on Saturdays to our North Park dwelling, Bar Pink on May 8th with a killer line up of SD bands joining THE FEROCIOUS FEW. First up is our newest obsession, LITTLE DEADMAN, a local act signed to our friends over at Single Screen Records (Beaters, Heavy Hawaii). LITTLE DEADMAN evoke early Strokes with a hint of Yesayer. Just check out their track “Shooting Seagulls” and you’ll hear why we can’t get enough of them.

THE KABBS are dirty Southern tinged garage rock by way of North Park, with the help of Brian Clinebell’s vocals. A perfect melding of psychedelic and blues influences, “Golden and Blue” is a must listen. It’s no wonder local SD press, like CityBeat are calling their sound, “catchy garage-pop without the lo-fi hipster pretense.” Local DJ Cory Casey will be on the decks all night!

NEW SOUNDS: FOSTER THE PEOPLE "PUMPED UP KICKS"

Better late than never, but new to us is LA's FOSTER THE PEOPLE. For the last few weeks we've been in love with "Pumped Up Kicks", which could be this year's "Young Folks" or jam of the Spring/Summer if it gets out the right way. I'm told the track went #1 on Hype Machine and for good reason - it's a hit (whatever that means these days).

We've got such a crush, we've booked them for June's RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES party at 3 Clubs on June 10th.

It's easy to stumble upon the peppy sonic orgy of The Arcade Fire's (where art thou Neon Bible follow-up?) instrumentals, The Polyphonic Spree's choral grandiosity and Stars' pop breeze once you simply take the Kissaway Trail to the foot of Sleep Mountain.

In support of the Danish sextet's second long player (Bella Union/Etch n Sketch/Playground), Sleep Mountain, released in March, The Kissaway Trail played a fairly under-attended set at LA's Spaceland last night. Hot of the buzz of SXSW (I saw them there also) and their recent stint with Aussie darlings The Temper Trap, the group managed to kick the room into place with a swirly set of numbers from both their albums that were supported alongside keyboard pokes, ganged-out vocal melodies and a night-closing, onstage tambourine jump-along of standout "SDP."

The band has an SF set tomorrow (the 22nd) at Pop Scene before jaunting back to Europe (hopefully the volcano no American can pronounce, Eyjafjallajökull, doesn't present a problem) for a full tour, festival slots and sets alongside the likes of Tokyo Police Club and The Raveonettes. Sleep Mountain is out now. Go on and give standouts "SDP," and "New Year" a listen… your ears will thank you. You can stream the entire album over at Spinner.

THE RUMBLE: NEW YORK KICKS OFF TONIGHT AT THE STUDIO @ WEBSTER HALL

We've been rumblin' around New York City and Brooklyn for almost two years now, and tonight THE RUMBLE: NEW YORK returns to Manhattan and takes it new monthly home at The Studio @ Webster Hall.

If you've been napping, The Rumble is a monthly indie-rock party that focuses on up-and-coming bands and is about highlighting this new talent through our collective partnerships.

This FREE party is brought to you in New York by Future Sounds, Defalco Presents, The Musebox, East Village Radio, Stranded In Stereo and Spin Earth.

We've all combined on putting together an amazing line-up......

HANK & CUPCAKES are a Brooklyn two-piece bringing their drum electro pop to the Studio @ Webster Hall this Wednesday. Their Pleasure Town EP is chock full of gritty dance rock pop tracks like "Aint No Love" a piece of funky, disco rock, with Cupcake's sultry vocals recalling the prowess of Beth Ditto. Set to open for Placebo in June, this duo's high energy combined with Hank's skillful bass are a pretty stunning combo. Recently branded one of the Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2010 by MusicVagabond NYC, HANK & CUPCAKES are not to be missed, with people saying, "Everyone gets that feeling that they are one second from blowing up and when you catch their act you will understand why."

SAADI, a Syrian born singer songwriter with serious skills is part Regina Spektor, part Lykke Li and currently receiving major blog love, even from the likes of Pitchfork. Her a cappella version of Bob Dylan's "Mama, You've Been on My Mind" is a must see! With her Bad City EP dropping last month on Serious Business Records and fresh off a stint at SXSW, SAADI is making serious noise with psychedelic indie dance pop punctured with haunting vocals and keys. A former member of Looker, SAADI is on to something with unusual melodies and arrangements resulting in a jarring combination that we can't wait to see live.

ARMS + LEGS, a five-piece hailing from Connecticut set to stop by the Studio @ Webster Hall before they head to Beijing for The Strawberry Festival. Led by Scott Daly, this NY based group is making big news overseas, after being signed to Modern Sky, the largest record label in China. Ranging from quiet folk rock to the more electro tinged indie pop off their 2009 Nothing Ever Was EP (Closet Trekkie Records), ARMS + LEGS have been percolating on the NY scene for quite some time. "Packing My Wires Away" is a distorted piece of pop perfection in the vein of Home Video.

Having the illustrious honor of being one of tastemaker Marc Jacobs favorite new bands, UNSOLVED MYSTERIES are a Brooklyn duo garnering tons of attention from fashionistas and Williamsburg scenemakers. Fronted by fashion designer, Jon Lynn, UNSOLVED MYSTERIES are fresh off the release of their second album, Tragic Trouble, a mixture of hazy danceable tunes, like "Pen15." Lynn and co have been the recipients of massive press lately, including an endorsement from Nylon and more. Seriously catch UNSOLVED MYSTERIES before they end up being featured in a Juergen Teller shot Marc ad!

If DEAD MEADOW and SLEEPY SUN were to get a little too stoney one night and get it on, the result nine months later might be the Claremont, California based act OJOS ROJOS. We recently received their full-length, "Disappear" (Cobraside) and it's been on steady rotation ever since. It may be turf that has been well-covered by the bands previously mentioned, and early BRMC, The Black Angels and The Warlocks, but personally, I can never get enough of heavy psychedelic rock that has some darkness and danger woven deep within. As their name so appropriately states, this is for those that gift lifted, get red eyes, and put the headphones on to rock out. We're already trying to rope them into an upcoming Rumble LA party, as we must see this one live. DARKER MY LOVE had better watch their backs........

THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO @ Bar Pink has become one of the most eagerly anticipated club nights in SD, bringing together a diverse and art-driven community in North Park each month. Tonight, the April edition of The Rumble happens with some of San Diego's best upstarts as well as our new best friends, PEPPER RABBIT.

Here's who is playing the party...

WRITER is comprised of brothers, Andy and James Ralph. We've had the pleasure of hearing their new EP and the new sound is less pop and more eclectic than their previous release, Blood Drops. We are really diggin it and are look forward to hearing the new songs live.

Traveling through the west coast Rumble Tour is LA's psych-pop act PEPPER RABBIT. We've had the pleasure of seeing them on Rumbles dating back to SXSW recently, and their brand of music - THE SHINS meets LOCAL NATIVES feels right on. You've never seen a few guys do as much at the same time than PR, multi-tasking made to look easy.

Also on the bill are BLACK MAMBA, led by Aimee Sanchez who's timeless voice perfectly lays over airy songs that make you feel warm and fuzzy. Coming off the 2009 Golden Birthday EP (Single Screen Records) released last year, Black Mamba continues to make new music and we hope they have a new release this year.

Lastly, if you aren't hip to the JAMUEL SAXON remix craze, get on it! Given that couple, ï»¿Keith Milgaten and Aimee Sanchez from BLACK MAMBA and the Ralph brothers from WRITER make up this dancey group, it's only fitting to have them collab on the tables for our Rumble night.

JACK LADDER IS A LEGEND

Last night I saw a rock star. Remember them? We used to have them. We still do, they are mostly just old rock stars now.

His name is Tim Rogers, aka JACK LADDER

His performance well after midnight last evening at THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES was in short, epic.

It felt like I had been transported back in time to the mid-'80's and was catching one of my 'time-machine wishes' bands perform early shows in a little club. It didn't feel 2010, but in that I don't mean that it doesn't sound contemporary > it's more about how it didn't feel like what everyone else seems to be doing these days (long, meandering songs, lo-fi, purposely being so deep and obscure, indie folk, electro indie, white belts, dogs chasing the tail). This set of music was more about a band that clearly has a vision and dare I say, personality? And long in personality are the members of Jack Ladder. Frontman/hobgobblin Tim Rogers stands on the tall side of 6"5", maybe even 6'7" and is one tall drink of water. Donny Benet on bass looked like he slipped away on his rumspringa from the Amish farm he was raised on and learned the bass by studying old Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds records. And then there is Kirin J Callinan (see below). On their myspace page he is listed as "guitar, blood", and I'm still trying to process what this guy is all about, and I mean that in the best possible way. Anyone that can rock the pants, or shall I say - green velvet knickers and not miss a beat is someone I can idolize. What Kirin was doing with his TABLE of pedals and even more importantly, with the chords and his dance moves, was stunning. Everything about the set was dangerous, inventive, and really just wild, like a scene out of 'Wild At Heart' and Jack/Tim was Nicholas Cage.

The crew I was standing next to all felt we had just witnessed one of those special performances that you'll someday fondly look back on and be grateful you were present.

Tonight @ 3 Clubs in Hollywood it's another edition of THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES.

This month we have some incredible bands that should already be on your radar.

Headlining from Australia, it's the 6'5" JACK LADDER (aka Tim Rogers) still in country post-SXSW and ready to bring his NICK CAVE fronting SUICIDE sounds to us in the perfect vamp-setting that is the back room of 3 Clubs. Jack Ladder and company have already received a ton of acclaim down south, winning the 2008 AMP Red Bull Prize for Best Album for Love is Gone (Spunk) and opening for Aussie super group Wolfmother.

LA's own PEPPER RABBIT have been playing all of The Rumble West Coast dates and we couldn't be more excited to have this three piece from Silver Lake. Even this morning we've been getting emails from San Francisco Rumblers that caught them last night raving on their performance.

Opening up from Fullerton, CA, it's REGRETS & BRUNETTES, someone we've had our eye on for some time and then Kevin at Buzzbands.la reached out and snagged them for the party.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: YUKON BLONDE @ THE MINT

Our new favorite band from Vancouver, Canada happens to be in town tonight @ The Mint - YUKON BLONDE. If you haven't heard them yet, or their brilliant self-titled record on Nevado Records, then you need to investigate, quickly. From front-to-back, it's one of the most enjoyable listens I've had in some time. You definitely hear the Pacific Northwest influences of say FLEET FOXES, but it also has a real jingle-jangle to it that isn't all folk, a la a band like DR DOG. Immediately tracks like "Loyal Man" and "Babies Don't Like Blue Anymore" jump out at me as favorites, but then, almost like a WILCO record, the other songs start pulling their weight to create a song-by-song bridge through the entire collection of songs.

We like them so much that they've actually just been added to Monday's RUMBLE: SEATTLE @ The Havana Social Club in Capitol Hill. They'll be playing with PEPPER RABBIT and THE GLOBES, making that show the perfect kick-off to anyone's week.

PEPPER RABBIT TO HEADLINE WEST COAST RUMBLE

So we’ve given you two weeks to rest from the hangovers of SXSW, THE RUMBLE is ready to unleash a week of parties up and down the West Coast with line-ups that are sure to represent. As usual the party’s always free!

LA’s own PEPPER RABBIT will be headlining all of The Rumble West Coast dates and we couldn’t be more excited to have this three piece from Silver Lake. Not to be confused with the myriad of other hare themed bands (Frightened Rabbit, White Rabbit), PEPPER RABBIT were on the short list of bands to watch at SXSW and from what we’re hearing they didn’t disappoint.

Led by Xander Singh and Luc Laurent, PEPPER RABBIT are drawing comparisons to early Grizzly Bear with a slow building somber psych-pop heavy on the instrumentals. “None Shall Sleep” is all haunting melodies and aching vocals, while “Red Wine” is slow building groggy gem. With an endorsement from fellow Eastsiders made good, Local Natives, a feature in Under the Radar and the release of two separate EP’s last year, Clicks and Shakes; Pepper Rabbit are a must see before they blow up.

VEIL VEIL VANISH and SILVER SWANS will share the bill; both bring their brand of electro-tinged pop. VEIL VEIL VANISH, a gothy shoegaze outfit is currently riding high on a slew of favorable reviews for their debut, Change in the Neon Light with tinges of The Cure. SILVER SWANS, the side project of FS fav LoveLikeFire vocalist Ann Yu (and Jon Waters) is part LaRoux, part The Knife. Yu’s vocal prowess combined with beats crafted ala Ladytron, result in dreamy dance pop confections. As always, Resident DJ, BAGEL TED will be there spinning throughout the night. On Thursday April 8th we’ll bring it back home to 3 Clubs for THE RUMBLE LA with Pepper Rabbit playing on their home turf. Journeying all the way from Down Under (by way of NY) we have Sydney troubadour JACK LADDER. Jack (aka Tim Rogers), ex-bassist of Expatriate, has already received a ton of acclaim down south, winning the 2008 AMP Red Bull Prize for Best Album for Love is Gone (Spunk) and opening for Aussie super group Wolfmother. Standing at 6’5, tall and broody, JACK LADDER is like a crooner from years past, with vintage inspired sounds incorporating the best of early blues, folk and rock. We can just imagine how Ladder and company will tear up the dimly lit intimate backroom of 3 Clubs.

Also on the bill are Fullerton natives, REGRETS & BRUNETTES; an OC band we’ve been buzzing about for quite some time. Their track “Uh-Oh,” an infectious piece of jangley rock that has been on repeat around FS HQ for the past couple of months. Classic indie rock coupled with sharp writing, this quartet has been drawing favorable attention from local bloggers including The Deli LA and Buzz Bands LA.

We’ll then head further down the coast on Saturday April 10th for THE RUMBLE SAN DIEGO to our North Park home, Bar Pink. We’ve got two SD acts, WRITER and BLACK MAMBA set to pack the tiny walls of Bar Pink. Our love of SD bands really knows no bounds and both of these bands popped up on our radar last September, and needless to say we couldn’t be more amped. WRITER, just back from their SXSW tour with December Rumble vets, Tape Deck Mountain have been mainstays on the scene for a while with their gritty rock sound. Comprised of brothers Andy and Jayme Ralph, WRITER are about to be big. Led by Aimee Sanchez, BLACK MAMBA is the Mazzy Star for 2010 with ethereal, moody piano driven pop. Coming off the 2009 Golden Birthday EP released last year, this group is making lush, airy songs that can’t be missed. JAMUEL SAXON (Jamuel Saxon is made up of Keith Milgaten and Aimee Sanchez (Black Mamba) and Andy and James Ralph (Writer). We just were sent this intimate look at a band we've been enjoying, THE VISION OF A DYING WORLD, where it's stripped down and personal. The band is on a cool indie label from SD - SINGLE SCREEN RECORDS - who seem to have their fingers in the right cake these days (Black Mamba, Beaters, The Paddle Boat).

Headliners SURFER BLOOD are everyone's favorites, but BEST COAST, TURBO FRUITS and DIRT DRESS also step in. The nice part about this line-up are there are new bands NOT from LA also featured, like our friends APES OF WRATH and TAPE DECK MOUNTAIN. Even the ICE CREAM MAN is going to be there. FOR THE RECORD....WOXY

It's obviously been a long, hard week here around the FS headquarters with regards to the events that have transpired around WOXY. We've received some of the most severe hate mail and calls and we realize that everyone is rightfully upset, as are we, and we've spent most of our time this week trying to find a solution that will make this story have a different ending, so apologies for the slow response. This is an attempt to shed some light on things.

When we rewind the clock to over a year ago when Future Sounds purchased WOXY, the station was sitting on the very same doorstep as it's at now, and we took on the challenge of keeping this amazing station running and devised a strategy on how to take something and create a sustainable revenue source around it, so it could remain basically commercial free and free to the world. Future Sounds isn't some giant corporation with an agenda outside of believing in great music and trying to help artists. For almost seven years we've done nothing but find unknown and up-and-coming artists and do our part to promote and share their craft to the world, and the compensation for it has been minimal, but was never the reason behind our motivations. We have been fans of WOXY for years, fans/friends of the staff, and were thrilled the day the 'Future Sounds' radio show first aired on WOXY. When the opportunity to save it from extinction presented itself, we checked our heads and got on board. We then discussed the goals and plans with the WOXY staff and everyone was on board with the direction and the move to Austin.

Perhaps these plans were based too closely on the partnerships we were developing to help take a station full of FREE music and insert ways that it could support itself, the staff, rent and royalties for the songs playing 24-7. Stepping back and realizing that we're in time of banks getting bailed out and labels going under and brands pulling their marketing budgets from the music/entertainment sectors, we for 6-9 months took meetings with everyone that could help make WOXY the biggest online station and develop content that could generate it's own source of income. These meetings and deals were with companies that were massive, with deep pockets, etc, but one after another these huge corporations starting laying off the very people that were writing up our deals. Sometimes, no matter how great you think your business is, or how clever or incredible your offering is, if the people you are doing business with go down, so do your interests. We are all connected in this enormous game of dominoes, and the trickle-down hits even the little guys - WOXY, Future Sounds, etc.

I’d also like to address the timing and the suddenness of the decision to hopefully only temporarily take it off the air. It may seem like it was ‘out of nowhere’ but internally we’ve all known the challenges and necessary deadlines that needed to be met. Even into SXSW week we had two companies that looked completely on board to acquiring the station and keeping it running without a hitch. Each day felt like forever while we awaited the verdict, one that looked like the solution, until one parties’ cold feet surprised us all and forced us to act.

Excuses are excuses, but in the end there are some financial realities to radio that stations like Indie 103 in Los Angeles and countless others are experiencing, and those are stations with advertising running constantly. After numerous deals didn't close we also explored dozens of options for investors/buyers/partners and many times after weeks of due-diligence and term sheets flying, people starting backing out, mostly due to the financial landscape that we are all living in daily. The financial community doesn't want to touch the media/music business with a ten-foot pole these days. We also fought hard with every potential suitor to guard and protect the integrity of what WOXY stands for, to protect the staff, so that someone doesn't just show up and strip it of the parts that make it so great.

So the future of WOXY is unknown, but judging from the massive outpouring of support and interest in the station that has survived for 25 years now and has more lives than a cat, I think that this radio station we all love dearly will deliver quality indie rock music to listeners.

We would like to respond to all those that wrote with such anger that there are humans on the other side that do read this and take it personally, and to acknowledge that we are in the same place of mourning for not just a station that we've loved for years, but for the staff that we consider friends and family that we've traveled with and made plans with. In a time when people don't feel like paying for the artist's albums anymore, and love to stream and download for 'free', there are costs of doing business for everyone to provide such services and music. This came down to a considerable monthly financial position; one that was maintained for over a year, but that eventually needed an infusion that didn't arrive.

Future Sounds’ efforts to work towards keeping the promise of WOXY alive have not ended and I hope this truly is only a temporary goodbye.

Today's line up is about diversity, ranging from Seattle's HEY MARSEILLES to a 12 piece soul band from Milawaukee (KINGS GO FORTH) to the piano driven CHASING KINGS to the perfect party band, CASXIO.
