GOODBYE TO COOLFER - HELLO AGAIN TO BUDDYHEAD

My favorite music industry blog/web site, COOLFER, is no longer my daily source of information. Glenn Peoples, a guy with incredible insight, has moved on to BILLBOARD to become a Senior Editorial Analyst and post things daily on Billboard.biz. Coolfer was always my first stop, before HITS, before THE DAILY SWARM, and PITCHFORK. Always honest, usually first on new technologies as they apply to the music industry, I'll miss Coolfer and vow to leave it on our blog role call list for months to come.

Equally as honest, but in a totally different way, BUDDYHEAD is back! I spent years pissing my pants to some of the dirt dished out on this site for years, before it went on hiatus. Now, Travis and company are back and the re-launched web site looks great. Check it out here > http://www.buddyhead.com/

LINE UP ANNOUNCED FOR APRIL'S THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES

Next Thursday night in Los Angeles, THE RUMBLE: LA returns for the April installment at 3 Clubs with three great bands and our resident DJ's MiCHAEL, fresh from their SXSW trip where they killed it at HOT FREAKS and the PURE VOLUME closing night party. RADEMACHER, a band we've loved since stumbling on them in July of 2005 are finally getting the credit and attention they deserve, and are headlining the party. In from Austin, Texas are THE FRONTIER BROTHERS, a band we're insanely lucky to have scored for the party. If you haven't seen this band, or heard their brilliant release, "Space Punk Starlet", do so. Here's a sample, "Kickstand Woman" (mp3). The third band is a Future Sounds band, SIMON SAYS NO from Oslo, Norway. They'll be coming in on fumes from the Rumble: SF on Wednesday night, watch out for Simon the guitarist, there's something special happening with that guy.

Download "Sleeping Heart" from Simon Says No (mp3)

If you haven't been out to a Rumble party, what's wrong with you? This isn't a hipster night, it's about supporting up and coming bands, surrounded by people that seem like old friends you left behind in your home towns before moving to a town full of VIP lists and fair weather friends. The 3 Clubs is a dirty/dark drinking hole that's absolutely perfect for rock and roll. The tiny backroom where the band's play is intimate and you'll get a closer look at the artists than you probably bargain for.

It's free to get in if you RSVP here > http://sonicliving.com/therumble-LA
It's $5 at the door if you just show up. Thanks to Ivan Minsloff for our poster this month!

THE RUMBLE SAN FRANCISCO ANNOUNCED FOR APRIL

Next Wednesday at Harlot in San Francisco, the Rumble returns with a band in from Norway called SIMON SAYS NO. I caught them at SXSW and if you're fans of bands like FILM SCHOOL, EDITORS or CHAVEZ. Our guest blogger this month is one of my favorite Bay area reads, THE BAY BRIDGED, and they booked LEOPOLD & HIS FICTION, a band we've been playing consistently since discovery on the FS show on WOXY. On the turntables this month with our resident BAGEL TED, will be VIN SOL, so you know there will be dancing.

Jacek scored big and has made $2 Pilsner Urquells or Peroni beers available from 8-9:30pm.

As always, you can get in for free if you RSVP here > http://sonicliving.com/theowlmag/therumble

It's $5 if you don't. Thanks to Julie Suchard for the sweet poster.

SXSW 2009 RECAP

Peelander-Z @ Hot Freaks - Day 2 (Photo by Ryan Suffern)

How can you go to a place where you get a serious sun burn and come home with a cold? It's the non-stop nature of SXSW, the choose your own adventure aspect of it where everyone comes home burnt out with a farmer's tan and a dozen stories.

I was thinking about doing a day-by-day recap but it's now all blurring together like the steady stream of electro-indie bands coming out these days. Instead, here were some of the highlights.

BEST BAND THAT I SAW FOR THE FIRST TIME: SHILPA RAY & HER HAPPY HOOKERS
The lovely Shilpa Ray could be our generation's JANIS JOPLIN. Big words? Perhaps, but that raspy growl, that sweet inspiration, her contagious enthusiasm for music gives her a fighting chance. I compared her to ROSEMARY CLOONEY ("Come On-a My House") but let's be clear that Shilpa Ray is NO retro act. It's relevant, it's dark and dirty, and it's completely refreshing. I know, the photo is horrible, it's me after a couple of Jager shots with my Blackberry camera.

BEST LIVE SET OF MUSIC: THE BROTHERS MOVEMENT@ SOHO LOUNGE
I caught them a couple of times in Austin, but Saturday night's show for the Irish Music showcase was special. From song one the boys punched us in the mouths until the final song, a real mother-fucker of a jam, closed out as loud as THE WHO. Here's what the IRISH TIMES had to say about it.

BEST PARTY: HOT FREAKS
Both days of HOT FREAKS at The Mohawk and Club De Ville were amazing. Think about it, THE DELTA SPIRIT, THE HOLD STEADY, CAMERA OBSCURA, SEBASTIEN GRAINGER, OBITS, THE WRENS, THE ROSEBUDS, PORT O'BRIEN, LEMONADE, SHILPA RAY, GIRLS, HARLEM, JEREMY JAY, and on and on and on, together with Torchie Tacos on the deck and you have some amazing music.

Here's what CHROMEWAVES had to say about it > http://www.chromewaves.net/2009/03/camera-obscura-the-grates-and-peelander-z-and-more-at-sxsw/

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
LOCH LOMOND's heavenly voices at the Brooklyn Vegan party on Wednesday night. FRANCIS & THE LIGHTS turns into PRINCE with a bit of JIM CARREY at the Levi's Fader Fort. THE ETTES drummer is a super star playing the Noise Pop/Take Root Records party, why aren't they a household name yet?? THE TEMPER TRAP displaying "Sweet Disposition" outside near The Continental Club, then stumbling into THE FEROCIOUS FEW playing on the sidewalk around the corner in front of the HOTEL SAN JOSE. EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS going late late night on Saturday at PureVolume.

Again, everyone's personal SXSW is their own adventure, but I'm always surprised people go all the way to Austin to see Metallica, or Echo & The Bunnymen, Kanye West or Ben Harper. Really? Don't they all come to your town over and over again? Haven't you seen them before? The festival was built on the idea of having a place where fans and industry could go to discover new artists, and it really has gotten away from that. Why do some bands get 3 official SXSW showcases, and others don't get in? Play all the parties you like, but allow for the little guy to get their shot more often. Something needs to give. You saw a lot less 'free' this year, as sponsors and everyone gets hit by the economy, but more parties than ever before. The unofficial party circuit keeps expanding so far east now that you are almost in Lubbock. I love SXSW, but by Saturday night when the bridge-and-tunnel crowd comes in and things become Mardi Gras on 6th Street, it's time to get out.

If you can survive HOT FREAKS today, then get back over near the convention center this evening to the PUREVOLUME.COM HOUSE by midnight as FS has gathered some performers together that should provide the high-energy needed to stay up all night. Then from the UK, ENTER SHIKARI will errupt. 2am brings EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS from Los Angeles, a band people all SXSW have been talking about, and then to close out a week's worth of parties at the PV House, DJ KISSY SELL OUT will play until no one can stand anymore.

The PV House is located on 2nd and Trinity - look for a HUGE tent across the street from the convention center.

THE AVI BUFFALO INTERVIEW

If you were one of the early birds to last week's Rumble: LA, then you caught a set by high schoolers from Long Beach that have the interest of a couple of the most well-respected indie labels out there - AVI BUFFALO. The band has the May residency at The Echo, so you'll hear plenty about them in the coming months. Most bands at this age are still cutting teeth, not playing guitar solos the way Avi does.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the make up of your band? Describe the players and what they contribute.

Avi: Sheridan Riley is our drummer, and the two of us have played together for a number of years. Back in middle school, I was in 7th and she was in 6th, we were jammin' hard in the jazz band. When we met up again in high school her freshman year, we started playing again (in the jazz band and outside of school). She has a wonderful sensitivity for color, and she really helps
with making songs come together. The key word is "vibe". Nobody plays like Sheridan.

Arin Fazio was in a band called THE BIG SKY, and we'd played with them a number of times. I knew he was a huge Wilco fan, which I am, and our bassist Andrew Celik had to quit the band to start working on becoming an electrician. I called up Arin, he came over, we played, it sounded good! He's a dear friend of mine, and a solid player.

Rebecca Coleman was the girl I started the band for. She sort of broke my heart the summer after 9th grade, and I began writing/recording songs about it my sophomore year. These were the first songs of Avi Buffalo. The next tune I recorded I had a female vocal part in mind, so I asked my friend Adrianna Whalen. As I remember I flaked out and rescheduled, and Adrianna couldn't make it...then I ended up asking Rebecca, who came over and did such a beautiful
job that I was like "Oh my god! Great job!" When I got asked to play our first show, I asked her to come along, and she did. Ever since, she's been in the band. She's a very gifted musician, and a great person. After the full-electric band got rolling, we ended up together, which was a big deal because I'd liked her for a long time, and because I'd stolen her from her previous boyfriend, Kendall. After that all Long Beach teens hated my guts, but it didn't matter because LA Underground had done a write-up on us and we'd started playing in Los Angeles more. It also gave us more time to focus on music since we didn't have to worry about having friends.

Q: How do you juggle High School and playing in an active band?

Avi: I just barely scrape along. I almost never do my homework. We come home late a lot from gigs, which is rough because Jazz Band is a 0 Period class at 6:30 in the morning. Sheridan and I tend to walk in late and half-asleep. The weekend means a lot to me. My grades are pretty bad right now.

Q: The band is based in Long Beach, CA, what's going on in terms of a "scene" in the LBC? Where do you go to see music?

Avi: Long Beach is weird, but there's more happening now than there was. My goodfriend Maria Garcia just started an all ages venue on 10th and Daisy called "The Bookstore". It's an actual bookstore. It was called "The Bookstore" before it was a venue. There's a radical house show spot
called The Hickey Underworld, on Anaheim and Magnolia. A lot of great bands come through that place.

Q: Avi, you can play the guitar like very few people out there, let alone anyone your age, who were your guitar heroes?

Avi: In middle school I was a huge Hendrix head, and I loved Jimmy Page a bunch too. When I got into Wilco, Jeff Tweedy's guitar playing on 'A Ghost is Born' really got me crazy, and then I discovered Nels Cline, who is one of my hugest influences ever. I got into Jim O'Rourke my sophomore year, and he really blows my mind too. Kevin Litrow and Derek Thomas from 60 Watt Kid have made a mark on my brain with their major-pentatonic spiral riffs. I could go on
for a very long time about guitar heroes, because I'm pretty into guitar.

Q: Future Sounds is all about blowing up bands and artists on their way up, the up-and-comers, who do you admire and think no one knows about that people should know about?

Avi: Elijah Forrest is a wonderful guitar player who lives in Long Beach. His project is called TERRORS, and his songs are really moving. I'd highly recommend checking out some of the tapes he's put out.

Q: This is for each band member: PIck one of your favorite albums of all time, and pick one that is a current favorite.

Avi: All Time: Wilco - A Ghost is Born
Current: Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Scared Famous

Sheridan: All Time: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Current: Chicago Underground Trio - Slon, Deerhoof - The Runners Four

Rebecca: All time: Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Current: Wavvez - Wavvez

Arin: All time: The Band - Music from Big Pink
Current: Grizzly Bear - Veckatemist

Q: What's going on with the band in terms of recordings? What's the next thing we can look for from Avi Buffalo?

Avi: We're almost finished with our first record. It's called "Settled Tigertail" and we recorded it with our dear friend Aaron Embry at his own Hunter's Hollow Recording Studio. Not sure when it's going to be out....but we might throw a little something together to give out before then. We're doing a residency at The Echo in May. It'll be every Tuesday, and they'll be plenty of amazing bands supporting us as well. Everyone should get ready for Long Beach's best, because many of them will be playing with us.

Thanks again to Avi and the band for playing The Rumble: Los Angeles, as Avi showed up under the weather and still threw down.
