THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO LINE UP ANNOUNCED FOR FEBRUARY

February 4th is the first Wednesday of the month, and that means THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO at Harlot. This month we have a lot of special guests such as THE BAY AREA ROLLER DERBY GIRLS who will kick off their season at The Rumble. Equally out of control will be the performance by LA's THE RINGERS, a band that throws furniture out of hotel windows because their M&M's aren't the right colors. The SF Rumble has yet to experience anything like this act. On the flip side of the bill is the SF based MUSIC FOR ANIMALS performing a set of music that has made them a big draw in the Bay for some time now. DJ OMAR of POPSCENE will join BAGEL TED on the turntables.
All for $5, or FREE if you RSVP > http://www.sonicliving.com/theowlmag/rumble

TOMORROW NIGHT IN BOSTON: THE RUMBLE @ GREAT SCOTT

THE RUMBLE continues to roll into other cities, this month we expand to Boston and New York City by teaming up with STRANDED IN STEREO. Tomorrow night in Boston we open things up at GREAT SCOTT with three great up-and-coming bands: SPECTATOR - THIS CAR UP - BLACK DIAMOND BAY.

The guest DJ for the night is Jay from CLICKY CLICKY MUSIC blog

Great Scott is at 1222 Commonwealth Ave, in Allston, MA

Here's the scoop on the bands per SIS:

SPECTATOR (www.myspace.com/spectatormusic)
Like Muse, Spectator sounds like a band that would sound even better live. But
first of all, I'd like to give credit to what was put into their studio work. Their EP
"Your Scars" was recorded with the producers of Coheed & Cambria and
King Crimson, and it sounds good. Really good, actually. Each note played is
indispensible to the song--in between the power strumming and heavy vocals are
riffs that suck you into the song. The album can fill a room. With that idea I'm
anticipating how they would sound live on set--louder, stronger, and more intense.

THIS CAR UP (www.myspace.com/tcarup)
This Car Up's self-released album is this: moody, depressing, poppy, dreamy,
elegant and abrasive. They get comparisons to Death Cab for Cutie and Sonic
Youth, and although their photos may seem like laughing candids, their music
means business. Their lyrics are catchy, but it doesn't take away from the angst
and emotion that is put into them. As to their musical talent, there's no doubt that
their riffs, layers, and harmonies are impressive.

BLACK DIAMOND BAY (www.myspace.com/blackdiamondbay)
It started as a Patrick Krief solo project while he was still in The Dears. Now a
full-fledged band hailing from Montreal, Quebec, Black Diamond Bay are
bringing back guitar rock but with their own unique additions. They combine an
ominous sounding organ with tribal-like toms banging in the background that hits
your body. Or other times, like in the Beatlesque "Blue Mace" they create an
epic blend of haunting strings, melodic bass lines, and wailing guitars so
beautifully that you want it to go on forever. Black Diamond Bay is a diverse
band that can go from a slow-paced emotional plea to a hard rock dance number
instantly. They are a must see live act.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: ROBERT FRANCIS + PETER & THE WOLF + MAGIC BULLETS

An incredible line-up is happening tonight at The Echo that best of all, is FREE! The amazing songwriting of ROBERT FRANCIS will be highlighted, and congrats to him for signing a deal with Atlantic Records recently, as well as former FS favorites MAGIC BULLETS from San Francisco, and the incredible PETER & THE WOLF. I've yet to see ANNI ROSSI live, but I'm told it's something not to miss. I spent quite a bit of time listening to Robert's record, "One By One" over the course of the rainy weekend and it's pacing and quiet magic were a perfect fit.

THE TEMPER TRAP SIGN TO RE-LAUNCHED INFECTIOUS RECORDS

Congratulations go out to Melbourne, Australia's THE TEMPER TRAP, for signing to INFECTIOUS RECORDS, a label once teaming with MUSE, GARBAGE and ASH and has re-opened it's doors. We first added them to FUTURE SOUNDS 26 back in March of 2007, and fell back in love with them after hearing the demos for the new album, and the runaway track "Sweet Disposition" in October.

LILOFEE'S "LOCK & KEY" IS 2009'S "PAPER PLANES" - TGTF

San Francisco's LILOFEE got the compliment of this young year from one of my favorite UK bloggers this morning, THERE GOES THE FEAR, when they called the band's single "Lock & Key" this year's "Paper Planes" - "MIA eat your heart out" in their 'Bands To Watch' column.

HOCKEY PLAYS FOUR NIGHTS IN NYC - START TONIGHT

Nope, it's not 4 nights of The Rangers or The Islanders this week, but it's HOCKEY, the Portland band we've been crazy about and playing on the radio show since last May are starting to get the attention they deserve. The UK recently is slapstick about them, now it's time to net the USA. They have four shows in the NYC area happening, with the first one starting tonight at Union Hall in Brooklyn.

Jan 22 - Santos Party House NY, New York

NEW SOUNDS: THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS - THE ANSWERING MACHINE - THE VOYEURS - OTHERS

I've been in babyland for some time now, but it doesn't mean the flow of music piling into FSHQ has diminished. The one nice thing of holding a baby for hours is that you can listen to a lot on your Ipod. There are so many really excellent releases lining up for 2009 that I've been hearing and it's my first chance to call some of these out.

First up, Portland's THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS. I've tipped them quite a bit on how I think they should be a breakout act of 2009, but that was even before I got the new full length. Where this one ends up being released through is still TBD, but I'm immediately excited about "
Barcelona" - a track we will be debuting on the Future Sounds show on WOXY very soon, as well as my early favorite "Golden and Green". The Pacific Northwest keeps cranking out these important folksie bands - FLEET FOXES, PORT O'BRIEN, LOCH LOMOND, etc. and TB&B are the next important point of light in that sequence. I'm not sure what the album is called yet, but I call it delightful.

This next act, THE ANSWERING MACHINE, are from Manchester, England and their full-length, 'Another City, Another Sorry" on Heist Or Hit Records, is brilliant from start to finish. My first impulse was to jump at the single, "Emergency". It's another song that WOXY listeners will get to first in the US soon enough, but then I spent more time in the nursery with headphones and The Answering Machine. Track "Lightbulbs" is the brightest light and a track that I think has big potential and "Oklahoma" is another instant favorite. When they slow it down for "The Information" is when they set the hook in my jaw and pull hard - I'm done. This record will make an impact in the UK, are we smart enough for it over here?
We recently got sent a full-length by the manager of A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS, not only are they a fantastic, ear-bleeding band, their manager happens to be one of the good guys in this business. His latest project is a band we've started playing on the FS show, SHILPA RAY & HER HAPPY HOOKERS, from Brooklyn, NY. Shilpa Ray was formerly in BEAT THE DEVIL, but now heads up the HH's with something twisted in a David Lynch/TRUE BLOOD kinda way. The track, "Filthy and Free" off their 'A Fish Hook An Open Eye' CD, we haven't stopped playing since it's arrival. Here's another act with a big upside for 2009 that I can't wait to see live. Steve, how can we make that happen???

Jumping back to the West Coast, we have Jax from ROCK INSIDER to thank for turning us on to the LA based group, THE VOYEURS. We debuted their track "Things People Say" on the FS show recently, but then received the full-length called 'Well Known Drag'. Again there is pleasure behind this arrival because it's yet another full record of great songs, not just your standard 2 good songs-10 fluff that seems to drip out of most acts these days. My new favorite here is "Something Sets Me Off", but I have the feeling that each track will have it's day in the sun. Their CD release party is set for January 27th at THE ECHO and it's FREE. They go on stage at 11pm.

Finally, hopefully you'll remember THE BOTTICELLIS from FS32 and the amazing track "The Reviewer". If not, you're missing out on this magical band from San Francisco. Fans of FLEET FOXES and BEACH HOUSE will fall into place with this act, and they're finishing up an EP called 'Sierra Songbook' and I got a sneak peak of the rough mixes. "Betrayed" is my early favorite but each one is warm and comforting. This is yet another band that should grab some serious momentum if it breaks out of the West and gets on more people's radar.

A SAD DAY FOR LOS ANGELES TERRESTRIAL RADIO - INDIE 103.1 FM OFF THE AIR

Dammit, what's wrong with the world? I wish the good guys won more often, instead the Los Angeles market is now stuck with KROT, err KROQ, and KCRW. For those times when I forget my Ipod, and don't have cd's in my car, Indie 103 was the oasis for great music - JONSEY'S JUXEBOX, MY SONIC HEAVEN, PASSPORT APPROVED, some great shows and a general playlist that goes beyond Green Day, Pumpkins, The Offspring and Sublime. The station will still remain online, which is where you want to be for the future anyway, so it may be down, but it's not completely out. Pour out some liquor.....

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: FITZ @ HOTEL CAFE

We're fully convinced that a breakout act in 2009 will be the Los Angeles based singer/performer, FITZ. Tonight at the Hotel Cafe, Fitz and his band will be dropping songs that sound like they should be the soundtrack for THE COMMITMENTS II. Soulful and nostalgic, yet current, it comes down to great songs, and Fitz has them. He goes on at 11pm, see you there.
