HELP! TRAINWRECK RIDERS HIT BY A DRUNK DRIVER IN TEXAS

I just read that the boys in THE TRAINWRECK RIDERS were hit by a drunk driver and thankfully, they are all ok. Their equipment, however, is not. This wreck forced them to cancel the rest of their tour with the BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES, and there has been a PAYPAL account set up for those that feel like contributing to the band to replace the damaged gear so they can get back on the road again.

This is from their Web site:
For those of you who have not heard (or maybe you have, and that's why you're here), we were side-swiped by a drunk driver late Saturday night/Sunday morning (6/24). Our van was flipped and rolled. Luckily (miraculously), the van itself and our equipment took the worst of it. As far as we can tell, we did not sustain any serious injuries - various scrapes and bruises, a broken arm, maybe a rib - sticks and stones stuff mainly. We feel very lucky to have been able to walk away from this sort of accident. The drunk driver was caught a few miles down the road.

We are bummed to announced that we will likely have to cancel the rest of our US Tour with The Black Diamond Heavies. We appreciate the Heavies' understanding and support - their kind wishes, more than appreciated.

We are currently headed home to San Francisco, where we will spend some time to gather ourselves and maybe heal up a bit.

A genuine thank you to all who have taken an interest in our well-being, and rest assured, we will do our best to make it back on the road as soon as possible. If you'd like to make a donation to help out with some of the costs that we're quivering at...

New Yorkers, BOYSKOUT (FS03) play tonight at the Knitting Factory in NYC.

Bay Area people, MISTER LOVELESS is at Blake's in Berkeley tonight. I love this band, they're dark and warped and out Joy Division anyone, including Interpol, because they are genuinely disturbing (think BAUHAUS).

TONIGHT IN LA: THE US AIR GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Tonight is the last stop on the US Air Guitar Tour in Los Angeles at the Key Club. This thing that started in fun, is still fun, but the guitarist rip even harder than ever before. TONIGHT IN LA: XU XU FANG @ THE ECHO

Although I haven't seen them live yet, XU XU FANG is a Los Angeles act that I've been hearing lots about and I've been enjoying their songs online. It's their record release party for 'These Days' and it's worth checking them out. The band is the brainchild of Bobby T, formerly of THE WARLOCKS, and these songs were mixed by Mr. Badass, Mark Needham.

NEW SOUNDS: JUKEBOX THE GHOST - CHESTER FRENCH

I've run across two artists that you will probably be seeing on upcoming FUTURE SOUNDS comps, are JUKEBOX THE GHOST and CHESTER FRENCH.

First up, JUKEBOX THE GHOST
Someone sent me some tracks and I loved them both. This Washington D.C. 3-piece seem to be everywhere after a quick google: CMJ, Underrated, Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, among others. Just listen to 'Hold It In' or my other favorite, "Good Day". Catchy as all hell, they're currently on tour in the UK before heading back for a substantial list of US/east coast and southern dates.

The second artist that I'm way late on but am enjoying for the first time is CHESTER FRENCH. Two guys, Maxwell Drummey and D.A. Wallach, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, that are 21 years old and go to that heavy metal school, Harvard.
Looks like they've gotten recent love from Prez Hilton yesterday, Entertainment Weekly, Stereogum, and "She Loves Everybody" was the ending song in last week's episode of Entourage. I've been enjoying the track, "The Jimmy Choo's", I just don't want my lady to fall for it, it could cost me. Thanks Dave.

BITS & BOBS

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: OVERVIEW @ SAFARI SAM'S

FUTURE SOUNDS 27 artist, OVERVIEW ("Melancholy In The City") play tonight in Los Angeles at an all ages show at Safari Sam's. The San Francisco act is coming off playing Live 105's BFD Festival, where they won the best local act contest.

New York Future Sounders, the absolutely luscious sounds of JENNA NICHOLLS (FS22 - "All The While") can be heard TONIGHT @ KNITTING FACTORY NYC 7PM!!!

THE VERVE are getting back together for dates in the UK in November. I liked Richard Ashcroft's first solo CD, and the next few had their moments, but nothing flew to the heavens like The Verve when they were on. Rumor has it they are writing songs together "for the fun of it".

LEMON SUN
live footage from their San Francisco show at the Independent is up on their Stickam.com site> http://www.stickam.com/profile/lemonsun

Can you believe that PAUL MCCARTNEY is performing at Amoeba Records in LA tonight at 7:30PM? A Beatle getting personal and stumping for sales? Wild times indeed. Getting in there will be as easy as getting into one of the PRINCE gigs at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Remember back on FS27, I tipped the New Zealand act, CUT OFF YOUR HANDS? Well, they just did an EP deal with, of all places, Levi's Jeans for Australia and New Zealand only to their new label called LEVITY. Levi's paid for the recording, the band gets to keep its masters, get free merchandise, and they sprung for producer and former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. Sound strange? Not really, with the state of affairs with labels these days, why shouldn't artists and their teams look for new ways to get their music out and paid for. This trend will continue to land more and more artists this year that are looking for creative ways to get the job done.

THE DYKEENIES (FS24) new album ‘Clean Up Your Eyes!’ is due out July 9th on Lavolta Records.

Hey, this new GOLDEN SMOG record, 'Blood On The Slacks', sounds really good!

FS25 artists, LOW FLYING OWLS, grounded at the end of last year, however members of the psychedelic act have returned in true phoenix fashion and have become the LA act, STRANGER'S SMILE. Visit their Myspace page for some of the new demos.

I'm really late to the game on this band, but I recently came across the band, SOUNDPOOL, the shoegazin' outfit from Manhattan. They play tomorrow night in Brooklyn (see flyer above) at Studio B. Damn, I love that flyer, a nice twist on the VU/Warhol classic. Did you ever see the TankFarm Aid t-shirt design TankFarm did for LEMON SUN?

NEW SOUNDS: PIN ME DOWN

Another CD that really grabbed my attention from the stack on my desk is from New York's PIN ME DOWN. As soon as I heard the first guitar charge I had to google it and sure enough, my answer came screaming at me > this band has the guitarist from BLOC PARTY in it (Russell Lissack).

What I love about it is that it has the action and driving energy that the first Bloc Party had to it, instead of whatever that their latest release is trying to be. Singer Milena has a voice made for pop, and these songs have big crossover potential and could do very well at radio. I'm sure that as soon as BP gets off the road, you'll be hearing a lot more about this band.

TONIGHT IN LA: 2 GREAT SHOWS

THE NATIONAL @ THE EL REY THEATRE

The big show tonight is at The El Rey: THE NATIONAL and THE BROKEN WEST. After going on tour with The National in the UK on the Alligator tour, I know just how amazing they are night in and night out, and seeing the songs from Boxer live is very tempting. Los Angeles' The Broken West also share the bill, prepping us for their forthcoming Merge Records release.

THE AUDRYE SESSIONS @ THE ECHO
Not to give anything away, but there will be a song from THE AUDRYE SESSIONS on FUTURE SOUNDS 29. I was handed their newly finished full length and was blown away. Someone actually turned in a complete record of songs, not a single here and there. This CD has broad shoulders and should finally land this band a home. It won't even take an A&R genius to figure it out, it's simply that obvious.

FUTURE SOUNDS 28 IS OUT!!!

Subscribers, check your mailboxes in a few days.......

MAGIC BULLETS – HEATSTROKE
The sound that comes from San Francisco’s MAGIC BULLETS does a number on me. Vocalist Philip Benson sets the stage with his lush delivery, and any band who’s references are THE SOUND, ORANGE JUICE & THE FEELIES, have me at hello. In May they were Spin’s Artist of the day and they’ve played shows recently with THE COLD WAR KIDS, VOXTROT, FRENCH KICKS and THE WALKMEN. Management: Rob Wells. Legal: Pamela Klein & Chris Castle. Needs: Booking.
MAGIC BULLETS – A CHILD BUT IN LIFE YET A DOCTOR IN LOVE – WORDS ON MUSIC

WHITE RABBITS – THE PLOT
Sounding like the indie rock version of FRANKIE VALLI & THE FOUR SEASONS on this track, this band's rise should happen pretty quickly, and I'm sure they'll be on everyone's "Best Of" lists. A six-piece from New York, they blend indie into ska into piano tracks. Released on May 22nd on Say Hey Records, this is one you should go out and buy today, or download, or whatever you do with music these days.
Management: Aaron Romanello Booking: Paul Buck, Bigshot Touring.
WHITE RABBITSFort Nightly – SAY HEY RECORDS

VIVEK SHRAYA – FEVERED
Toronto’s VIVEK SHRAYA blends his big poppy voice with T REX styled guitar licks, which made him pop out at me. Sometimes sounding like ‘I Turn My Camera On’ era SPOON, Vivek has serious crossover potential, that’s if we can get him heard. He’s hit the US on tour with TEGAN AND SARA, and has really put in his road time in Canada. Needs: Management, booking, legal.
VIVEK SHRAYA – IF WE’RE NOT TALKING – UNSIGNED

SNOWMAN – YOU ARE A CASINO
Hailing from Perth, Australia (home of Luc Longley), it’s SNOWMAN. A four-piece that are part surf rock/Pulp Fiction, part over the top SCISSOR SISTERS like frenzy. Down under they won ‘Best Rock Act’ in the WAMI Awards, and this track won for ‘Best Song’. Recently on tour with WOLF & CUB, we need to collectively rally together and bring this snowball to America. Manager: Heath Bradby. Booking: Adam Yee (Aus) Publishing: Chrysalis Music, Mushroom Music (Aus). Needs: US booking, US label.
SNOWMAN - SNOWMAN - DOT DASH/ REMOTE CONTROL (Australia)

DIRTY LITTLE SECRET – FEELING BURNED
Frontman Louis Castle is truly unforgettable. We seem to be missing those FRANK BLACK’s these days? The J MASCIS? Those characters, the freaks? DIRTY LITTLE SECRET has all that, and I mean that in the best possible way. An Los Angeles band that is no stranger to FUTURE SOUNDS, “Feeling Burned” comes from their brand new batch of demos that show the bands evolution and maturity. Legal: Lisa Socransky Needs: Management, booking.
DIRTY LITTLE SECRET – DEMOS - UNSIGNED

JAMIE T – SALVADOR
Already a hit in the UK, JAMIE T is what would happen if Mike Skinner of THE STREETS were mixed with a ska version of THE KOOKS. Jamie T is only 22 years old, and comes from Wimbledon (London), and won the ‘Best Solo Artist’ award at the Shockwave NME Awards. The US is still waiting for his arrival, and it should be soon. He’s been Zane Lowe’s “Hottest Record in the World” and should make waves everywhere this year. Track "If You Got The Money" should also be a runaway hit.
Management: September Management Publishing: Sony BMG
JAMIE T – PANIC PREVENTION – CAROLINE RECORDS/VIRGIN UK

DUNE – NO SPEED
High school kids from Skive, Denmark, Dúné is a band everyone wants to sign, but can’t. They refuse to do anything until they hit college, except play shows in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany. They were just over in LA for MUSEXPO, where they made some real noise.
Manager: Manfred Zähringer Booking: Crative Talent (Ger) Agency Group Legal: Gary Mandel Publishing: EMI/Iceberg Needs: US Booking.
DUNE – WE ARE IN THERE YOU ARE OUT HERE - ICEBERG RECORDS (Denmark)

UNTIL JUNE – SLEEPLESS
I’ll be completely honest with you, this song is my guilty pleasure. I play it and play it and play it. No snobbery here, this band is the new REO SPEEDWAGON, and I mean that in the absolute best way. This thing is so hooky I can’t imagine it won’t make waves at radio and on TV shows everywhere. From Hollywood, via Phoenix, Arizona, it’s UNTIL JUNE.
Management: Jody Nachtigal. Booking: Val Wolfe. Legal: Mark Maxwell.
UNTIL JUNE – UNTIL JUNE – FLICKER RECORDS

EXPATRIATE – CRAZY
This isn’t a cover of GNARLS BARKLEY, or PATSY CLINE, if anything it’s closer to HEART’s “Crazy on You’ than anything. Out of Sydney, Australia come EXPATRIATE, fronted and masterminded by singer Ben King. The band’s first EP was on heavy rotation on Triple J radio in Australia, and they’ve just finished working with producer John Goodmanson in Seattle on this Australian release dropping this month. Down under they’ve toured with the likes of The Grates, The Presets, Wolfmother and Simple Minds, and just played SXSW in Austin. Manager: Liz O’Grady. Booking: Evan Davis, Harbour Agency. Publishing: Control. Needs: US booking.
EXPATRIATE – IN THE MIDST OF THIS – DEW PROCESS (Australia)

SEA WOLF – YOU’RE A WOLF
I pulled this gem of a song off the ‘Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low EP’ that is out now that sets up the full length scheduled for a September release. Named after the Jack London book, singer Alex Brown Church’s (IRVING) lyrics and romantic musical notions respectfully reflect the namesake. Blowing up on the West Coast already, SEA WOLF is scheduled for North By Northwest in June. Heard it banging on Indie 103.1 in LA today.
Management: Tim Husom. Booking: Tom Windish, The Windish Agency.
SEA WOLF – GET TO THE RIVER BEFORE IT RUNS TOO LOW – DANGERBIRD RECORDS

THE FRAIL – COUNT ON THIS
The Bay Area’s THE FRAIL are the perfect fix for anyone waiting for the next POSTAL SERVICE record, and oddly enough, this reference is actually fitting, as they met online, exchanging songs over the internet to create the original demos, like said Postal Service. The Count On This EP, is full of big electronic beats mixed with indie rock sensibilities, tipping their caps to HOT CHIP at times, then to DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE at others.
Manager: Julie Schuchard. Needs: Booking, legal.
THE FRAIL – COUNT ON THIS EPTRICYCLE RECORDS

VENUS INFERS – SAKE IN OSAKA
From Huntington Beach, CA, surprisingly enough, it’s VENUS INFERS. Although they link their sound and name back to VU, they are clearly swept up in the present sound of such bands as AUTOLUX and MONSTERS ARE WAITING. Fronted by the frisky Trisha Smith, this four-piece is quickly making it’s name in southern California clubs and jumping on the industry’s radar. Needs: Management, booking, legal.
VENUS INFERS – BUT YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT – UNSIGNED

THE MIDNIGHT HOURS – LAY IT DOWN
New York’s THE MIDNIGHT HOURS hail originally from Houston, Texas, and share members with super hip VAMPIRE WEEKEND. They just need some mixing and mastering and their full length (‘Graceless’) is ready for daylight in July. A Northern BLACK KEYS meets THE WHITE STRIPES vibe, but with that dirty late night voice designed for after hours trouble.
Needs: Management, booking, legal.
THE MIDNIGHT HOURS – DEMOS - UNSIGNED

THE MINT CHICKS – CRAZY? YES! DUMB? NO!
Auckland, New Zealand’s THE MINT CHICKS were another band that tore up MUSEXPO in May. To me, this song actually sounds like it could’ve been an old MOTOWN classic, sung by THE FOUR TOPS, with it’s romantic sentimentality, just done in the quirky Kiwi fashion of 2007. At home they’ve supported THE WHITE STRIPES, TV ON THE RADIO and THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS, and have even released work on the genius FIERCE PANDA RECORDS in the UK. NEEDS: Management, booking, legal.
THE MINT CHICKS - CRAZY? YES! DUMB? NO! - FLYING NUN RECORDS

THE WHIGS – WRITTEN INVITATION
From Athens, Georgia, THE WHIGS should be a band that you’ve heard about, but one things for sure, after this year, you will have heard about them. ROLLING STONE called them the best unsigned band in America, until they signed with ATO Records, and now will grace the stage at BONNAROO and the Athens Music Festival in late June. Management: Josh Rifkind. Booking: Buster Philips C.A.A. Legal: David Prasse.
THE WHIGS – GIVE ‘EM ALL A BIG FAT LIP EP – ATO RECORDS

OTHER BANDS TO WATCH:

FIGHT LIKE APES
TRACK: Lend Me Your Face
I'm sort of a sucker of anything that has to do with apes or monkeys - LANCE LINK, APES & ANDROIDS, PART CHIMP, you get the idea. So I was tipped off about this band from Dublin, Ireland called FIGHT LIKE APES, I was instantly intrigued. What came next was streaming "Lend Me Your Face" off their Myspace page and digging in deeper and deeper. Singer May K commands our attention and the lyrics are some of the funniest I've heard in some time. Label interest is building on this act.

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW
TRACK: When The Sun Grows On Your Tongue
A trusted source tipped me off to a band that has me intrigued, to say the very least. This band sounds as if AIR were living in rural Western Pennsylvania and dropping psychedelic slabs of sound on us like they did with Moon Safari. With track names like "Melt Me" and "When The Sun Grows On Your Tongue", what's not to like? Trust me, experience the BMSR with some headphones on and some spirits running in your system.

THE CUBICAL
TRACK: Edward The Confessor
Sounding like the original hound dog himself, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, Liverpool, England's THE CUBICAL has that dirty swamp sound that overtakes you. I mean, where the hell did this come from??? Signed to the Record Collection, they're set to drop their record sometime this summer/fall in the US. Bluesy, nasty, tribal, and completely refreshing. TOM WAITS better look over his shoulder.

THE HENRY CLAY PEOPLE
TRACK: Elly Vs The Eczema Princess
Since this CD landed in my mailbox, Blacklist The Kid With The Red Moustache , it has owned me. It reminds me of the cleverness of bands like PAVEMENT or ILLINOIS, and the fun of say a MODEST MOUSE. The band is from Los Angeles, and at the moment are unsigned.

DOG DAY
TRACK: Oh Dead Life
I received this CD, ‘Night Group’ and have had it in heavy rotation ever since. This is perfect indie rock, and this Halifax, Canada should have a big year in the US, with summer tour plans and their June release on Tomlab. For fans of VOXTROT, THE SHINS, and THE SPINTO BAND.

LAND OF TALK
TRACK: All My Friends
I really don't know how this one slipped by me, but I've recently come across the Montreal band - LAND OF TALK. Their record " Applause Cheer Boo Hiss" came out almost a year ago on Dependent Records, it's a little gem of a 7 song full length. I can't wait to pounce on this three piece's next release that should be gearing up soon. Better late than never.

THE STEEPLES
TRACK: Loosy Lucy
Ormskirk, England’s THE STEEPLES are a young UK band, sounding a bit like THE KOOKS with the madness of THE HOUSEMARTINS or THE FRATELLIS. It’s non-stop fun from the minute you hear that big guitar hook of ‘Loosy Lucy’ – one of my favorite new songs in some time.

BODIES OF WATER
TRACK: These Are The Eyes
These Are The Eyes’ blasts out of your speakers like the ARCADE FIRE evangelizing their love life. A four-piece from Los Angeles, who’s recent ECHO residency has started a lot of chatter about them. Get over to Myspace and check them out, lots of potential here.

HEAD LIKE A KITE
ALBUM: There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere
The second release by Seattle’s Dave Einmo, aka HEAD LIKE A KITE, continues to build on the “no rules” ethics of 2006’s ‘Random Portraits From the Home Movie’, but then lifts off into this dancey, bleepy, party. Produced by Brian Deck (MODEST MOUSE, SECRET MACHINES), this record is for anyone that craves music that pushes boundaries.

PULL TIGER TAIL
Track: Animator
The London three-piece, PULL TIGER TAIL, actually formed while driving across the USA in 2005 on a road trip. Now signed to B-Unique Records, they’re on all the UK playlists that matter and are eyeballin’ a return to the place that launched them. The band are a part of the “new rave” scene, being former housemates with THE KLAXONS.

ALSO BUZZING:
Juiceboxxx, The Pricks, Digitalism, The Black Summer Crush, Tiger Lou, OK Tokyo, Bullet Head, Jenny Owens Young, Marnie Stern, Last Gang, A Fine Frenzy, The Minutes, Vampire Weekend, Oppenheimer, Dark Room Notes, Shadow Parade, Canon, The Autumns, Havana Guns, The Takeover UK, Jack Peñate, Codebreaker, White Denim, The Jaguar Club, Yacht, Red Monroe, Policy, Kickball, The Alones, Tiny Dancers, Los Campesinos, Blood Red Shoes, Xu Xu Fang, Four Day Hombre, The Explorers Club, Bolt Action Five, Sky Parade, Tim Ten Yen, In Waves, Wendy Darling.

TONIGHT: THE PRICKS @ THE ROXY

In what will surely be an industry weasel fest, THE PRICKS play tonight at THE ROXY in Los Angeles. Rumor has it they've sat with plenty of label presidents in the past few weeks and the heavies should be out in force this evening. Why? For a band that has only played 15 shows. Well, two of those shows have been in LA, and both were sell outs at The Roxy, and kids are tattooing their logo on their necks.

Tonight @ The Roxy - 11PM
Good luck on the ticket front, this will sell out.

DUST & BLOOD DOUBLE DIP TONIGHT & SATURDAY

The Bloodline continues, as DUST & BLOOD play two more shows this weekend in Phoenix:

TONIGHT @ The Last Exit (Tempe)
SATURDAY @ One Place (Phoenix)

TONIGHT IN NYC: APTEKA + THE JEALOUS GIRLFRIENDS

At PIANOS tonight in NYC, two former FUTURE SOUNDS acts play together:

THE JEALOUS GIRLFRIENDS (FS24)
and just added and in from Chicago,
APTEKA (FS27)

It should be a night of sonic washes and shoegazin' loveliness.

THE POLICE STILL GOT IT

In a freakish moment of good fortune, I got a last minute call to go to see THE POLICE last night at the Staples Center. Even cooler was I had JOE WALSH's seats. Being that the tickets were ridiculously priced and sold out quickly, I had resigned myself to what I saw at the Grammy's of them and the pictures from Bonarroo as my fix of these three for this reunion tour. Truth is, in 9th grade, my mom didn't let me go to the Syncronicity Tour, and I was absolutely devastated. As a freshman, that album was like magic back in '83 to me, the songs of obsession and frustration were perfect for my high school crushes that went nowhere. So I never got to see them together live, and seeing Sting do his solo stuff doesn't exactly count. Sting still can yelp with the best of them, but like he said during one of the first songs of the night, it "the Stuart Copeland Show". That guy is a freak of nature, in the best possible way. Towards the end of the set they did seem a bit tired, not disinterested, but tired. I realized I was too, and that if it's been 24 years since they've played together, that I'm getting kinda old. I looked around me though, and I was still the youngest by a good bit in every direction.

Set List:
Message in a Bottle
Synchronicity II
Walking On the Moon
Voices Inside My Head
When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around
Don't Stand So Close To Me
Driven To Tears
The Bed's Too Big Without You
Truth Hits Everybody
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Wrapped Around Your Finger
De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
Invisible Sun
Walking in Your Footsteps
Can't Stand Losing You
Roaxanne
First encore:
King of Pain
So Lonely
Second encore:
Every Breath You Take
Third encore:
Next to You

THE WOMBATS (FS27) will release “Kill The Director” on June 25th on 14th Floor Records in the UK, and on the Kids In America label stateside. They will also be playing two days at GLASTONBURY this weekend.

Here’s what’s happened to The Wombats at radio in England:

SONICFLYER (FS27) were just on Steve Lamacq’s radio show on the BBC as well as got the "The best new band we've found on MySpace" pick in the NME in their Under The Radar section. Damn, you guys just stealing straight from my comp each month or what?

KUDU
’s frontwoman, Sylvia Gordon, just sang on a couple of tracks on the forthcoming MOBY record. KUDU has recently passed me new demos that are club-thumpers. Check out some of the insane Kudu-spin offs like BETTY BLACK or P.O.P. (Purveyors Of Perversion). The sickest drummer on the planet, Deantoni Parks of KUDU, also plays drums in MARS VOLTA, and was just in LA in studio with MV hammering out new tracks for their next joint.
KUDU will be throwing down as a unit again on Sunday June 24th in Brooklyn with SPANKROCK and YO MAJESTY -here's the flyer.
FORMER FUTURE SOUNDS ACTS THAT RELEASED ALBUMS THIS WEEK:
ART BRUT – It’s A Bit Complicated (Downtown)

DIGITALISM – Idealism (Astralwerks)

CALVIN HARRIS - THE GIRLS

It's already gone Top 10 in the UK, but hasn't touched down in the States as of yet, except for in dance clubs, but the track 'The Girls' by CALVIN HARRIS is a summertime hit if I've ever heard one. The full length, called 'I Created Disco', is out on Columbia Records in the UK, will drop on Almost Gold Recordings in the US. Calvin's from Dumfrees, Scotland, and this jam is a guaranteed body mover. I dropped it this past weekend and was stormed by 'who's this???'.

BITS & BOBS

A band you should be hearing about soon enough, OK TOKYO, have been asked to play Glastonbury this weekend! OK TOKYO are yet another band to emerge from the bulging Reading (UK) scene - some up there are calling it the new Seattle.

SMALLWHITELIGHT - tipped in FS27, will also be playing the Chill Out Tent at Glastonbury. NEW CASSETTES (FS27) play the BBC introducing stage on Saturday.

Very dear friends of mine, THE POSIESKen Stringfellow has started a new band called THE DISCIPLINES and on June 27 are opening for Snow Patrol at the 02 Arena. That isn't to say the Posies are done, they actually never stop playing in one formation or the other (Posies> REM > Big Star > Oranger> Solo), Jon & Ken *will* be playing together at the Down on the Farm Festival in Norway in August.

DUST & BLOOD
are tearing up Phoenix, Arizona right now, getting weekly spins at THE EDGE and playing shows all over Arizona. Playing “Sing To Your Demons” from Future Sounds 25. Watch this space, things happen daily with this band.

THE COCO B’S (FS26) got hit up in NME this week– “Best Demo We’ve Been Sent This Week”.

THE FIERY FURNACES (FS09) sign to Thrill Jockey.

A great local band signed to a great local label > DIVISION DAY signed to EENIE MEENIE RECORDS. Reiko and the EM team are on fire, and were the smart ones that got what a fun band SCISSORS FOR LEFTY truly are.
DD has a show this week: Friday June 22 - The Switch & Division Day @ Safari Sam’s

In one of the coolest promo ideas in some time, leave it to THE WHITE STRIPES to do something creative that makes it fun to be a fan.
They are scheduled to do a free show on Wednesday at the former site of Tower Sunset on Sunset Avenue in Los Angeles. A mock store called Icky Thump Records has been created for the occasion. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show will be made available to the first 200 people who buy the Icky Thump album at the Icky Thump store after midnight on Monday. Damn, I wanna go to the Icky Thump Record Store, makes me feel like a kid going to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Sadly, PUNK PLANET will no longer exist as a magazine. Citing distribution and financial woes, this great piece of music culture passes on. Nuff' respect due.

For all my Bay Area friends, Elise from Soma FM is putting together some really cool free panels and discussion groups for artists coming up – here’s the first one:

Thursday June 28th
7:15 - 8:15pm
Innovation Salon II : Guitar Heroes- How are Bay Area Companies Coming to the Rescue of the Music Industry?
Panel at the Apple Store
One Stockton Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
Open to the public

Elise Nordling, DJ & Techie Music Guru, Soma FM
Steve Bronstein , Chief Operating Officer, IODA
Jessica Stoner Steel , Vice President of Business Development, Pandora
Dusty DiMercurio, Marketing Manager, Digidesign
Gabriel Benveniste, Founder and CEO, Sonic Living
Moderator: Lydia Popovich, General Manager, Quannum Records
Mixed sounds by DJ Gadget afterwards!

NEW SOUNDS: THE PRICKS

Generally I'm more of a rock guy, but I can recognize something with a pulse when I stumble across it from time to time. There is a white rap rock group (don't be scared) out in the Orange County, called THE PRICKS, that are about to make a huge impact. They have a real urgency, something to say, and this ain't about 'bitches and ho's and bling' and it definitely isn't Linkin Park. The Pricks perfectly reflect where they live, how they live, and capture their own lifestyle as well as SUBLIME did in their day. They accurately represent a segment of Southern California the way the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS do. The amazing thing is that after only 15 total shows, they already have sold out THE ROXY in LA (it was only the second time they had played out of the OC). Anytime you can look around a crowd and see over 65% of the crowd wearing the same hat (the Pittsburg Pirates "P" cap), you know they have connected with fans on a genuine level.
They have another show coming up on June 21st at the Roxy, and if things go as they have, this one will be sold out by next week. KROQ has played their track "Lower Class" and I'm told some majors are offering paper as we speak.

OWL MAGAZINE POSTS EMAP PHOTOS FROM BFD

THE OWL MAGAZINE posted some great shots of EVERY MOVE A PICTURE at Live 105's BFD at Shoreline Amphitheatre last weekend.. EMAP debuted two new songs from the new batch of songs they are working on to the quickly-getting-sunburnt crowd on Saturday.
New track, "Talk To Me" really shows off Brent Messenger's voice. To view the pictures, go HERE.

Caught THE AUDREY SESSIONS live finally - wow! Huge voice!

HONEYCUT
also threw down a very funky set (great cover of "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life")

Of course I loved getting "All mixed up in the wash" of THE COLD WAR KIDS, and that singer of C.S.S. is just simply adorable. SILVERSUN PICKUPS and SCISSORS FOR LEFTY also were highlights.

FILM SCHOOL IN PITCHFORK!

MBV, Snow Patrol Members on New Film School LP
It's, uh, an examination of the dual nature of modern manhood... kind of like Norbit

Film School: it's not just for drunkards and washed-up creative writing majors anymore! Shoegazy Californians Film School-- whom you might recall from such past cinematic achievements as their self-titled full-length debut, or that time they were ripped off in a "ridiculous manner"-- are ready to pull back the curtain on their third feature. Hideout is due out on Beggars Banquet September 11.

Sure to be a richer, more mature departure from their early, Truffaut-biting semi-autobiographical work, the record does nod a bit too reverently at Altman with its numerous cameos-- including My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm O'Ciosoig, Snow Patrol bassist Paul Wilson, and mixmaster Phil Ek on the boards. Ultimately, Hideout's inspired use of mise en scéne and creative lighting techniques help separate it from the pack of turgid Evil Dead knockoffs and wispy character pieces.

The Film School kids aren't quite ready to hit the festival circuit with Hideout just yet, but we're told it'll be in the works around the final cut is complete.

Hideout:

01 Dear Me
02 Lectric
03 Meanmedian Mode
04 Sick Hipster Nursed by Suicide Girl
05 Must Try Easier
06 Two Kinds
07 Capitalized I
08 Go Down Together
09 Compare
10 Florida
11 Blizzard Scout
12 Plots and Plans
13 What I Meant to Say

TONIGHT: BLACK SUMMER CRUSH @ VIPER ROOM

Huntington Beach, California’s THE BLACK SUMMER CRUSH handed me one of the most ripping guitar albums I’ve heard in some time. Track "I Want More" borrows THE STONES’ ‘19th Nervous Breakdown’ a bit, but you know what they say about what a ‘genius’ does? The full length is set to drop at the end of the year, and the touring van will also be getting mileage then as well throughout the US. I haven't seen them live yet, but they play TONIGHT at The Viper Room and I'm going to be there to see this guitarist and his crew.

Line Up:

NEW SOUNDS: RED MONROE

I recently received a CD from the Dallas, Texas band, RED MONROE. Their self-titled full length is really strong and worth investigating. "A Return To The Old Way Of Thinking" has a ARCADE FIRE meets MODEST MOUSE vibe to it, where my favorite, "Carolina Cigarette" just rocks. I haven't seen them live, but I'm intrigued.

THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION TONIGHT @ SPACELAND

My favorite band from Wellington, New Zealand, THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION hit LA the next two nights. If you haven't picked up a copy of the wonderfully mellow and perfect record they just dropped last week, 'Horsepower', then you're missing out. I sometimes just put this record on repeat for an entire afternoon, it's like soothing running water. Check out "Sister Risk" or "Gone Fishing" on their Myspace page > http://www.myspace.com/thephoenixfoundationnz

I feel about this band like I do THE SEA AND CAKE - the kinda band that doesn't have to jerk around to be cool, they just deliver lush sounding music that's fully developed.

So LA heads, get out tonight or tomorrow night to the east side and see this band before they head east for dates with THE VEILS.

THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION TOUR DATES
Mon June 4: Los Angeles, CA – Spaceland
Tue June 5: Los Angeles, CA – The Echo
Weds June 6: Santa Barbara, CA – Velvet Jones
Thurs June 7: New York – The Veils @ Mercury Lounge
Fri June 8: NY – The Veils @ Union Hall
Sat June 9: Boston – The Veils @ Great Scott

WHITE RABBITS - FORT NIGHTLY

Damn, if I didn't get around to this band too late! WHITE RABBITS have been blowing me away, and I should've added them to the June edition of FUTURE SOUNDS 28 that should be ready by the 15th. Their track, "The Plot", owns me. It sounds like FRANKIE VALLI & THE FOUR SEASONS if they were alive today and an indie rock band. This band's rise should happen pretty quickly, and I'm sure they'll be on everyone's "Best Of" lists. From New York, NY, and a six-piece, they blend indie into ska into piano tracks. Released on May 22nd on Say Hey Records, this is one you should go out and buy today, or download, or whatever you do with music these days.

They are currently out on tour - here's their routing:
